Here on the Large Marge Sent Us podcast, Sweety and Sweetie are our names and nostalgia is our game! Once a week (or more if you're lucky!) we watch movies from the 80s and 90s that shaped our childhoods and then have a sisterly chat about them. We usually sing songs and there's about a 100% chance we'll crack up with bouts of laughter. We hope you will too! • Episode 124: Rookie of the Year

    24/05/2018 Duration: 01h46s

Sweetie's second pick for her birthday week is Rookie of the Year, her favorite baseball movie from the 90s with her number one crush in it .... that guy who she doesn't know his name. But man is he cute! Released in 1993, Rookie of the Year follows a year in the life of Henry Rowengartner, a 12 year old who is pretty horrible at baseball, despite giving it all he's got. He has a horrible fall one day, breaks his arm, and when it heals back up a couple weeks later, the ligaments have melded to the bone giving him a literal rocket arm, which he finds out he has when he attends a Cub game and throws a home run ball back to home plate all the way from the bleachers! Despite being 12, Henry gets recruited to play for the Cubs and becomes an all star pitcher - taking them all the way to the Division playoffs! This movie is super cute and despite some real cheesy comedy, Sweetie still cried buckets at the end, so guess that means it's an A plus movie after all. We'll talk about our love/hate relationship with baseb

  • Episode 123: My Cousin Vinny

    21/05/2018 Duration: 01h18min

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SWEETIE!!!!  Lil Ole Sweetie turned the big 3-5 this weekend, and while she celebrated all week the piece de resistance is definitely getting to watch her favorite court room comedy of all time, My Cousin Vinny! Holy hella this movie is funny and perhaps is most known for Marisa Tomei's star turn and OSCAR win for playing Miss Mona Lisa Vito, a wearer of tight dresses but also a whiz at car mechanics! We love her and this movie about two recent NYU grads (one is Ralph Maccio aka Danielson) who find themselves taking a road trip in Alabama only to be in the wrong place, wrong time when a store clerk at the Sac of Suds get murdered and they were the last ones seen entering the store. Cue Joe Pesci as one of the kids cousins who just passed the NY State Bar Exam, who comes to the rescue as their lawyer, despite not really knowing what the hell he is doing. This is Joe Pesci at his finest and we loved slapping on our best Brooklyn accents and discussing Ralph Macchio's unfortunate dirt lip, details

  • Episode 122: Center Stage

    10/05/2018 Duration: 01h21min

Dance Movie! Dance Movie! We did a dance movie! Center Stage, from the year 2000, was all about the world of ballet and how with perseverance, hard work and conveniently sleeping with the choreographer of a piece you want to be in, can really get you far! Join Jodie, Charlie, Eva, Maureen, Sergei, and Eric as they do their senior year at The American Ballet Academy in hopes of getting one of six slots that will guarantee them a spot in the world renowned ballet company.  But there's some set backs - your typical dancer set backs of injury, evil teachers, scary stage moms and of course BULIMIA. We'll chat about Sweetie's early life as a amateur ballet dancer, the amazing soundtrack that includes the life of Jamiroquai and Mandy Moore, how most of the dancers slash actors suck at acting, and if it was realistic that in one quick change they would have been able to cornrow the heads of 15 girls! BONUS we chat with a real life ballerina, Sweetie's bff Robin Bangert, a professional dancer for The Texas Ballet Thea

  • Episode 121: The Brave Little Toaster

    03/05/2018 Duration: 53min

Who's ready for the darkest cartoon of all time? From 1987, The Brave Little Toaster is considered by some to be Disney's first attempt at the child/adult hybrid cartoon ala Pixar, but despite a happy ending for all the appliances, it's kind of the saddest movie in the world. But we all remember the story right? A slew of antique appliances get left in a summer house and are determined not be left to the dustbin - so go in search of their master in the Big City.  You have Toaster, Blanket, Lamp, Radio, and good ole Kirby the vacuum. So many obstacles get thrown in their way - but they persevere because of teamwork and batteries.   We'll chat about the very scary parts of this film, argue endlessly about whether the Toaster is a girl or a boy (or does it really matter?), try to remember our family toaster (was it four slots or six?!), and Sweetie determines Blanket to be the saddest character in the history of cinema. Period.

  • Episode 120: The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking

    30/04/2018 Duration: 49min

Pippi Longstocking coming into your world! A freckle faced red hair girl you ought to know .... this movie is really terrible but we love it. Whoa-o! Pippi Longstocking was a children's book from the Norwegian writer Astrid Lindgren and in 1988, a movie studio thought the world was ready for an American film version and boy were we ever! This movie is a total garbage bag but in a really good way.  The acting and script is horrible. The plot is dumb. And the 80s mall soundtrack, well frankly it's just the best.   But we LOVED this movie as kids and thought it was hella magical and well it has Dick Van Patton in it as The Glue Man, so really it ain't all bad.  Join us as we talk about what the hell were they thinking with these original songs, how Annika is the wettest blanket in the history of Villa Villekula, and we'll come up with Pippi Longstocking themed porno titles because .... well you'll have to listen to find out.

  • Episode 119: Moonstruck

    27/04/2018 Duration: 57min

Best day ever guys! Carol was in town and we thought it apropos to do her favorite romantic comedy of all time, Moonstruck! A lot of you may not be familiar with this flick from 1987 but Cher won the Oscar for the this role - where she plays a widower who is all ready to settle for some sad sack mama's boy, until she goes to invite his brother to the wedding and gets swept off her feet by .... Nicholas Cage a very intense bread baker with a wooden hand! Okay, crazy plot but it's a really good film, with some great performances and we had such a blast as Carol joined us live and in person to chat it up Sweetie Style. We chatted about alternative titles for this film, the operatic influences in the film, how Cher never gets old both in spirit and physically, if Nick Cage can pull off the romantic lead and the nuances of makeover scenes in movies, and we have to agree this one has a pretty good one. Snap out of it!

  • Episode 118: The Little Mermaid

    23/04/2018 Duration: 01h15min

Look at this podcast. Isn't it neat? We're doing The Little Mermaid, so please take a seat. Wouldn't you think we're the girls, the girls who really love this much sooooo much!  Despite some skipping struggles with our Boston Public Library DVDs, we happily watched The Little Mermaid this weekend.  Released in 1989, this is first movie that came out during what people are now calling The Disney Renaissance and also the last Disney movie to use traditional cell animation but more importantly The Little Mermaid brought us tremendous joy as little girls and was actually Sweety's first movie in the theater! We memorized all the songs, desperately wanted to be a a gorgeous 16 year old mermaid with some really amazing hair and Sweety may or may not have made an jaunty dance routine to the sailor's jig from the soundtrack.  So we give this movie our typical Sweetie Club treatment by warbling through all the songs from the soundtrack, talking about our favorite parts and confusions, and we may or may not have had a l

  • Bonus Episode: Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?

    19/04/2018 Duration: 30min

Do it Rockapella! Carmen Sandiego was one of those educational gameshows for kids that ran on PBS from 1991 to 1995 in response to a study that found out that Americans in the early 90s were a big bunch of dummies and couldn't locate the Pacific Ocean! Duh.  Three kids would compete against one another as gumshoes, new to the ACME detective agency and tracking down a crook (working for the notorious crime boss Carmen Sandiego) who stole a famous world artifact or building, etc by answering questions about world geography correctly.  These kids were so smart! There were three rounds - sort of basic question answer round, a memory like game and then the grand finale - a giant map of a continent and you have to run around the map putting light sensors on various countries in 45 seconds. Hard as hell! So turns out these kids were really smart, they gave dorky but cool prizes (woohoo an atlas! woohoo a recording pen!), and the woman who played the Chief is a badass and best part of the show! So check out some epis

  • Episode 117: The Rescuers Down Under

    11/04/2018 Duration: 01h05min

It's a banner day for the Sweeties as we finally got all the wires and do-dads to configure our DVD player to work! With this old-fangled technology we're now able to watch our favorite Disney classics, and so we pressed our luck at the library to see what Disney oldies and came up with Disney's first animated sequel The Rescuers Down Under! We were HUGE fans of this growing up, watching the bootlegged copy our dad recorded from the TV on the regs, and we credit this movie and Crocodile Dundee with teaching us everything we know about Australia! From 1990, The Rescuers Down Under tells the story of sweet little Cody, a bird lover kidnapped by a the terrifying poacher McLeach who is looking for a rare golden eagle. Bernard and Miss Bianca are two mice from the US who come to save the day as part of the Rescue Aid Society, a worldwide organization run by rodents, that helps kids in trouble.  Even though we hate mice, gosh are those little buddies cute.  We'll chat about all our B-list Disney favs, talk about me

  • Episode 116: Crocodile Dundee

    05/04/2018 Duration: 01h11min

We were in a mood tonight, guys. A mood for DUNDEE. Crocodile Dundee to be exact.  Crocodile Dundee was the third highest grossing movie of 1986 (ranking behind Top Gun and Platoon) and featured two unknown actors (Paul Hogan and Linda Kozlowski) in a fish out of water story - with a down under twist! Our Dad was obsessed with this movie, which is perhaps why we love it still so much today. I mean Sweetie wept at the ending - so you know it's a GREAT film! Come along on our wild ride as we chat about if we would bone Mick Dundee, Sweetie does a very thorough retelling of the classic climatic scene complete with sound effects, and we play a game entitled "Do Your Best Australian Accent" but really we just sound like cockneys slash people with speech impediments.  BONUS we induct not one, not two, but THREE people into the Sweetie Club because we were feeling extra nice tonight.     This episode is brought to you by Sudio. • Episode 115: Batman

    02/04/2018 Duration: 01h10min

Happy Easter! We watched that favorite Easter classic about resurrection  ....... BATMAN! Tim Burton brought us the first film adaption of the caped crusader in 1989 and man did people go bananas.  We like this movie a lot, but does it hold up alongside all the other Batman films that have since come our way? How does Michael Keaton stack up against all the actors that have since come after him? We'll chat about scenes that scared us as little kids, how Vicki Vale is a pretty cool chick with nice clothes and hats but for the love of god STOP SCREAMING, and if Batman would make a good boyfriend or not? Seems like a creepskate to me! PLUS Sweetie tries to induct Bob the Goon into the Sweetie Club, but Sweety throws down a big fat veto! This episode is brought to you by Sudio. • Bonus Episode: GUTS

    28/03/2018 Duration: 26min

Continuing our bonus episode tradition of covering awesome 90s gameshows, today we bring you Global Guts! So like everyone remembers the original Guts right? 3 US kids battled it out in these wacky events, culminating in an epic showdown on the nefarious Agrocrag??! But THEN they got the bright idea to take this shit international, and kids from all over the world came to compete for a piece of the 'Crag.  So basically, like Kids Olympics! Hosted by Mike O'Malley (coincidentally also the name of one of our Dad's friends growing up!) and with overly polished ref Mo, Global Guts taught us that cargo nets, bungees, and lots of dry ice will take you far in life, but the only way to master the 'Crag is if you don't forget to push all the light sensors! We'll chat about what our cool nickname would be on the show, do some Mo impressions, and how cool it must have to get a piece of the 'Crag! Do do do do do you have it? GUTS!   Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. Logo designed by Frankie Donlon. Follow us on Twit

  • Episode 114: Dumb and Dumber

    26/03/2018 Duration: 01h11min

In 1994, The Farrelly Brothers struck comedy gold and started their trend of wacky, gross out films with Dumb and Dumber, starring Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels as bffs Harry and Lloyd who have no food, no jobs, and their pets heads are falling off.  We saw this movie in the theater as little kids, and man did we love it.  It's gross for sure - the plethora of pee, poop and fart jokes are limitless, but there's also really clever comedy here that was not lost on our young, impressionable minds.  We'll talk about our 10 or so most quotable lines, talk again about our love for Jim Carrey during his hey day of films in the mid 90s, and Sweetie dares to use the term "nuance" when describing a scene where someone drinks Turbo Lax and poops their brains out in their date's bathroom with a broken toilet.     Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. • Episode 113: Hook

    21/03/2018 Duration: 01h15min

1991's Hook is a movie that we, while not that fond of, completely respect as a solid 90s movie! What's not to love? Spielberg directed, starring the one, the only Robin Williams, and it's a modern spin of Peter Pan, a childhood classic?! However, this movie is just a touch boring and just doesn't capture the fantasy aspect of Never Neverland for us.  We'll deep dive into basically all we know about Steven Spielberg movies and his daddy issues, play a rousing name calling game, choose our favorite Lost Boy, and go through the several rando cameos in this movie, one that will probably totally blow your mind so you should really listen to this episode slash tell all your friends, mom, and grandma to listen as well.   Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. • Episode 112: The Breakfast Club

    15/03/2018 Duration: 01h17min

Well it only took us 112 episodes, but we did it! We covered The Breakfast Club! Watching TBC seemed to be a right of passage as a teen - wow, look how cool I am. I am watching The Breakfast Club and I GET it! But did we? TBC is probably the most infamous high school film, following the lives of 5 high schoolers from different walks of "life" as they spend a day at Saturday detention. They come in as mostly strangers and leave as pseudo friends.  This movie is about how tough finding your place in high school is .... but really it's about bad parents and impressing people with cleavage lipstick, right? Come along as we talk about our somewhat dislike for Molly Ringwald and while enjoyable, why John Hughes movies don't totally resonate with us. We'll also confess how we never had detention but had some brief periods of rebellion in elementary school and talk about the importance of a good brown bag lunch and why our Dad made the best ones!     This episode is brought to you by Sudio. • Episode 111: Cocktail

    08/03/2018 Duration: 01h03min

It's Tom Cruise week in Sweetie Land, and we decided to drink a couple of cocktails AND watch the 1988 HIT (slash in the running for best worst movie ever) Cocktail! Cocktail tells the story of young, cocky Brian Flannigan, who is fresh out of the army with lots of ideas yet little real life experience.  So he moves to New York City and starts bartending, meets a toxic friend, knocks up a girl under a sex waterfall in Jamaica, and comes to the realization that life sucks but if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything! Sweety had never seen this movie before (gasp) but Sweetie thought it was cool AF when she was eight, so we had a good time making fun of its bad writing and 80s cliches.  We'll chat all about Sweetie's crush on Tom Cruise, how odd it feels to look back on the 80s yuppie culture, and Sweety tells a fun story about how she almost became a bartender but got too scared people would puke all over her.  Interested in joining our Sweetie Bookclub? We'll be reading a book a month (or possi

  • Episode 110: The Shawshank Redemption

    01/03/2018 Duration: 01h11min

The Oscars are this Sunday and in honor of that overrated gold statuette, we're rolling out a Sweety favorite that also happened to be nominated for a billion Oscars back in 1995 .... The Shawshank Redemption! Dammit, this movie is so good it's almost painful! Originally a Stephen King novella, The Shawshank Redemption tells the story of an innocent man and the lengths he'll go to achieve freedom but ultimately it's a story about how everyone needs a BFF like Morgan Freeman because the guy is the SHIT! Join us as we chat about how maybe prison wouldn't be so bad if you got to read all the time, what prison jobs we would choose, how Sweety picked a quote from this movie for her high school year book quote and all about the wonderful world of Stephen King stories and books and if in fact movies CAN be better than the book?!!     This episode is brought to you by Sudio. • Episode 109: Working Girl

    26/02/2018 Duration: 01h08min

Sweety starts her first day of her NEW job today(Congrats Sweety, smell ya later unemployment) and we thought it was a perfect time to cover a movie all about the trials and tribulations of the 9-5, Working Girl! Starring Melanie Griffith, Sigourney Weaver, and Harrison Ford, Working Girl is about lady empowerment but also giant hair and poor eyeshadow choices from circa 1988 Staten Island, how hot Harrison Ford was back in 1988, why you should never mix tequila shots and unknown dosages of valium, andddd why every woman needs more Joan Cusack like friends and less sneakers with pencil skirts.  BONUS we Call Carol™ and chat about her thoughts on this movie and what is what like being a working girl (not a prostitute, get your minds out of the gutter!) in the 1980s.     Follow us on Twitter @TheSweetieClub and on Instagram @LargeMargeSentUs

  • Episode 108: Kindergarten Cop

    22/02/2018 Duration: 01h11min

Big news guys! This week we collaborated with our pals Sean and Dan at The Writer's Bone podcast, recorded at a real podcast studio in Cambridge, MA and .... chatted happily about the best Arnold Schwarzenegger movie ever, Kindergarten Cop! Whew, this movie scared the bejesus out of us when we were kindergarteners! I mean is this a kid's movie? You be the judge! The Sweeties and the WB boys talk all about Arnie, some of our fondest memories of kindergarten, do some fabulous (or horrible) Schwarzenegger impressions and continue our discussion of why men with greasy, long hair are the ultimate villain. It's not a toooooomah!

  • Episode 107: Selena

    15/02/2018 Duration: 01h20min

Another year, another Valentine's Day sans valentines for the Sweeties! Welp, who the F cares because we made Selena Quintanilla Perez our valentine and watched one of the greatest biopics of all time centered around bangs and a sequined bustier! YASSS, that's right.  Selena, from 1997, skyrocketed J. Lo to fame but more importantly brought Selena, the slain Tejano superstar national if not worldwide attention. We were obsessed with this movie as kids, had the soundtrack, sang along in jibberish Spanish..... and not much has changed today! We'll go over each and every song (lucky you), discuss in length Selena's outfits and fashion trends, and induct two new Sweeties into the Sweetie Club 4 Life.  BIDI BIDI BOM BOM BITCHES.   Follow us on Twitter @TheSweetieClub and on Instagram @LargeMargeSentUs
