CANTERBURY SANS FRONTIÈRES: Episode Sixty-one We at Gonzo Web Radio are very proud to bring you Canterbury Sans Frontières - a podcast dedicated to the music of the 'Canterbury Scene' and more. Creator Matthew Watkins writes: As with Canterbury Soundwaves , a new three-hour episode will be released with each full moon. I decided to wind down Canterbury Soundwaves so that I didn't end up (i) repeating myself, (ii) scraping the bottom of the Canterbury barrel, or (iii) becoming increasingly tangential. This new podcast broadens the musical remit, so it'll be about one-third 'Canterbury sound', together with progressive/psychedelic/experimental music from the Canterbury of today, the remainder being a mix of music from various times and places which I feel to be in a similar spirit of creative adventurousness. I'll be doing a lot less talking, and the programme will be less expository – so no interviews, barely listenable bootlegs, etc. I also plan to include guest one-hour mixes from various musicians

RING THAT BELL: The Friends of Lincolnshire Time and Tide Bell is a loose affiliation of supporters and artists forming a Community Arts Group, bringing Marcus Vergette's sculpture to the Lincolnshire Coast, one part of a permanent installation of Time and Tide Bells around Britain's coast, rung by the sea at high tide. We are using the arts to stimulate thought about our coastal environment and the issues of global warming and sea level rise. We aim to spark conversations about the coastline's past, present and future with a programme of art exhibitions and events. Lincolnshire Time and Tide Bell Community Interest Company is a not-for-profit company, registered at Companies House. Company Number 10934941, the objects of which are: a. To install and maintain Marcus Vergette's Time and Tide Bell on the Lincolnshire coast as a work of art for the public benefit. b. To raise public awareness of Lincolnshire's coastal environment and people's relationship with the sea throughout history and into the future.

Date Published: 30th March 2018 I first read about Steve Andrews in one of C. J. Stone's books, in which he chronicles his comings and goings within various sub-groupings of what could generally be referred to as the 'Alternative Society' in the UK. He described how Steve lived in a house in Cardiff, surrounded by houseplants, and with a giant Madagascan hissing cockroach for company. He told the story of how Steve had achieved a certain degree of cultural notoriety in the early 1970s when he appeared on stage at various rock festivals singing a peculiar song about "extracting the latex from a rubber ducky". This song attracted a fair modicum of Andy Warhol's mythical 'fifteen minutes of fame' and Steve, who also appears under the moniker of 'The Bard of Ely', ended up with a small, but significant, cult following. Once upon a time, when the world was young, I was in a gorgeous art deco hotel in Lytham Saint Anne's. At the time, I was the editor of a particularly dodgy magazine called Quest. The magazine wasn't particularly dodgy, but the bloke who published it was the worst shyster of any of the numerous shysters for whom I have worked over the years. He left a trail of bankrupt companies and unpaid debts wherever he went, and one of the major reasons I was in the northwest of England that weekend was to try and screw a couple of grand out of him (partially what he owed me, and partly just because I could). It has always been my experience in life, that the only way that one can deal effectively with shysters is to out-shyster them, and so when I had been in Las Vegas a few weeks before, as one of the guests at a monumentally uninteresting UFO conference, I racked up my expenses to an insane degree. I once described my career as having consisted of "hanging around in bars with celebrities". And this is not that far from the truth. I have been interviewing famous, and not so famous, people about sex, drugs, and rock and roll (supposedly the latter) for well over 35yrs now, and I have found that - unfortunately - quite a few of the people with whom I converse in the course of my journalistic duties, singularly fail to live up to their reputations as being 'damn nice chaps'. No-one will probably be that surprised to know that some of the rock and rollers with whom I have had dealings over the years are selfish, self-absorbed, greedy and sometimes just plain nasty. But, luckily, the really bad ones are in the minority. Sadly, the really nice ones are also few and far between. One of the nicest people whom I have come to know over the past five years of sitting in the editorial chair of this fine publication is a keyboard player called Erik Norlander. He has always been kind, helpful, and generous. Back in

I interview a lot of people. Mostly, musicians, but also more than a smattering of artists, authors, scientists and explorers. And I will admit (somewhat shame-facedly) that I do a lot of these interviews on autopilot. Last night, I was due to interview Martin Gordon. Martin is, as I am sure that the musical cognoscenti amongst you will know, a semi-legendary figure in that weird space where the artier end of pop music intersects with the equally arty end of rock music, and over the years he has played bass with such luminaries as Sparks, Jet, and Radio Stars. He even played bass with the Rolling Stones during their peculiar disco period and worked as producer, and in other capacities, with such people as George Michael, Boy George, Blur, Primal Scream and Kylie Minogue. Over the years, he has released over a dozen interesting and arty solo albums, and - when he emailed me a few weeks ago to tell me about a record called 'Thanks For All The Fish' - I realised that he was just about to release another one.

I will be the first to admit that I never really got The Fall, although I came very close at times. But I always enjoyed reading his - often hilarious - outbursts of misanthropy. As I have got older, I have become more of an old curmudgeon myself, and I have always had a bad attitude. But I pale into significance besides Mark E Smith of The Fall who died this week. He was part of the rich vein of Beefheartness that runs through the Manchester punk scene. Even the first Manchester punks, The Buzzcocks followed in Van Vliet's footsteps to a greater or lesser degree, and their founder's next band Magazine did so even more strikingly, but nobody did it quite like Mark E Smith. I was a little misleading in the first paragraph. Mark E Smith wasn't of The Fall, he WAS The Fall. in his own words: "If it's me and your granny on bongos, then it's the Fall." One of my favourite of his quotes was when he compared Soviet Russia to Doncaster, and claimed that he would 'nuke' it in a shot. But, arguably it was his ex

As many readers of my burblings will know, I spent my formative years in Hong Kong, only leaving a few months before I was twelve. I do not use the term “formative years” lightly, because a large amount of the stuff which has shaped my adult life came from my childhood years in the last jewel of the Imperial crown. I still dream in Cantonese, and remember much of my childhood, which in many ways was weird and wonderful, and in other ways would - these days - be judged as being quite horrific. Other things were pretty normal. For my sixth birthday, for example, Uncle Mac, who was some office acquaintance of my Dad, a leading light in the local Amateur Dramatics Society, and - I discovered many years later - a notorious homosexual, (a snippet of information which is totally irrelevant to the main thrust of this narrative), gave me a book which would change my life. These days children don't seem to read at this age; in recent years I have given youngsters of my acquaintance books that I think they would enjoy

During the second half of 1979, I was living in Canada; a suburb of Toronto, to be exact. I was staying with one bunch of relatives, and socialising with another bunch, who were nearer my age. Just to place this into context, that was the summer I turned 20. Then, as now, the twin passions which fuelled my existence were rock and roll and the natural world. I spent much of my time wandering about the creeks and scrubland in the area, watching such delightful creatures as snapping turtles, mudpuppies, and spring peepers. I even had the opportunity to see the beginning of the North-South migration of the mighty monarch butterfly; something which will stay with me for the rest of my days. The sight of millions of these gaudily coloured insects heaped onto trees, whose branches were literally bowing down under the weight, is something that I will never forget.
