CANTERBURY SANS FRONTIÈRES: Episode Fifty-Two We at Gonzo Web Radio are very proud to bring you Canterbury Sans Frontières - a podcast dedicated to the music of the 'Canterbury Scene' and more. Creator Matthew Watkins writes: As with Canterbury Soundwaves , a new three-hour episode will be released with each full moon. I decided to wind down Canterbury Soundwaves so that I didn't end up (i) repeating myself, (ii) scraping the bottom of the Canterbury barrel, or (iii) becoming increasingly tangential. This new podcast broadens the musical remit, so it'll be about one-third 'Canterbury sound', together with progressive/psychedelic/experimental music from the Canterbury of today, the remainder being a mix of music from various times and places which I feel to be in a similar spirit of creative adventurousness. I'll be doing a lot less talking, and the programme will be less expository – so no interviews, barely listenable bootlegs, etc. I also plan to include guest one-hour mixes from various musicians f

Those jolly nice folks at Gonzo Multimedia (that's us baybee) have just published an extraordinary book by Neil Nixon and Owen Wilson. The introduction reads: “Please allow me to introduce myself, I'm a man of wealth and taste.” And what man of wealth and taste could bear to be without his own jukebox, in his own residence, showcasing a selection of the inspired, insane, eclectic and cultish; the totality of which demonstrates our man's wealth and taste to anyone who should happen to peruse the contents? I am very fond of Judge Smith. He has had one of the most peculiar career arcs of anybody I know. At university, in the mid-1960s, together with Peter Hammill, he formed the notoriously spiky progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator with Judge on drums. They were the first band signed to Charisma Records, but Judge left the band after the first single. The split was, apparently, perfectly amicable, and he was to work with Hammill and other alumni of VdGG over the years. He then formed a peculiar jazz-rock band called Heebalob, which included sax player David Jackson, who went on to join VdGG. The third VdGG album - H to He, Who Am the Only One - featured one of the bands most memorable tracks. The opening song, 'Killer'– the song about a killer shark – featured bits from an old song by Judge, called 'A Cloud as Big as a Man's Hand'. Tony Palmer is undoubtedly one of the best known British film directors of the past 50yrs. However, music lovers will be more impressed by the fact that he was the bloke who wrote the liner notes for the Yellow Submarine album by The Beatles, and was – as far as I am aware – the first person to compare them as songwriters with the classical composer Franz Schubert (1797-1828). Over the years, Tony Palmer has been involved with a number of Beatles-related projects, but I had never heard how this relationship began until one day several years ago, when Tony, my wife and I were sitting down, eating cake and swilling back tea. Back in 1976, the legendary Lou Reizner came up with one of the more peculiar Beatles related projects. All This and World War II is a 1976 musical documentary that juxtaposes Beatles songs, performed by a number of musicians, with World War II newsreel footage and 20th Century Fox films from the 1940s. Back in the late 1980s, when the Internet was not much more than a twinkle in Tim Berners-Lee's eye, I got mildly obsessed by Teletext, which was about as cutting edge as televisions could get. Then in 1993 the ITV and C4 Teletext services suffered an enormous upheaval, and all the different pages (proto websites) that I used to view each day ceased to be. Dana Gillespie has been a singer, songwriter and actress for over 50 years. She was part of that charmed generation who grew up in the early 60s and was lucky enough to have all the freedoms that that era entailed. Like so many other kids, she discovered that the brave new world of rock music, and more specifically the blues, called out to her and offered her something that she had never dreamed of. Half a century later, she's still singing blues, and doing it remarkably well.
