• Make Mine Multiversity Episode 112: Where In the World Are Jack Kirby's Eternals?

    07/04/2023 Duration: 01h10min

It's grab bag time here at Make Mine Multiversity as we enter the home stretch of our Eternals journey. We're filling in the gap between Vol. 4 & 5 aka the fallow period known as the 2010s as well as picking up the more minor issues we've missed along the way. For those reading along, we discussed "Hulk" (Vol 2.) #49, "Thor: The Deviants Saga" #1–5, "Avengers" (vol. 8) #4, "Eternals Forever" One-shot, "Symbiote Spider-Man Crossroads" #4-5, "Silver Surfer" Annual #1 (1988) and Incredible Hercules #116.There's also mention of "Fantastic Four Unlimited" #10, the OG "Atlantis Attacks" Annual Crossover, OG "Contest of Champions," "Real Heroes" #1, "Quasar" #51-58 & the "Starblast" event "Fall of the Hulks: Alpha," and "All New Invaders" #3-5 & #13Because of the chaos of all that, I won't be listing collected editions. And no more jokes. Just join us as we slowly lose our minds!Next time, it's MOVIE NIGHT. Grab your popcorn and a friend because you'll want someone to talk to as we watch Eternals from 20

  • Make Mine Multiversity Episode 111: Don't Wake the Dreamer! Eternals vol. 4

    17/03/2023 Duration: 01h19min

Speaking of The Forgotten One. today's podcast concerns a volume of "Eternals" that a lot of people have probably never read. The fourth proper volume of "Eternals" came out in 2008. We took a look at "Eternals" #1-9 and Annual #1, which you can find those collected in "Eternals," Vol. 1: To Slay a God (#1-6) and Vol. 2: Manifest Destiny (#7-9, Annual #1). It's not much longer now, we're almost caught up to the present day.Next time, we enter the wasteland of "Eternals" conflict. They don't get another eponymous comic until the Kieron Gillen run. We decided to bridge that gap with a handful of issues. We will definitely be reading "Hulk" (vol 2.) #49 from May 2012; "Thor: The Deviants Saga" #1–5 from February 2012 - May 2012; Avengers (vol. 8) #4 from September 2018; "Eternals Forever" One-shot from 2021; and "Symbiote Spider-Man Crossroads" #4-5 from 2021.We will also be trying to track down "Silver Surfer Annual" #1 (1988), "FF Unlimited" #10, and "Incredible Hercules" #116. There's are more tangentially rel

  • Make Mine Multiversity Episode 110: It's About Terrifying Sausage Fingers, Innit? Gaiman & JRJR's Eternals

    03/03/2023 Duration: 01h07min

Despite our detour into the Marvel Max era with Chuck Austen's infamous and nearly impossible to track down "The Eternal" at the start, we're back to talk "Eternals" Vol. 3 #1-7 aka the one by Neil Gaiman and John Romita Jr. Digressions include the history of comics as summarized by 60 years of lawsuits, what is up with that art, and whether or not the comic worked as intended/did we like what was intended. At least we're out of the 90s, is all I (Elias) can say.Next time, we take a jump one year into the future to read the FOURTH volume of "Eternals" #1-9 and Annual #1. You can find those collected in "Eternals," Vol. 1: To Slay a God (#1-6) and Vol. 2: Manifest Destiny (#7-9, Annual #1). We're in the home stretch everyone!

  • Make Mine Multiversity Episode 109: Oy Gevalt, These Eternals Gestalt

    17/02/2023 Duration: 01h19min

This time, we read some seriously weird books. We started with some classic 90s "Heroes for Hire" (Vol. 1) #4-7 (from November 1997 - January 1998) and then we read the bombastic "New Eternals: Apocalypse Now" (also known as Eternals: The New Breed) #1 (from February 2000.) This is around the place where Marvel creators lose track of continuity. That means some pretty wild swings. Not all of them connect.Next time is more "Eternals," but with a more classic reading selection. We are reading Eternals (vol. 3) #1–7 by Neil Gaiman and John Romita Jr. We will also have a brief discussion about Chuck Austen's Marvel MAX Eternals story, but you don't have to worry about tracking that one down.

  • Make Mine Multiversity Episode 108: Who By Duck and Who By Devil; or, How Wrong Were We in 2022?

    03/02/2023 Duration: 47min

2023 is here and that means it's time for Elias and Jaina to litigate their 2022 predictions for Marvel. Who will win? Will there be another tie? And how disappointed with this make them? Oh, and we announced what the stakes are for our 2023 predictions. If Elias wins, we're forced to read "Major X" by Rob Liefeld and if Jaina wins, we'll be forced to read the "Captain America" arc 'Castaway in Dimension Z' by Rick Remender & John Romita Jr.Next time, however, we've got more Eternals in a VERY weird set of books: "Heroes for Hire" (Vol. 1) #4-7 (from November 1997 - January 1998) and "The New Eternals: Apocalypse Now" (also known as Eternals: The New Breed) #1 (from February 2000.) You can find these issues collected in "Eternals: The Complete Saga Omnibus" and "Luke Cage, Iron Fist & the Heroes For Hire Vol. 1." It may be easier to read on Marvel Unlimited though, if that is something you have access too. The episode should be accessible even if you don't read the issues!

  • Make Mine Multiversity, Episode 107: Totally X-Treme E-Ternals

    20/01/2023 Duration: 01h29min

90s Eternals got dark! But maybe that's a good thing? At least dark is a tone; it's better to be dark than bland. Or is it? We talk about some very tacky comics that have a bit of life to them. But if you were looking for the point the "Eternals" comics fell off a cliff, this episode will have the answers you seek.Next time we are reading a truly eclectic collection of books. Feel free to follow along with "Heroes for Hire" (Vol.1 ) #4-7 (from November 1997, January 1998) and "The New Eternals: Apocalypse Now" (also known as Eternals: The New Breed) #1 (from February 2000). You can find these issues collected in "Eternals: The Complete Saga Omnibus" and "Luke Cage, Iron Fist & the Heroes For Hire Vol. 1." It may be easier to read on Marvel Unlimited though, if that is something you have access too. The episode should be accessible even if you don't read the issues!

  • Make Mine Multiversity, Episode 106: Dream a Second Volume of Eternals

    06/01/2023 Duration: 01h54s

It's a new year but we're not nearly done with our read through of all of The Eternals. Join us as we dig into the twelve-issue maxi-series "The Eternals" (Vol. 2) and discover why Ikaris really shouldn't be the poster boy for these characters with digressions into the Royal Rumble, Simonson NOT on "Thor," and Kieron Gillen's first tenure on "X-Men." Give us a Vampirio and Kro issue you cowards!Next time, we're reading Avengers (Vol. 1 ) #308-310 (October 1989- November 1989); Eternals: The Herod Factor (November 1991); Avengers (Vol. 1 ) #361, #374-375 (April 1993, May 1994 -June 1994) and possibly Avengers Spotlight #35 which features Gilgamesh and Sprite. There's no good way to find these issues outside of bargain bins, digital comics sellers, and Marvel Unlimited! Gotta love this weird, weird era.For the curious though, you can find "Avengers" #308-310 & "Marvel Spotlight" #35 in "Avengers" by John Byrne Omnibus, "Avengers" #361 & "Marvel Spotlight" #35 in "Eternals" Cosmic Origins," and "Ete

  • Make Mine Multiversity Episode 105: How Wrong We Will Be in 2023

    28/12/2022 Duration: 01h07min

It's the end of the year holiday season, so we are taking a break from our regularly scheduled program. The Eternals are forever, that's kind of the point of them (but will anyone care?) This week's episode takes a look back at the year in Marvel. The MCU may feel like it's going off the rails, but there are still some fun comics, even beyond the world of "X-Men." Find out which comics we think we'll find ourselves returning to again and again. We also have our annual predictions bet, where we try and guess at what's going to happen with Marvel stories across media. The movies have felt like the center of Marvel for so long, but maybe 2023 is the year that changes. Did this year teach us to love crossover events? Is there hope for the future of Marvel video games? Are there romance options in Marvel: Midnight Suns? Next time, we return to the huge mega Eternals read, and it's the last time the issues will be easy to find for a good long while. We are reading Eternals (vol. 2) issues #1–12, a limited series tha

  • Make Mine Multiversity Episode 104: What If...The Eternals Were Good?

    02/12/2022 Duration: 01h07min

We saw the genesis of the Eternals. We saw the reinterpretation of the Eternals (with a side order of TOO MUCH RING CYCLE.) Now we get the reinvention of the Eternals in the pages of "What If..." (Vol. 1) #23-30, a modern adventure spotlighting the Deviants in "Iron Man" Annual #6, and a fun story with Starfox of all people in "Avengers" (Vol. 1) #246-248. Vision is the creepiest one there, and they meet the President in the 80s!If you are reading along at home, you can find these issues on Marvel Unlimited and Hoopla. Trade readers can find them in the first half of "Eternals: The Dreaming Celestial Saga" or in the humungous "Eternals: The Complete Saga Omnibus." If you have that last one send us a picture, we'd love to see it.Next time we are taking a short break from all this Eternals-ing to close out 2022 but after that we'll be back in the new year with "The Eternals" Vol. 2 #1-12, helpfully found on Marvel Unlimited or collected in the back half of "The Dreaming Celestial Saga."

  • Make Mine Multiversity Episode 103: Thor: The Eternals Saga, Part 2: Gotterdammerung

    18/11/2022 Duration: 58min

It's epic vs epic as we continue through 70s "Thor." Our goal is the same- to trace the story of Marvel's Eternals through every one of their major comic appearances. But I don't think anyone was prepared for how Nordic these issues get. This stuff is steeped in mythology, and we do our best to sift through the pieces of the deeply retconned Marvel continuity. Marvel maniacs aren't going to want to miss it.If you are reading along at home, you can find these issues on Marvel Unlimited and Hoopla. Trade readers can find them in "Thor: The Eternals Saga" Vol. 2 or the back half of “Thor and the Eternals: The Celestial Saga” or in the humungous "Eternals: The Complete Saga Omnibus." If you have that last one send us a picture, we'd love to see it.Next time we are ranging wide across the Marvel universe. Follow along by reading "What If..." (Vol. 1) #23-30, Iron Man Annual #6, and Avengers (Vol. 1 ) #246-248. A good place to find those issues is on Marvel Unlimited or if you want to seek out

  • Make Mine Multiversity Episode 102: Thor: The Eternals Saga, Part 1: Vampiro Lives

    07/11/2022 Duration: 01h05s

We're continuing our trek through Eternals history with the aptly named Thor and the Eternals: The Celestial Saga. Or is it Thor: The Eternals Saga? Depends on the collection! We read Thor (Vol. 1) #283-291, which is Roy Thomas' attempt at completing the story Kirby left dangling less than a year prior. Does it work? Well, we got a vampire-themed pro-wrester Eternal and a lot of Odin dunking. We also spend a lot of time flying around with Thor yelling ENOW and HIE. You decide, true believers! If you are reading along at home, you can find these issues on Marvel Unlimited and Hoopla. Trade readers can find them in "Thor: The Eternals Saga" Vol. 1 or the first half of “Thor and the Eternals: The Celestial Saga” or in "Eternals: The Complete Saga Omnibus."Next time, the rest of the issues (#292-301). Find them in the same place as above (and in "Thor: The Eternals Saga" Vol. 2, of course.)

  • Make Mine Multiversity Episode 101: Jack Kirby’s Eternals Are a Girl’s Worst Enemy, Part 2

    21/10/2022 Duration: 46min

Our gargantuan book club series rolls on! This week, we finish up Jack Kirby's Eternals series, which means "Eternals" issue #11-19, plus the first annual. There's a lot that's the same in this installment, but we also see some first appearances, and some disappointing villains. Which doesn't include the Deviants, who are not villains, but the secret protagonist of Eternals comics. Join us to hear all about it!Will the Eternals ever move past their smugness? Will the Celestials ever make sense? Is this a story too wrapped up in 70s racism? Will Jaina and Elias ever remember the name of Dr. Damien's daughter? All that and more in episode 101.

  • Make Mine Multiversity Episode 100: Jack Kirby’s Eternals Are a Girl’s Worst Enemy, Part 1

    07/10/2022 Duration: 01h02min

100 episodes! This is a milestone we've been thinking about for months and we wanted to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for listening this long, be this your first episode, your fifteenth, your fiftieth, or your hundredth. We've got a lot of fun things planned for the next 100 (or at least the next 15-20) and we hope you'll join us for the ride.To kick our 100th episode off, we're starting our walk through Eternals history - another mammoth book club series, though one a little less coherent than the Annihilation Saga - by chilling with the King and reading the first ten issues of the series that started it all: "Eternals" (1976.) Jaina and Elias debate the merits of the series, the demerits of the premise, and decry the sexism that pervades the book...and the eternal smugness of our protagonists. If you are reading along at home, you can find these issues on Marvel Unlimited and Hoopla. Trade readers can find them in "Eternals By Jack Kirby," Vol. 1 or the first half of the “Complete Collection” o

  • Make Mine Multiversity Episode 99: The Judgment of X

    16/09/2022 Duration: 01h35min

We are about to embark on a huge reading journey, so we are checking in with our Krakoan friends one more time. Turns out, the X-Books are better than ever. New creators are shaking things up, and some familiar folks take their work in a fun new direction. We have as lot of gushing to do about books we like, and maybe a few critical things to say about a couple of books in particular. If you keep up with us, you probably know what's coming.Next time is our hundreth episode and we are starting a supersized book club. If you are reading along at home, we are starting with the first 10 (not 11) issues of Jack Kirby's "Eternals" from 1976. Hoopla and Marvel Unlimited both have easy access to these issues. Trade readers can find these issues in "Eternals By Jack Kirby", Vol. 1 or the first half of the “Complete Collection” or in "Eternals: The Complete Saga Omnibus." And yes, we know the first volume has #1-11, not #1-10 but it was a cleaner breaking point.

  • Make Mine Multiversity Episode 98: Taking Us to Task(master)

    02/09/2022 Duration: 57min

We've been talking about it for nearly 2 years and it only took the threat of the next book club for Jaina to finally convinced Elias to read the 2010 "Taskmaster" mini-series. Spoilers: I liked it! Much like the last Van Lente series. Well, maybe not quite like that one. In this episode, we discuss the series written by Fred van Lente, illustrated by Jefte Palo, colored by Jean-Francois Beaulieu and lettered by Dave Lanphear and it's many successes and oh so many flaws. It...has not aged like fine wine. Or is it like week old baklava at a greek diner?Wait. What was I writing about again? Hold on. I have to eat some chicken souvlaki. If you are reading along with our book club, our next big read begins, starting with the first 10 (not 11) issues of Jack Kirby's "Eternals" from 1976. Hoopla and Marvel Unlimited both have easy access to these issues. Trade readers can find these issues in "Eternals By Jack Kirby", Vol. 1 or the first half of the “Complete Collection” or in "Eternals: The Complete Saga Omnibus."

  • Make Mine Multiversity Episode 97: Is Dan Slott's Fantastic Four Any Good?

    19/08/2022 Duration: 01h10min

We talk about the Avengers a whole bunch of this podcast. And Spider-Man. We spent a long time with the Guardians of the Galaxy. But it's been too long since we've checked in on Marvel's first family. It's a fascinating run; Dan Slott's vision is brought to life by a plethora of talented artists. The series had some incredible highs, but some dreadful lows. Unfortunately, the latter probably eclipse the former, but that's what makes the conversation interesting! If you are reading along with our book club you'll want to check out "Taskmaster: Unthinkable" from 2010. It's four issues and collected in a single trade. Not a tough read at all! Find it through your local library or back-issue bin. The issues are also available through Marvel Unlimited.

  • Make Mine Multiversity Episode 96: "Hawkeye" by Fraction and Aja Part 2: Rio Bravo Bro

    05/08/2022 Duration: 01h43min

It's Hawkeye time! Again! Specifically the second half of 2012's classic by Matt Fraction, David Aja, Matt Hollingsworth, and Chris Eliopoulos (with Annie Wu and Francesco Francavilla rounding out the regular artists.) Jaina and Elias are digging into the tumultuous last 12 issues (that's #12-22 and an annual, for those keeping score at home,) the contemporaneous history of the issues, and fighting to figure out what order to talk about the dang issues in. Seriously! It's nearly as complicated as some of the "War of Kings" stuff.Next book club, we're reading the blessedly short "Taskmaster: Unthinkable" from 2010. It's four issues and collected in a single trade. Easy! Find it through your local library or back-issue bin. Next episode however, things take a turn for the fantastic. Excelsior!

  • Make Mine Multiversity Episode 95: "Hawkeye" By Fraction & Aja Part 1: Hawkguy Meet Hawkeye

    15/07/2022 Duration: 01h41min

It's Hawkeye time! Specifically 2012's classic by Matt Fraction, David Aja, Matt Hollingsworth, and Chris Eliopolous (with Annie Wu and Francesco Francivilla rounding out the regular artists.) Jaina and Elias revisit the first eleven issues of this seminal classic about a sad sack avenger, a different sad sack YOUNG avenger, and an apartment building in Bed-Stuy. Does it hold up? Yes. Duh. Is it still a perfect masterpiece? Welllllllll.....Next episode, things get coastal as we check in on the back half of "Hawkeye" with #12-22 and the annual! That's volumes 3 & 4 of the trades and there is no set order because existence is pain and trust us we get into it. Comics!

  • Make Mine Multiversity Episode 94: Judgment of X

    01/07/2022 Duration: 01h16min

After quite a number of episodes away, our monthly (now quarterly-ish) look at every X-book published since "House of X/Powers of X" returns with a new title and a new coat of paint. In addition, there's a small detour into one of the X one-shots we loved: "Giant-Size X-Men: Thunderbird" #1. Oh, and apparently Elias is British or has been reading Kieron's newsletter too much because he kept spelling Judgment as Judgement.Next time, we're digging deep legendary "Hawkeye" comic series by Matt Fraction, David Aja, Annie Wu et al. Join us for the first 11 issues and a discussion of how we've been pronouncing David Aja's name wrong all this time.

  • Make Mine Multiversity Episode 93: Mental Organism Designed Only for Kritiquing

    17/06/2022 Duration: 01h01s

This year we've read comics, we've even read a book, but in this episode we are doing neither. This is an episode all about a TV show. A short-lived, pretty fun TV show about everybody's favorite big evil head, MODOK. You know MODOK? The Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing? George Tarelton if you're feeling nasty. Turns out Marvel released a weird animated sitcom about the guy on Hulu. Though now cancelled, we discuss the series highs and lows, as we dream of a future with more MODOK.Still keeping up with our book club? Well get ready for some good old fashioned comics! Our next book club episode is all about Hawkeye. The Matt Fracion/David Aja run to be exact. This is going to be a two parter, so read the first twelve issues for next time. You should read the annual too!
