  • Canterbury Sans Frontieres #49

    10/08/2017

CANTERBURY SANS FRONTIÈRES: Episode Forty—Nine We at Gonzo Web Radio are very proud to bring you Canterbury Sans Frontières - a podcast dedicated to the music of the 'Canterbury Scene' and more. Creator Matthew Watkins writes: As with Canterbury Soundwaves , a new three-hour episode will be released with each full moon. I decided to wind down Canterbury Soundwaves so that I didn't end up (i) repeating myself, (ii) scraping the bottom of the Canterbury barrel, or (iii) becoming increasingly tangential. This new podcast broadens the musical remit, so it'll be about one-third 'Canterbury sound', together with progressive/psychedelic/experimental music from the Canterbury of today, the remainder being a mix of music from various times and places which I feel to be in a similar spirit of creative adventurousness. I'll be doing a lot less talking, and the programme will be less expository – so no interviews, barely listenable bootlegs, etc. I also plan to include guest one-hour mixes from various musicians

  • GONZO MAGAZINE #244/5

    20/07/2017

What? Another article about the Beatles? The band split up 47 years ago, two of them are now dead, and the remaining ones lurch happily from project to project but have not done anything which is truly culturally significant for many years. “Why does everybody love the Beatles?” asked Olivia as we started to write this introduction together, with me slaving over a hot iPad in North Devon and her typing busily away in Norfolk. It's a pretty good question. And, as I really had no idea what I was going to dictate in this introduction for a radio show that is basically a jolly chat between me and my old mate Neil, I'm going to have a bash at answering that question. It would be easy to say that the Beatles are important because their music was so bloody good. But the only Beatles records anybody usually cites were produced after 1965, and even then, the band were responsible for some terrible records buried amongst the rest. One record that has already irritated the hell out of me is 'She's a Woman'. For fuck

  • GONZO WEEKLY #241: Carol Hodge interview

    29/06/2017

Carol Hodge is a remarkable young lady and possessed of a remarkable talent. I first heard about her when she joined ex-Crass vocalist Steve Ignorant about halfway through his 'Last Supper' world tour, in which he performed songs by Crass for the last time, at least in the style to which we have become accustomed over the past three and a half decades. Carol had some pretty big boots to fill, as she was singing material originally recorded by the legendary Eve Libertine back in the day. Her renditions of 'Shaved Women' and 'Poison in a Pretty Pill' were particularly impressive. For lots of reasons, mostly health ones, I was not able to go to any of the shows, but I followed the tour avidly on YouTube. The final show, at what was then The Shepherd's Bush Empire in London, is now available in a swish DVD set with a cover by yours truly, from Gonzo. So you can see it for yourself. There were several highlights from this show; not the least being when Eve Libertine joined her on stage for an impromptu rendition

  • GONZO #239: Jon meets Tony Klinger

    15/06/2017

One of the things I like most about this job is that I meet a wide range of interesting people, many of whom I would not have met otherwise. A case in point is Tony Klinger. He is one of those people whose work I have followed for years without realising it; he started out working out on The Avengers, which as any Fule Kno was an iconic 1960s TV show featuring the inestimably suave Patrick Macnee as artistically undifferentiated secret agent John Steed, and the delectable Diana Rigg as Emma Peel (1960s showbiz Argot for M-Appeal, or 'Man Appeal'). The very British surrealism whimsy of these television shows, I suspect, acted as an excellent training ground for the young Klinger, who went on – at a surprisingly early age – to work on action-adventure films such as Gold (1974) and Shout at the Devil (1976). Klinger also made rock films, documenting Deep Purple "Deep Purple Riser Over Japan" and "The Butterfly Ball" and The Who, including The Kids Are Alright (1979). It also has to be said that he comes from a
