  • Four Seasons of Church Life

    18/09/2022 Duration: 44min

In this personal message, David Varney teaches on the Four Seasons of Church Life as understood from the perspective of Israel's experience. In Deuteronomy, Moses addresses the entire covenant community before they cross over the Jordan River to enter the Promised Land. Church planting can sometimes feel like a long period in the wilderness, but we see from Deuteronomy 8 that there is purpose in the wilderness - God means for us to grow in humility and faith, to depend on him above everything else in life. Wilderness is not fun, but it is necessary. It is only there that growth in humility and faith can truly develop. In this sermon we discuss each of the four seasons a church may find itself in, and think about how we may progress towards longterm health and multiplication. • 3 Features of an Outstanding Monarch

    11/09/2022 Duration: 31min

In this sermon we reflect on the life of Queen Elizabeth II who died on Thursday 8 September 2022, Britain's longest-reigning monarch. Throughout her life we have seen the Queen embody the Three Features of an Outsanding Monarch - one who: 1. Brings Unity 2. Shows Humility 3. Stirs Hope The Queen modelled these features exceptionally well, yet even the greatest leaders in history are only able to have limited impact as their reign inevitably comes to an end. However, central to the Christian faith of the Queen was her hope in a greater monarch than herself - one who has a far more profound and enduring impact. St. Paul points us to Christ the King, the one who left the magnificence of heaven to come down to his people - becoming one of them - and then dying in their place. The consequences of his actions on their behalf are world-shaping, and inspire deep hope and profound unity among us. • Staying Impactful on Mission

    26/06/2022 Duration: 30min

Churches can turn in on themselves becoming inward looking and consumed by what is taking place within the walls. At the conclusion of his letter to Titus, the Apostle Paul sketches the ways that a church can avoid this. According to him, staying impactful on mission requires: translocal ministry support a deep experience of grace As an apostle, Paul is concerned to plant and strengthen healthy churches. He brings in kingdom reinforcements to minister to the churches as they progress in maturity and influence. However, fundamental to this is the need for a deep experience of God's grace, a theme that Paul returns to throughout the letter. God is shaping Foundation Church Belfast to becoming a sending church, raising up those with apostolic, prophetic, evangelistic, shepherding and teaching gifts to minister to churches across Belfast and all Ireland. • Enjoying Healthy Community

    19/06/2022 Duration: 28min

Enjoying Healthy Community To develop and deepen healthy community, it is essential that we are united. In this sermon, we see that the church is to be united for good works and against division. When we share this common unity and passion, a powerful community develops that points onlookers past ourselves and towards Jesus - the one who forms and empowers us as his people. Main Text Titus 3:8-12 Preacher Andrew Wright, member of Foundation Church Belfast Foundation Church Belfast We are a gospel-centred, Spirit-empowered community on mission. • How to Live in the World

    12/06/2022 Duration: 33min

Christians are meant to be the best citizens and co-workers out there. That may be true for some, but not all. It is possible to use good works to boost one's own reputation rather than God's, robbing good works of their own goodness. They simply become a tool to build one's platform. St. Paul points us to the astounding gospel of Jesus as the power for transformation and basis of our actions in the world. Main Text Titus 3:1-8 Preacher David Varney, pastor Foundation Church Belfast

  • Living the Radical Ordinary

    29/05/2022 Duration: 36min

How we interact with one another in the church carries attractional power before the onlooking world. According to St. Paul, the quality of our ordinary relationships beautifies the gospel of Jesus. That elevates the importance of our relational connection.  And a community that is committed to pursuing relational depth and quality becomes radically ordinary. Yes, we're talking about ordinary relationships (older men, older women, younger women, younger men etc.) but if we follow Paul's teaching, our relationships become radically ordinary. • Fake Teachers and How to Deal With Them

    22/05/2022 Duration: 34min

The problem with an absence of good leadership is not no leadership but bad leadership. Before elders were identified and commissioned in the new churches in Crete, fake teachers had crept in to the leadership vacuum, sensing an opportunity to build a stage for themselves. These fake teachers use religious language to manipulate their hearers, yet the result is disunity and weakening of the missional impact of the church. St. Paul outlines the ways we can detect fake teachers and helps us to guard against them and their damaging content. • 3 Life-Changing Headlines from the Resurrection

    17/04/2022

The empty tomb is first discovered by three women. They visited prepared with anointing spices, expecting to find a corpse. What they found changed the course of world history. In this somewhat abrupt ending to Mark's gospel account, we can detect three outstanding phrases that stop us in our tracks: 1. "Jesus of Nazareth" Of all the titles the angel could have referred to Jesus, he chose to identify him as a man from a small town. He was in many ways, just like us. Yet this has dramatic implications for how we view the resurrection, and it's relevance for us. If a human being can come alive after death, then maybe there is hope for us. 2. "And Peter" Peter had failed Jesus miserably, denying him emphatically in public three times. Yet the angel's special inclusion "and Peter" showed that even someone who has radically denied Jesus and rejected him can be restored. That is great news for those of us who think we are too bad or lost for Jesus to take us back. These two words suggest otherwise.

  • Living the Truth

    10/04/2022

As we journey towards the climactic moment of Mark's gospel account - the cross of Christ, we are confronted with the challenges of living God's truth in a world that doesn't want to hear it. Today we are faced with a radical choice - embrace and live out the truth of God, just as Jesus did; or abstract ourselves from the truth and find safety in denial, just like Peter. Our vision at Foundation Church Belfast is to catalyse gospel transformation in our city and nations through resourcing, renewal, and replication. (Read more about our vision here.) But what if that we knew that vision would only come to pass with suffering? Would we still be enthusiastic lay our lives down for the cause of Christ and the coming kingdom across Ireland? This text challenges an unbalanced approach to the mission of the church, but gives us great motivation to serve God radically. In this message we see: The Model of Living the Truth; The Warning of Living the Truth; The Challenge of Living the Truth Main Text
