Doctor Who: Who's He? Podcast

Phil & Paul continue their retrospective of Series 4 and this week they have a crack at The Poison Sky, the final story of the Sontaran two parter. This time they lament the lack of the Brigadier, Phil attempts to be clever with his limited knowledge of physics and Paul is astounded at a sonic screwdriver not being very sonic. And in this weeks news, Doctor Who says goodbye to Upper Boat Studios (this should have been last weeks news but they forgot), the Doctor Who Experience gets an opening date in Cardiff and a release date for Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock.  All this plus Phil tries to pronounce Pobol Y Cwm and fails abysmally while Paul laughs.

In this weeks episode, Phil and Paul continue with their Series 4 retrospective with a look back at The Sontaran Stratagem. The both try really hard this week to be positive and the most part they succeed. However, with a snivelling wretch of a boy genius, the Doctors new found dislike for U.N.I.T., it doesn't take them long to start getting a little picky. But in this weeks news, the announcement that episode 1 of series 7 will be premiered in August and Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill have completed their final scenes, give the two of them plenty to discuss and go off topic about. Paul is back from his holidays feeling refreshed and gets straight back into the swing of things and joins Phil to look at The Planet Of The Ood. Phil finds this one a bit of a slog to review but livens things up for himself by doing a Sid James impression, while Paul concentrates on the plot and the the social messages that this episode was trying to convey. Also, as a special treat, Tony joins Phil and Paul for the news section which was recorded in the pub while celebrating Pauls birthday. However, Tony being Tony, he gets easily distracted and goes hunting for alien lifeforms in a bowl of wasabi peanuts and Phil gets in another impression, this time the Kinder egg advert from the 1980's. Whilst Paul is on his holidays, Phil enlists the help of new friend to the show Stephen Prescott from the rather excellent Mad Man With A Box Podcast to discuss The Fires of Pompeii. During the discussion, Stephen educates Phil on Latin textbooks and they both go wildly off tangent and delve into the merits of RTD versus The Moff and whether longstanding fans requests for classic monsters such as Ice Warriors and Zygons to return to the show would be a good thing. Also in a very short news section, John Barrowman wants Captain Jack to return to Doctor Who and an actress who appeared in Doctor Who over 50 years ago reaches the grand age of 100. Once again the reviewing duo of Phil and Paul embark on another retrospective and this time they turn their attentions to series 4 and Partners In Crime.  What do they make it after all this time? Is it a great series opener or do they think it's a stinker of an episode? Well you might be surprised when you listen to this!! It's that time of the month again when the Who's He? team turn their attentions towards another audio commentary and this month it's Day Of The Daleks. Once again Phil and Paul are joined by Tony for his monthly turn behind the microphone and as usual he lets loose with his little known "facts" on what really went on with the actors and behind the scenes stories that made up the production of this classic Doctor Who story. However, Tony took it upon himself to go through puberty again during the recording of this episode, which Phil and Paul constantly remind him of. Also during the course of the recording, Phil gets misty eyed at the sight of a young Katy Manning and they also introduce what has to be the shortest news section in the history of this podcast.

This is it folks, the end of our 2009 specials retrospective with a look back at The End Of Time Part 2. And this week, Phil & Paul are joined by the excellent Martyn Havell from the Badwilf Podcast. They remain upbeat thoughout this episode and talk about all the good things that this story....I'm sorry, that's a lie, they didn't like it then and they don't like it now. No surprises there then! Well, they do find a couple of nice things to say which usually involves Bernard Cribbins. And in a very slow news week, Phil manages to drive away every listener the podcast has, Paul delivers the truth on what the Doctors voting habits are and how is he half the racist that Postman Pat is. Yes, it's a shocking tabloid style expose that doesn't include the words 'romp' or 'sordid'.

After the highs of last weeks official convention, we hit the lows with The End Of Time Part 1 in the continuation of the 2009 Specials retrospective. Unfortunately this episode contains nothing but Paul and Phil voicing their disappointment and frustration at this very woeful episode of Doctor Who but do find the time to extol the virtues of having Bernard Cribbins to liven things up. They also go off topic and discuss how the Master has been portrayed over the years. And in this weeks news, more series 7 production snippets, the bad smell that is David Yates and the Doctor Who movie and Daleks. Lots of Daleks. All this plus Paul takes over the show as Phil has been moonlighting rather a lot.

Live from Cardiff, it's the Who's He? Podcast's coverage of the official Doctor Who Convention!! Well, ok, it's not live but in Cardiff they were and Phil & Paul attempt to give you a flavour of what it was like to be at the BBC's first stab at a convention since the 1980's. Was it any good? Did they have a good time? Was it worth the £99 ticket price? All these questions are answered in this weeks episode but not only that, Phil & Paul both realise a childhood dream. And there's also this weeks important news of the announcement of the Doctors new companion, when we can say goodbye to Rory and Amy and some old foes of the Doctor make a return in Series 7.

They talk about what they are expecting from next weekends shindig, what they are looking forward to the most and also let slip their evil nefarious plans to rip off the general public and seperate them from their cash, to also con money out the stars and crew of Doctor Who and also asking where they can find a stuffed porpoise. Oh and Phil tries to explain this weeks Series 7 production news without giving away spoilers in the most arduous and long winded way possible.

It's the Who's He? Podcast's first birthday!! And what better way to celebrate than having Phil, Paul and Tony doing an audio commentary on the very first Doctor Who serial An Unearthly Child. However, Phil let's the occasion get the better of him to begin with and messes up the news which this week includes a Doctor Who concert, more series 7 production news and the sad news of another actor connected to Doctor Who passing away. And after a slow start with the commentary, they into their stride and Tony gives some inside information on William Hartnell's on set demands (which could be complete lies) and all three of them do caveman impressions.

This week Phil and Paul travel back in time and give their opinions on the next 2009 Special, The Waters Of Mars. Do they think that it still stands up as the classic that it is purported to be or is it another clunker following on from the Planet Of The Dead? All I will say is that for once, they both agree!! Also, the news this week sheds light on how the production of series 7 is coming along, the casting rumour mill and the sad news of the passing of another Who actor.

The reviewing duo of Phil and Paul press on with the next phase of their retrospective with a look at the first of the 2009 Specials, Planet Of The Dead. This is a most divisive podcast and Paul rather enjoys it and Phil detests it but all this makes Phil wax lyrical about the rich tapestry of the human race but veers dangerously close to one those awful episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation where Data explores what it's like to be human. And in the news this week, series 7 casting news, the end of the Adventure Games and Doctor Who tat.

Right, they're doing Time And The Rani this time. Ok? They're sorry, really sorry. The boys really suffer during this one, finding not much to be happy about but manage to keep their sanity by comparing the story's characters to long forgotten 80's pop groups, Rainbow and reminsicing about chocolate bars from yesteryear. And in the news this week, more guests confirmed for the Doctor Who Convention in March, series 7 production news and fan slash fiction has become legit. All this plus Bonnie Langford screaming.

Tis the season to be jolly!!  Well, not really to be honest but there is a lot of snow on the ground, so it's a good time for Paul and Phil to have a look back at A Christmas Carol, the 2010 Christmas special.  Fortunately after over a year, they both still really enjoy this festive offering and Phil tries to make connections to M.R. James Christmas ghost stories and The Eagle comic while Paul insists that they try their hardest not to pick holes in the story. Meanwhile, in the news, writers and directors are confirmed for series 7, guest news for the Doctor Who convention, some Doctor Who tat and Phil plugs other podcasts.

After starting this months ago, Phil and Paul finally reach the end of their journey with a look at The Big Bang, the finale of series 5. Paul and Phil can't help themselves and start to pick holes in the plot and characters but don't worry folks, they really do love this episode and both agree that this is probably the best series finale ever. Or EVAH as the youth of today like to spell it. And in this weeks news, Doctor Who tat and a fake Matt Smith proposes to his girlfriend. Who wasn't a fake, she's real.

In their never ending quest to get through series 5, Phil and Paul look back at the penultimate episode of this series, The Pandorica Opens. Will they still enjoy this barnstorming episode or has time taken its toll on these two jaded podcasters? Also, in this weeks news, Matt Smith and Karen Gillan triumph at the National Television Awards, toy and DVD news and the latest update to the official Doctor Who Convention that has got Phil and Paul (and a few others besides) a little perplexed. Just don't send them your milk bottle tops.

It's audio commentary time again! This week the lads bring you the second part of their commentary for The Invasion parts 5 to 8. This time they run out of steam as Tony was all facted out and Phil resorts to making sexist comments about women of the sixties (and tries to justify it) whilst Paul keeps a dignified silence. Tony also does something that makes Phil swear which results in the use of a "beep", the first in the history of this podcast.

It's audio commentary time folks! This month the commentary trio of Phil, Paul and Tony tackle the 2nd Doctor story, The Invasion parts 1 to 4. During this audio romp through this classic Patrick Troughton story, the lads discuss such weighty topics as Tobias Vaughn's unhealthy obsession with watching his henchmen on the toilet, Sparky The Magic Piano, action figures of the Queen and Tony's disappointment at animated skirts blowing in the wind. All this plus Doctor Who news from the last week where we also discover Tony's seedy private life.

After last weeks show, the lads are back in their comfort zone with their continuation of their series 5 retrospective and this week it's the turn of The Lodger. However, not all went according to plan as they were beset by technical problems, which made each other think their connection had dropped which lead to a bit of confusion. But once things got back on track, they rattled through but couldn't help but keep making comparisions to Closing Time (well, Phil did anyway) and why discovering Matt Smiths comedic talents in this story was a slippery slope for the programme makers.
