Synopsis

Across over ten years of going to shows, I've met countless fascinating people that are joined together by the fact I love their music. This is a medium in which I look to find out the bigger picture, the extended story and the journey that brought them to where they are. No genre or topic is off limits. I'm David James Young - and all my friends are in bar bands.

  • Episode 129: My Friend Carla Geneve

    31/05/2019 Duration: 29min

One of WA's most promising young upstarts, Carla Geneve forged out her love of music as a young kid in Albany. Persevering through hellish piano lessons, Geneve later discovered the healing powers of Acca Dacca and The Living End. She's long since turned the amp up to 11 and carved her own path in the rock world. Although she's only 20 years old, Geneve has already lapped up considerable national attention for her endearing and honest music. On the eve of the release of her debut EP, we spoke to Carla about her own west-side story. Carla Geneve's debut EP is out on June 7 via Remote Control Records.Pre-order here: https://carlageneve.lnk.to/carla-EP Special thanks to Charlie Ellison, Remote Control Records, The Bank Hotel and Adam Buncher. • Episode 128: My Friends The Magic Numbers

    17/05/2019 Duration: 46min

"This is our music. These are rebel songs. Are you in or out?" Ever since the Stodarts (Romeo and Michelle) crossed paths with the Gannons (Angela and Sean) on the outskirts of London, theirs has always been a unique approach. In the mid-2000s, they generated a buzz to the point that they were able to play three sold-out shows without even releasing any music. Plenty has followed in the intervening years, however, including last year's excellent LP. Outsiders Traversing the worlds of pop and rock with a gleeful, harmonious tinge, The Magic Numbers have always thrived on their own terms and have never compromised their vision for anyone else - a trait to truly be commended in this day and age. In a first, this episode was recorded in Brisbane, on the opening night of The Magic Numbers' first Australian tour in nine years. All four members of the band gathered around to share some stories, tell some "actual facts" and laugh uncontrollably. Are you in or out?Bar Bands Special thanks to John Larney, Footstomp M

  • Episode 127: My Friends Red City Radio

    09/05/2019 Duration: 38min

Red City Radio know they belong to the land, and the land they belong to is grand. As one of Oklahoma City's major musical exports, the band have been taking their barroom-ready take on melodic punk to every last sweaty room that will have them. It's changed a lot since drummer Dallas Tidwell co-founded the band in 2005 - so much so, it's left him as the only original member. For this chat, he's joined by the person with the second-longest tenure - vocalist/guitarist Garrett Dale - and the two talk shop on tour beers, the differences between "Rapper's Delight" and "Gangsta's Paradise" and the moments in the band's history that have made their teen selves proud. Red City Radio tour in the US with Hot Water Music in July and Taking Back Sunday in October. • Episode 126: My Friend Banoffee

    11/04/2019 Duration: 31min

Banoffee is regarded as one of the most forward-thinking and innovative pop/dance songwriters working today. With co-signs from the likes of SOPHIE and Charli XCX, not to mention a string of killer fashion collabs, she holds the captive attention of a global audience. Before all that though, Banoffee was Martha Brown - a part of Melbourne's Two Bright Lakes collective and one third of art-pop outsiders Otouto. It's a unique Venn diagram that few artists truly fit into, and before her headlining show at the Lansdowne Hotel this past March she explained just how she managed to transition between the two. • Episode 125: My Friend George Clarke (Deafheaven)

    28/03/2019 Duration: 40min

As soon as he was drawn to music as a teenager, George Clarke had an eye for the extraordinary, the outlandish and the unabashedly heavy. It would come to reflect in the music that he made himself, most notably coming to fruition in the form of Deafheaven. Four albums deep, the Grammy-nominated band are one of metal's most divisive and engaging acts - and they've never compromised their vision for anyone or anything. So, how did this awkward Californian kid become one of his genre's most confident and alluring frontmen? Before a show at Sydney's Manning Bar, Clarke spoke candidly and extensively on Deafheaven's rise to the top. With thanks to Dan Stork, Cat Clarke, Cooking Vinyl Australia and Adam Buncher. • Episode 124: My Friends Antonia Susan (The Lazy Susans) and Lande Hekt (Muncie Girls)

    21/03/2019 Duration: 34min

Although they grew up at different times in two different parts of the world, Antonia Susan and Lande Hekt have a lot more in common than you'd think. They both latched onto music young, they bashed about in their teenage years and they found a wider audience for their emotive and honest take on indie rock in their 20s. From the misty Blue Mountains to the countryside of Exeter, Tones and Lande have plenty of stories to share of how music has impacted on their lives - and prior to a show together at Crowbar Sydney, they shared them together. Thank you to Adam Buncher and to Ben David for their assistance on this episode. The Lazy Susans' "R U OK?" • Episode 123: My Friend Joe Talbot (IDLES)

    07/03/2019 Duration: 33min

Most guests of the podcast spend ages traversing different bands before they land on The One. For Joe Talbot, all he has ever known as a vocalist, songwriter and performer has been IDLES since they first formed back in 2009. His perseverance with the band has come to pay off with major dividends, as the Bristol-based band rose to major indie stardom in 2018 with their critically-adored second album, Joy As An Act Of Resistance. In a candid chat in the Gallery Bar of Sydney's Oxford Art Factory - while the rest of his bandmates learn how to play Streets songs - Talbot explains his initial love of music, the rise and fall of UK indie and what one learns from relentless touring. A huge thank-you to Bree Wilkinson at Inertia Music and to Adam Buncher for their assistance on this episode. • Episode 122: My Friend Phoebe Bridgers

    22/02/2019 Duration: 26min

Growing up on the outskirts of LA, Phoebe Bridgers never had a specific moment where she decided to become a musician - truth be told, it was second nature. It wasn't long after Bridgers picked up a guitar that she was performing around town to an ever-increasing audience, eventually landing her slots on the road with everyone from Julien Baker to the Violent Femmes. She's been winning hearts and drawing out tears from her audience ever since, not only with her remarkable 2017 debut but also her collaborative EP as a part of Boygenius in 2018. With a brief moment of downtime on her first-ever Australian tour, Bridgers gave a quick guided tour through her musical endeavours, past and present. NB: There is no mention or discussion of the New York Times article Phoebe was quoted in during this podcast. This was recorded the day before the article was published. • Episode 121: My Friends The Beths

    14/02/2019 Duration: 34min

Outside of the land of the long white cloud, The Beths were somewhat of a well-kept secret up until about this time last year. With the release of their debut album, Future Me Hates Me, the Auckland band became an international commodity and one of the quickest rising indie-rock bands of 2018. They now have support slots with the likes of Death Cab for Cutie and Bloc Party under their belts, not to mention a string of sold-out gigs both at home and across the pond. Before all of that, though, Liz Stokes and Jonathan Pierce were just awkward indie kids trying to figure out where they fit in. They tell stories from all across their still-blossoming career here, before taking to the stage at the Lansdowne in Sydney. The Beths are touring nationally in March and April, playing theatre shows with The Smith Street Band and headliner club shows with Jess Locke. • Episode 120: My Friends Polish Club

    31/01/2019 Duration: 36min

David Novak and John-Henry Pajak are Polish Club. They're born entertainers, leather-jacket-cool rockstars and purveyors of hip-swinging, soulful garage rock. They've also served time in punk bands (contrary to Daniel Johns' opinion), smashed more McNuggets than they'd care to mention and travelled extensively to perform for a whole slew of punters along the way. Today's chat is loose, highly informal and occasionally explicit. It's also funny and insightful, as one would expect from two such characters as Novak and JH. So, get around these recent Hottest 100 entrants and get some clarity. • Episode 119: My Friends The Bronx

    27/12/2018 Duration: 45min

The Bronx arrived on the scene some 15 years ago, all hardcore punk ethics and rock & roll showmanship. Through everything, they're still here and still raising hell on a global scale. Five albums deep - eight if you count their Mariachi El Bronx records - the Los Angeles band have a storied history that has traversed house shows, international festivals and the hallowed halls of the Ed Sullivan Theater. Before a killer show at Sydney's Metro Theatre this past October, vocalist Matt Caughtthran and guitarist Joby Ford shared a highlight reel from their lives as perennial underdogs that have found themselves winning time and time again. The Bronx's discography can be found at their Bandcamp page: https://thebronx.bandcamp.com/ Our thanks to Cat Clarke at Cooking Vinyl and the invincible Boo Johnston for their assistance in making this happen. • Episode 118: My Friend Cadien James (Twin Peaks)

    07/12/2018 Duration: 26min

Born out of house shows and boredom, Chicago jangle merchants Twin Peaks have provided damn good tunes to the masses since their late-teens formation. Their years in the trenches as a DIY touring band eventually landed them spots on festivals and tours around the globe - in this instance, bringing them all the way over to Australia to support Skegss on a national tour. Prior to their fourth and final show at the Metro in Sydney, the band's de-facto leader Cadien James powered through a mix of stories that piece together to make the Lynchian utopia seen before you. • Episode 117: My Friend Josh Earl

    29/11/2018 Duration: 35min

Is this a crossover episode? Well, kind of. Josh Earl is best known as a stand-up comedian and the host of the incredibly funny quiz-show podcast If you've ever seen Earl perform, though, you'll know he's got history as a musician as well. Having released several EPs, collaborated with fellow Tasmanian comic Justin “The Bedroom Philosopher” Heazlewood and written a particularly-beloved song about the Women's Weekly cake book, Earl has a love of music that runs in his blood – and probably through his funnybone too. While running a DYKWIA? residency at the Catfish in Fitzroy, Earl tells stories from formative years in the Apple Isle to his time touring through the mainland and everything in-between.Don't You Know Who I Am? • Episode 116: My Friend Darling James

    15/11/2018 Duration: 47min

James O'Brien is Darling James. Before that, he was Jamezboat – bassist, vocalist and songwriter in Brisbane indie darlings The Boat People. Going back even further, O'Brien was a rural Queensland kid that chanced upon a love of music and never looked back. The multi-instrumentalist has played with Kate Miller-Heidke, toured the world and been through the ringer both in a band and as a solo artist. Just after soundcheck at Waywards in Newtown, James gets into the finer points of classical music training, DIY touring and reinventing yourself as a one-man band. Whether you know every word to every song or you're still trying to figure out if it's double G or double S at the end, Skegss have been more or less inescapable in the last 18 months and change. Their cult fanbase has poured over into the mainstream, filling out venues across the country and scoring high rotation on triple j. • Episode 114: My Friends Pagan

    26/10/2018 Duration: 34min

Melbourne band Pagan aren't concerned with round holes and square pegs – they're too busy trying to kick the door down and rip down the foundations. The genre-defiant quartet dropped their debut album, Black Wash, earlier in the year to much fanfare – although they've had quite the run-up to its release, and it's far from their first rodeo. Vocalist Nikki Brumen and bassist Dan Bonnici share a lot of history together, and over some beers at Young Henry's in Enmore they divulge basically all of it for your listening pleasure. Pagan play The Grace Darling in Melbourne on November 5 with In Trenches and Year Of The Rat. • Episode 112: My Friend Tim Commandeur (Operator Please, PNAU, Tkay Maidza)

    27/09/2018 Duration: 34min

When we first met Tim Commandeur, he was better known as Timmy. The baby-faced drummer was still in high school when he joined Operator Please, and by the time they'd graduated they'd become one of the biggest names in Australian indie. Those days are long gone, but Tim is able to look back on them fondly while still forging ahead as one of the country's most active drummers. Pounding the skins for both Tkay Maidza and PNAU, Commandeur still plays to massive audiences all over the place - and he's never lost his love for the instrument. With a bit of brief downtime between tours, Tim spoke openly and honestly about his time as a teen sensation, his solo work and performing to crowds the world over. • Episode 111: My Friends Tiny Moving Parts

    06/09/2018 Duration: 37min

Tiny Moving Parts have been keeping it all in the family since well before they formed - they're made up of two brothers and a cousin, after all. Coming out of a sleepy town in Minnesota, the band has always dared to be different, mixing their love of emo and pop-punk with a dizzying, mathy approach to instrumentation. It's seen them quickly outgrow the basements they once thrived in, eventually ascending to international acclaim and sold-out tours everywhere they travel. They take none of it for granted, of course - to them, they're still the blink-loving kids just playing for fun that they were when they first started jamming in one another's garages. Ahead of a packed Manning Bar show with Luca Brasi, vocalist/guitarist Dylan Matthiesen and drummer Bill Chevalier share stories of everything from idolising Travis Barker to Fargo tourist attractions as they tell the TMP story as they know it. Tiny Moving Parts' latest album, Swell, is out now.Stream, download and purchase the album here: https://tinymovingpa
