Synopsis

Across over ten years of going to shows, I've met countless fascinating people that are joined together by the fact I love their music. 30/08/2018 Duration: 17min

What can you say about this week's guest that hasn't already been said? Andrew W.K. is more than just a hard partyer - he's a prodigious multi-instrumentalist, motivational speaker and world record holder. He is a phenomena that has overcome every obstacle and lived to tell the tale - and for 15 glorious minutes, we held court with the great man before his show at the Manning Bar in Sydney. It's not a long time, but it's a damn good time. • Episode 109: My Friend Marihuzka Cornelius (Bloods)

    17/08/2018 Duration: 32min

They call her MC. She's a singer, guitarist, kickass mum and the leader of Sydney's resident garage-rock sweetheart gang Bloods. The band was born out of a desire to do new things, as three mates all switched instruments to see what would happen. It was far from MC's first rodeo, though - across nearly 20 years in the game she's toured all over Australia and played with some of her teenage idols across a variety of projects. With Bloods' new album dropping, we pulled up some stools at The Forresters in Surry Hills to make sense of it all - from high-school band comps to antipodean Sub Pop signees. Bloods' new album Feelings is out now.Stream, download and purchase the album here: http://bloods.bandcamp.com Bloods play a Girls Rock! fundraiser this Saturday at Beatdisc Records and have album launch dates this December.Head to www.facebook.com/bloodsband for more info. Before a packed-out show at Sydney's Chippo Hotel, the rhythm section convened in a nearby park to talk about their unexpected background and the current wave of momentum they're riding. • Episode 105: My Friend Rob Mills

    21/06/2018 Duration: 33min

Fifteen years ago, Australia was introduced to a cheeky Melbourne-born singer with a true-blue nickname and dimples out the wazoo. Rob Mills - or Millsy, as he's better known - was a breakout star of Australian Idol in its first season, arriving at it after years of slugging it out in pubs and singing to anyone who would listen. In 2018, Mills still keeps as busy as he ever has. Though he's gotten out of the pop game, he's an active theatre performer and current Neighbours supervillain. Presently starring in Puffs, the barely-legal play concerning the universe of a particular boy wizard, this chat takes place in the foyer of the Alex Theatre in St. Kilda. Millsy bares all on his inspiration, his reinvention and his traversing of mediums. Falling short of his one night in Paris, it's a tell-all.Puffs is running at the Alex Theatre in St. Kilda until July 9. In space, no-one can hear you scream. In Musswellbrook, they can hear you sing - they just don't care. From a small town in the Upper Hunter region of New South Wales, Eat Your Heart Out didn't set out with any lofty ambitions. Today, they stand as one of the country's top pop-punk exports - and they haven't even dropped their debut album yet. Gathered around a conference table at Universal in Sydney, the five-piece gave some back-story to their brief but eventful run as a band.Eat Your Heart Out's "Mind Games" EP is out now. 31/05/2018 Duration: 30min

Raised on a diet of Queen and Nirvana in a small northern English town, the Jarman brothers - Ryan, Gary and Ross - knew they'd end up making music. What they could have never anticipated, however, is how far it would take them. From sleeping in vans to playing the main stages of the biggest festivals in the world, The Cribs have rolled with the punches for well over a decade - and they're not done yet. On their first tour of Australia in five years, the Jarmans locked in a half-hour of power to dissect the Wakefield punk scene, how The Sleepy Jackson kicked off their career and why you should never leash your dog to a power generator. • Episode 98: My Friend Gordi

    05/04/2018 Duration: 40min

Born Sophie Payten, Gordi was a wide-eyed kid falling in love with music out in country New South Wales on her family farm. After being particularly inspired by a Missy Higgins show in her teens, she focused her attention on songwriting - first a folksy dreamer, then a maximalist indie-pop maestro. Her debut LP, Reservoir, was released to critical acclaim in 2017 and lead to huge tours both nationally and internationally. In late November, Gordi played a sold-out show at Sydney's Oxford Art Factory. Just after her soundcheck, however, she took some time to map out her story from out in Coutawindra to the bright lights of New York City. Gordi's debut album, Reservoir, is out now. It can be streamed, purchased and downloaded here: http://gordi.bandcamp.com/album/reservoir Gordi will be on tour in support of Missy Higgins this May across Australia. Born in Perth, raised in Singapore before moving to London and then back to Australia, Stefan Niedermeyer - AKA Evan Klar - has seen more of the world in his formative years than most will see in their lifetime. Before coming to the realm of solo performance, Niedermeyer was a session musician. It lead to cushy gigs and tours, but something greater was inevitably on the horizon. For a Bar Bands first, David speaks to a man that he's never met and never heard the music of - just to see what may come of it. The answer may surprise you. Evan Klar's debut album, Deepest Creatures, is out now. Catch Evan on tour, both headlining and in support of The Jungle Giants, throughout March and April. • Episode 96: My Friends Hockey Dad

    08/02/2018 Duration: 48min

It's a long road from Computer Town Australia to an Airbnb in Los Angeles, but in just under six years Hockey Dad have blazed the trail there and back again. Billy Fleming and Zach Stephenson have known one another since they were kids, growing up on the same street in the southern suburbs of Wollongong. They formed Hockey Dad on a whim in 2012, and the years since have seen them steadily build up a profile as one of the country's hardest-touring and most fun to watch bands. Rolling darts out in the gutter of Young Henry's in Newtown before playing with Grinspoon (as you do), the duo talked about their evolution from grommits to headliners and all the adventures that have come with it. 22/12/2017 Duration: 55min

They started out as Andrew Jackson Jihad in 2004 - two friends in Arizona, taking on the weird and wonderful world of folk-punk. In the ensuing years, vocalist/guitarist Sean Bonnette and bassist Ben Gallaty have created some cult-classic LPs, toured the world and found themselves in a variety of peculiar situations. While in Australia on a headlining tour, the duo warmed up for their Newcastle date by telling stories about everything from Fieldy from Korn's solo album right up to playing in the back of a bikie bar. AJJ's latest releases are the rarities compilation "only God can judge me and more," the 2017 EP "Back in the Jazz Coffin" and their 2016 LP "The Bible 2." • Episode 94: My Friend Lauren Denitzio (Worriers/The Measure [SA])

    22/12/2017 Duration: 47min

Growing up as an awkward music nerd in New Jersey, Lauren Denitzio never saw themselves fronting a band or playing punk rock. In 2017, they've done it twice - first as part of the crucially-underrated outfit The Measure [SA], whose album Notes was twice as good as most punk albums released in the 2010s and got half the recognition. In their second act, Worriers, Denitzio has further explored the semantics of the genre. With a slew of friends along for the ride, Denitzio has turned Worriers into something fearless, fun and fiery. Three chords and the truth has never sounded better. In September, Denitzio toured Australia for the very first time. Before a show at the Red Rattler in Sydney, they explained the key differences between basement shows and proper gigs, the freedom of a musical collective and being a polite punk. Worriers' third album, Survival Pop, is out now via Sideonedummy/Cooking Vinyl. You can stream, download and purchase the album here: http://worriers.bandcamp.com/album/survival-pop/ Follow La
