  • JEREMY SMITH'S SEVEN DEADLY SINS: 1. Pride

    19/01/2017

After two years presenting Strange Fruit with Neil Nixon, I've decided to move on and do something a bit different. My first idea was to sing into the microphone myself for an hour but unfortunately, the Health and Safety Executive found that this might be detrimental to public health. I've therefore decided to put together a septology of music shows based on the Seven Deadly Sins. This isn't quite a unique concept because it's already been done in writing by Dan Savage with his rather brilliant book, “Skipping Towards Gomorrah: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Pursuit of Happiness in America” and of course also by the 1995 movie, “Seven”. However, it may well be the first radio show to focus on the Seven Deadly Sins: Pride, Greed, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Wrath and Sloth as content and I must say, I'm particularly looking forward to Lust and Gluttony. These seven programmes will be coming out on Gonzo multi-media over the next few weeks, while I think of what I'm going to do next. Any cool ideas will be grat

  • Canterbury Sans Frontieres #41

    20/12/2016

CANTERBURY SANS FRONTIÈRES: Episode Forty-one We at Gonzo Web Radio are very proud to bring you Canterbury Sans Frontières - a podcast dedicated to the music of the 'Canterbury Scene' and more. Creator Matthew Watkins writes: As with Canterbury Soundwaves , a new three-hour episode will be released with each full moon. I decided to wind down Canterbury Soundwaves so that I didn't end up (i) repeating myself, (ii) scraping the bottom of the Canterbury barrel, or (iii) becoming increasingly tangential. This new podcast broadens the musical remit, so it'll be about one-third 'Canterbury sound', together with progressive/psychedelic/experimental music from the Canterbury of today, the remainder being a mix of music from various times and places which I feel to be in a similar spirit of creative adventurousness. I'll be doing a lot less talking, and the programme will be less expository – so no interviews, barely listenable bootlegs, etc. I also plan to include guest one-hour mixes from various musicians f

  • GONZO WEEKLY #209: The new Pink Fairies album - track by track

    17/11/2016

I still remember the first time that I heard of The Pink Fairies. It was from an extremely unlikely source; my late Father. Some time in early 1974 I had been given a copy of Dark Side of the Moon by a relative, and as was often his custom, my Father found fault with it. It wasn't the swearing, the creepy between-song chatter or even the mental health references, but he found the line “hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way” offensive, for some reason, but most of all he found the name Pink Floyd to be disturbing. “Calling themselves 'pink' they must be poofters” he said. And I who neither knew, or cared, about the sexuality of the band had nothing with which to reply. Then, whichever of the Sunday colour supplements we got for my Grandmother, ran a shock expose thingy on the alternative culture. We were sitting in what my Mother called 'the drawing room' and my elder relatives were reading the Sunday newspaper, whilst my little brother was playing on the floor and I was doing my best to pretend

  • GONZO WEEKLY #203: Jon meets Martin Springett

    07/10/2016

I recently saw the entry an old schoolfriend had made on 'Friends Reunited'. Under 'Music' he wrote: "I think that anything released since the beginning of the eighties is shit" and I thought that this was such an appaling thing to say that I decided not to bother renewing our friendship. The fact that the boy who taught me to roll spliffs and introduced me to Joy Division is now a senior policeman also had something to do with it. Because one of the things that I like about my job, indeed my life, is that I am constantly being introduced to new artists, authors and musicians. One day a few months ago Rob Ayling copied me into an email exchange with a bloke called Martin in Toronto. It turned out that he is a musician and a visual artist of rare prowess. I asked for more information and both Rob and Martin pointed me towards his website: "Martin Springett was born in Crayford, Kent, England, in 1947. He studied art (that is he learned to play the Guitar) for two semesters at the Brassey School of Art in Has
