The wrestling season has officially arrived as the University of Maryland wrestling team opened up practice on October 10. On Episode 17 of the Maryland Mat Chat, head coach Kerry McCoy will break down the first day of practice, analyze the schedule and talk a little bit about the lineup that will be on the mats in College Park this season. Coach McCoy is eyeing several key home duals this season as the Terps welcome a hearty Big Ten schedule as well as non-conference duals against regional rivals and a Valentine's Day Beauty and the Beast Dual. We also break down the new hires to the staff as alum Frank Goodwin has come on board and will work with the Terrapin Wrestling Club while Ganbayar Sanjaa comes back to the east coast after a coaching stint at Oklahoma. Hemida become Mamaroneck's first state champion in school history when he captured the 220-pound state championship in 2014. A two-time All-American in freestyle in Fargo, Hemida talks about his ascension up the ranks and why he chose Maryland over Pittsburgh and Minnesota. Hemida, just 17, plans to redshirt and pack on some more pounds to get ready for the size and strength of Division I heavyweights. Standing tall over his opposition is common, but come wrestling season, he'll be the shorter wrestler on the mat when he spars with teammate Dawson Peck. Episode 14 of the Maryland Mat Chat looks to the future as we talk with one of the standouts from the incoming recruiting class, New Jersey's Josh Ugalde. Nationally-ranked for most of his final two years in high school at Bound Brook, Ugalde was a three-time state-placewinner in the rugged one-class system in the Garden State. He finished his career with an impressive 140 wins and two runner-up finishes at the state championships. At 170 pounds, Ugalde will likely start his Terp career as a 165-pounder and work with two-time All-American and assistant coach Josh Asper to become battle-ready. Ugalde talks about his plans for Maryland, how he's got a chip on his shoulder heading into Division I wrestling and feels like he's got something to prove. To call Kevin Kearns a "longtime" contributor and coach with Maryland wrestling would be an understatement. Kearns, who started his wrestling career in 1966 with the Terps, is approaching his 40th year on staff in College Park. Kearns tells us about his tour of duty in Vietnam, training with the Iron Sheik in Minnesota, meeting Bob Hope and owning a restaurant in Delaware where one of his patrons was future Vice President Joe Biden. Three-time All-American Hudson Taylor has been active the last several years with Athlete Ally, a non-profit organization aimed at providing public awareness to foster inclusive sports communities. Geoffrey Alexander, Lou Mascola and Spencer Myers all competed at the 2015 NCAA Division I Championships. Mascola went 2-2, knocking off No. 5 Cody Pack of South Dakota State along the way, while Myers picked up the first round's biggest win, a win over No. 3 Bobby Telford of Iowa. On Episode 7 of the Maryland Mat Chat, we visit with 2011 All-American Spencer Myers, a two-sport athlete at the University of Maryland. Myers became the first true freshman in Maryland wrestling history to earn All-American honors back in 2011 at 285 pounds. Since, Myers has redshirted and made two more trips to the national championships. This season, Myers changed things up a bit, opting to play football for the Terps during the fall and joining the wrestling program for his senior season at mid-year. Myers talks about the training and the competitive balance between the two sports and why he jumped finally decided to take the leap on to the gridiron. Myers is looking to try to play football after his wrestling career is over, and if that doesn't work out, you might see him in that other realm of wrestling, in the WWE. On Episode 6 of the Maryland Mat Chat we talk with two-time All-American and current assistant coach Josh Asper. Asper came to the University of Maryland after graduating from high school in 2008. His high school wrestling career saw him compete in three sports and in wrestling, he won four high school state championships. Following graduation, Asper took one final shot at the USA Wrestling Junior Nationals. He would wrestle on the raised stage and finish as the national runner-up. Asper talked about how he came to the school and talked about his career as a two-time All-American and a three-time participant in the NWCA All-Star Classic. Asper breaks down what it's like now to be on the coaching staff with many of the athletes who were his teammates just two years ago. It's a new year, but the goal still remains the same for coach Kerry McCoy and the Maryland Terrapins. On Episode 5 of the Maryland Mat Chat, coach McCoy looks back at the 52nd annual Midlands Championships held at Northwestern University on December 29-30. We'll talk about the individual performances in Evanston as well as some notable placements by redshirts at the Wilkes Open and the F&M Open. The Terps have two big home dates set on the weekend as they welcome Harvard on Friday, January 9 at 7 p.m. in the first Beauty and the Beast. The combined event will showcase wrestling and women's gymnastics simultaneously. The women's gymnastics team will face West Virginia and George Washington. On Sunday, it's double-time for the Terps as they host rival Navy at 3 p.m. before McCoy and team battles Lehigh, a school he previously served as an assistant coach. He went to Arizona State to work with the legendary Sunkist Kids wrestling program and focus his energy on freestyle wrestling. It ultimately paid off as Eiter represented the U.S. at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. / / Eiter's first path in coaching began at Clarion, then he went to the Big Ten and coached at Northwestern before moving east to join Zeke Jones' staff at Penn.
