Synopsis
Atrial fibrillation, also known as AFib, is an irregular sustained heartbeat caused by a quivering of the upper chambers of the heart, called the atria. It is the most common serious heart arrhythmia, and affects more than 2.3 million people nationwide. The most serious complication of AFib is stroke. In fact, AFib patients are nearly five times more likely to suffer a stroke than those without the condition. There are strategies to help reduce the risk of AFib-related stroke. With the support of healthcare professionals and family and friends, people with AFib can strive to maximize their health. Throughout this series, Amy Jensen, director of education for National Stroke Association, will be talking to healthcare professionals, loved ones of people with AFib, patient advocacy groups and patients themselves to get these tips, discussions and insights about how to collaborate with healthcare professionals to help reduce the risk of AFib-related stroke.
