Synopsis

Here on the Large Marge Sent Us podcast, Sweety and Sweetie are our names and nostalgia is our game! Once a week (or more if you're lucky!) we watch movies from the 80s and 90s that shaped our childhoods and then have a sisterly chat about them. We usually sing songs and there's about a 100% chance we'll crack up with bouts of laughter. We hope you will too! So come join us and step back into a time when life was good and the movies were even better Logo created lovingly by Frankie Donlon.Follow us on Twitter @TheSweetieClub and on Facebook!

Episodes

  • Episode 69: Ghostbusters 2

    19/07/2017 Duration: 01h03min

Guys, we've reached a true turning point for the Large Marge Sent Us podcast. We're covering our first sequel and we couldn't be happier about it! Released in 1989, Ghostbusters 2 proton packed itself into the Sweetie mindset quite early, and while far inferior to Ghostbusters, it still has us rolling in the aisles and loving all the cool ghosty stuff that enchanted us from the first film.  Set 5 years after the first film, we're back to NYC, where the Ghostbuster's are down on their luck in a world without a whole lotta ghosts until Vigo the Carpathian comes alive and wants to become a man baby by stealing the soul of poor Dana Barrett's baby. Join us as we talk about what makes a good sequel, how we really sort of hate Dana Barrett, why old fashioned baby carriages are nobody's friend, and if the fan theory that Oscar is the love child of Vinze Clortho and Zuul's, holds water. Plus amazing renditions of Bobby Brown's jam from the soundtrack and Jackie Wilson's iconic, "Higher and Higher"!  Theme song perfor

  • Episode 68: Spaceballs

    12/07/2017 Duration: 01h03min

The fans have spoken (hey Markus!) and they requested we do a Mel Brooks film! Coincidentally we've been wanting to watch Spaceballs, a movie that the Sweeties saw perhaps before even the main movie that it spoofs, Stars Wars! What came first, the parody or the parodied? We have zero critiques for this movie and basically just had a blast reliving all of our favorite scenes and lines, waxing on endlessly for our love of Rick Moranis, playing another round of Bill Pullman or Bill Paxton (RIP) and gushing over the brilliance that is Mel Brooks in all his glory.  Come for the Dark Helmet impressions and leave with some great trivia tidbits about how the movie got its name (balls!) and how invested George Lucas was in the whole project.  May the Schwartz be with you! • Episode 67: Grease

    07/07/2017 Duration: 01h14min

BEST DAY EVER WE DID ANOTHER MUSICAL! The Sweetie's love to sing and what better way to show off our less than professional singing abilities than a trip down T-bird and Pink Lady Lane by doing Grease! We loved this movie hard as little kids (wayyyy before the Grease Mega Mix came out - thank you) though realized today that we didn't totally know all of the lyrics to the songs! Whoops.  Join us as we tackle all the important topics such as: the somewhat horrible message that you need to dress like a slut for your bf to truly love you, who is our favorite T-Bird and Pink Lady, why Rizzo is so damn cool but has got some issues, all of the many Sweetie confusion about all the many sexual innuendos that flew way over our tiny heads, and why whoever decided the drivel that is the song "Sandy" needed to be added to the soundtrack should be fired.  Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. • Episode 66: Innerspace

    04/07/2017 Duration: 01h14min

Innerspace was released 30 years ago on July 1st of 1987. So to celebrate, we've joined forces with the Damage Control Podcast to bring you a rousing new episode!! Join the Sweeties as we record our first episode whilst in different locations! We'll recall how Innerspace first introduced Sweetie to the harmonious tones of Sam Cooke by getting her confused about 'the chicken slacks'. We'll stroll down memory lane and reminisce how we were scarred for life after seeing Mr. Igoe get digested, and then talk about scientific things that we have no idea about. When you're finished listening to our episode, head on over to the Damage Control Podcast and see how what those fellas think!  Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. Logo designed by Frankie Donlon. • Episode 65: A League of Their Own

    25/06/2017 Duration: 01h13min

Move over Field of Dreams.....A League of Their Own is the best damn baseball movie EVER. We'll bet all of our Rockford Peach baseball cards! ALoTO, from 1992 and directed by Penny Marshall chronicles the history of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League, a time from 1943 to 1954 when WOMEN played BASEBALL professionally because all of the men were at war! This movie will make you laugh, cry, hug your sister, and reminds you how awesome Tom Hanks and Gena Davis are.  We've seen this movie 1000 times with (or without sound) and love it so. Come on and listen to us do fine renditions of "We're the members of the All American League..." and "This Used to be Be My Playground", discuss if Dottie dropped the ball on purpose or just had a really bad day, which Rockford Peach we like the most, and how the big band soundtrack and women kicking baseball butt in several montages gives us the internal goosebumps just like when we saw Wonder Woman! PS We kept calling the pitcher Ellen Sue, Sue Ellen because w

  • Episode 64: Men in Black

    19/06/2017 Duration: 01h08min

If you didn't think Will Smith was the coolest thing EVER in 1997, then you can just leave right now. Men in Black represents a key point of the Will Smith action comedy oeuvre, right next to Independence Day and Wild Wild West.  We saw this movie multiple times in the movie theaters when it came out and worshipped Will Smith in all his jumpsuited glory (hey he was even Sweety's fake boyfriend for a couple years!). Bear with us as our synopsis goes off the rails a little bit, but stay for the in depth discussion of the creepiness of Vincent D'Onofrio, our forever love for Tommy Lee Jones, the MIB tag game Sweety came up with for her gym class, and Sweetie's many warblings of the Men in Black theme song.    Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. • Bonus Episode: Legends of the Hidden Temple!

    16/06/2017 Duration: 31min

Alright Silver Snakes, it's time to grab those jungle vines, swing across a big pool of dry ice induced fog, and earn the right to scamper through LEGENDS OF THE HIDDEN TEMPLE. Airing from 1992 to 1994 on Nickelodeon, Legends of the Hidden Temple was the show for you if you could master a cargo net, had good listening comprehension skills when a giant rock sculpture told you a boring ass story about a lost Mesopotamian artifact AND if you didn't pee your pants when a temple guard jumps out of a dark corner! Join us as we discuss how drunk the host must have been to film 200 of these bad boys over 2 years, how shitty the prizes were (Hush Puppies, AGAIN!?), and how most of the boy contestants seemed jerky and probably have ghosted 25 girls on Tinder by now.  Don't forget your life pendants ....it's time to relive Legends!  Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. • Episode 63: Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead

    14/06/2017 Duration: 01h03min

After two botched attempts back in November, we're FINALLY re-recording our Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's episode. Rejoice!!! This flick was a family classic that we'd watch every time it came on TV and although it gave us false hopes about how our adulthood would turn out, it still made us appreciate so much. It taught us important life lessons like, how to do QED reports (make your nice friend do them!), how to send a fax (wait for that same nice friend and then copy her!) all while jamming to some amazing soundtrack work. Join us as we discuss these lessons plus other important things like Brian's 'classic wedge cap' and how delightful Katrina is at whipping up excitement in her boots. We're right on top of that Rose! • Episode 62: Coming to America

    10/06/2017 Duration: 54min

Sexual Chocolate. SEXUAL CHOCOLATE! Tonight we watched one of Sweetie's favorite comedies---Coming to America! Starring Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall in about 5 roles apiece. Join us as we discuss the finer points of 80s fashion (Scrunchies AKA 'Bouffies (sp?)), how awesome McDonald's used to be and hear us do our very best Randy Watson impressions. We'll also relive Sweetie's worst job of all time. Trust us, you don't want to miss that.    Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. Logo designed by Frankie Donlon. • Episode 61: Poltergeist

    05/06/2017 Duration: 01h14min

They're here! The Sweeties are back and watching the first scary movie that ever truly spoke to us as children. Poltergeist scarred us for life when it brought us traumatic scenes like men peeling their faces off, scary AF clown dolls coming alive to strangle us, and grotesque skeletons swimming in a muddy pool. As adults we've come to love the movie and all of its Craig T. Nelson and Jo-Beth Williams glory and we'll never forget it. So join us as we: discuss our various theories on what exactly the 'other side' looks like, share our favorite lines we like to use in everyday situations AND lament Stephen's mansplaining and poor decision making. Do NOT go into the light you guys. Unless the light is listening to this episode in which case...RUN TO THE LIGHT BABY! Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. Logo designed by Frankie Donlon. • Episode 60: Groundhog Day

    29/05/2017 Duration: 54min

Disney once again thwarted our podcasting plans and wouldn't let us easily rent and stream Sleeping Beauty, so we watched Groundhog Day instead! As far plan B's go, Groundhog Day is the bees knees. Starring the beloved Bill Murray, Groundhog Day taught us many valuable lessons including but not limited to: How to easily rob an armored bank truck, Sweet Vermouth is gross, and that you should never get in the shower and then turn on the faucet. We'll discuss how the Phil Connors Suicide reel terrified us as kids, how Phil Connors is pretty much just a regular Joe in today's sarcastic and selfish world of 2016, AND we'll get into some pretty crazy conspiracy theories revolving around Ned Ryerson and whether or not he was a con man OR perhaps stuck in his own time loop!  Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. • Episode 59: Drop Dead Fred

    26/05/2017 Duration: 56min

This week the Sweeties are covering part gross out comedy/part study on psychological well-being---Drop Dead Fred! This movie intrigued us as kids but confuses us as adults. Who is it for? WAS Fred in her imagination and conjured up due to her loneliness and abandonment issues? OR was he a real concept but just invisible to everyone but Lizzie. Who knows! Although we are eternally confused, we can still find things to get excited about.  So join us as we discuss the mysterious disappearance of Bridget Fonda, how stenography keyboards work and hear a full history of Sweety's imaginary friends (the written record of which is now lost because Sweetie threw out the diary in a massive cleaning frenzy!)  Follow us on Twitter @TheSweetieClub and on Instagram @LargeMargeSentUs Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. • Episode 58: Mary Poppins

    20/05/2017 Duration: 01h12min

It's Emily's/Sweetie's birthday and we're celebrating by watching her favorite movie of ALL time....Mary Poppins! Join us as we sing every song in the movie, discuss the eternal confusion of Mary and Bert's relationship status, and lament about how many freaking versions of the Bank song there needs to be. We'll also get sad about Julie Andrew's damaged singing voice, and discuss some possible sexual innuendos involving a cane and an umbrella. • Bonus Episode: Supermarket Sweep!

    11/05/2017 Duration: 28min

In the 90s, a time of economic prosperity and a budget surplus, was there a better game show out there than Supermarket Sweep? Couples with a better than average knowledge of how much a box of Bisquick costs would vie for the chance to race around a fake grocery store and pile their carts high with Pampers, hams, and expensive hair dye all in the hopes that their cart would be the most expensive so that they could go for the big $5,000 grand prize.  Maybe it was our secret dream of being grocery check out girls but the Sweeties loved this show! We watched a few episodes the other day and boy it has not lost its luster! Tune in as we chat about the peppier than usual host, what we determined  to be the best strategies, and how we have long term goals to create epic Supermarket Sweep Halloween costumes.  Somehow we also launched into a sing-along of the Gummi Bears theme song. • Episode 57: The Empire Strikes Back

    09/05/2017 Duration: 52min

In  honor of Star Wars Day, we watched The Empire Strikes Back and then ran around the Dagobah System with a tiny 800 year old Yoda on our back. Honestly, is there any other way to celebrate? Join us as we discuss how our least favorite of the films (we were kids cut us some slack....swampy training sessions...snoozeville!) became one of our favorites in adulthood (Yoda, we HEAR YOU now in our old age). How the giant snow yeti scared the crap out of us, and how we still think Billy Dee Williams waved to us specifically at a parade even though there were hundreds of people there. May the force be with you (and also with you) (oops, wrong religion)! Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. Logo designed by Frankie Donlon. • Episode 56: Labyrinth

    05/05/2017 Duration: 56min

We felt like jumping head first back into the 80s so natch we picked Labyrinth to get us there! Released in 1986, and starring David Bowie as THE Goblin King or 'Jareth' aka Jared, Labyrinth has the 80s oozing out of its Muppet orifices.  Although we are by no means die hard Labyrinth fans, we can appreciate the full on creativity and amazement that is the work of Jim Henson. So join us as we discuss our least favorite Labyrinth stops, our favorite friendly companions, and how inappropriate David Bowie's giant bulging dong is. Dance Magic Dance? More like Junk Magic Junk.  Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. Logo designed by Frankie Donlon. Follow us on Twitter @TheSweetieClub and on Instagram @LargeMargeSentUs

Starring Jim Carrey in his groundbreaking role as a lovable eccentric pet detective, Ace Ventura exists in the Sweetie canon of our top 10 flicks. We'll talk about our many levels of confusion involving (but not limited to) blowjobs, Einhorn's history as a missing hiker/failed football star, and, sexual intercourse and the importance of '3 times'. We'll also 'choose our own comedy' by indulging the listeners in our favorite misheard quotes AND fall down a rabbit hole of famous old lady actresses (Spoiler: they're all dead now! :(   ) Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. 24/04/2017 Duration: 56min

The Sweeties are busy flying to L.A., so enjoy this sweet episode where we talk about everyone's favorite kid baseball flick--The Sandlot! We'll talk about the epic hotness of one Benny 'The Jet' Rodriguez, get into a discussion of the sexism that existed in 90s sports movies, and share stories of our short lived baseball careers. We'll ask important questions like, Why does Benny keep a spare hat in his pocket at all times? Did the kids just imagine the Beast's ferociousness AND was James Earl Jones a hoarder or did he just not give AF because he was blind?  Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. • Episode 53: Return to OZ

    21/04/2017 Duration: 01h06s

In 1985 a Disney movie was born and quickly wormed its way into the fears of every child known to mankind. Sorry too dramatic? But for realz. Return to OZ is the movie that still haunts many of us today and is the reason why most of us panic and abandon a shopping cart at the first sign of squeak. Join us as we discuss those pesky Wheelers, the awesome/horrifying Princess Mombi and her weird man voice, and take a deep dive into Sweetie's latent fear of rock people wearing hidden dress shoes. There's no place like home but seriously, there has to be a better place than Kansas...Am I right? Theme song performed by Deidre Cullen. Logo designed by Frankie Donlon. Wayne's World, released in 1992 is the SNL skit brought to life. Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar have a cable access show in a basement in Aurora, Illinois. Someone comes along and tries to exploit it, but that's not important because this movie is all about the hilarious one liners and even though we were a mere 9 and 6 years old, this movie soon became our most quotable--- even if we didn't get 85% of the jokes! So get in your Mirth mobile and grab your Fender Stratocaster and listen along as we chat about all the lines that we use in our daily life (Car!
