Girls Interrupting

Kate Leth and Megan Levens created a world The Girls want to go to in this week's Bite-Sized Episode of Girls Interrupting. SPELL ON WHEELS is a story about three women, their friendship, magic, hunting thieves, dealing with lecherous misogynists, rescuing each other, flirting with Goatmen, and controlling your own destiny. Suffice it to say, a raucous good time was had by all!

The Girls went to see Wonder Woman on opening night and WOW OH WOW did they have a great time!!

This month, the Girls read LADYKILLER and fall completely in love with Josie, competent and sexy hitwoman and mother of two. She does it all, cooks, cleans, looks after her twin girls, coddles her undeserving husband, and takes out mob-bosses in fishnets and heels. We want to BE HER. Well, at least one of us does (Monica), the rest of us just really like her. We also talk about all the new trailers that dropped in the last month as well as just what's wrong with some of the choices those movies have made... There's also a new season of Gamebangers and the field is wide open for either a returning champion or a brand new one!!

It's the beginning of a brand-new journey for the INVINCIBLE IRON MAN title, and we are so happy to be here at the starting line! After the shenanigans of Civil War II, teenaged Riri Williams is taking the titanium-alloy reins from a not-quite-deceased Tony Stark. We couldn't care less about the INFAMOUS Doom; as far as we're concerned, Riri's Ironheart, as depicted by Brian Michael Bendis and Stefano Caselli, is the real heir to the throne.

We all want to be social justice warriors, but most of us can’t punch a tank. Allison Green can, but she’s retired. And actually, she’s not sure if tank-punching is even all that useful. This week we’re talking STRONG FEMALE PROTAGONIST, an ongoing webcomic by Brennan Lee Mulligan and Molly Ostertag. In the first two chapters, we see Allison struggle with the idea of normalcy in a post-cape existence. Like most twentysomethings, she wonders about her place in the world, her purpose, and how to make the world better (without so much tank-punching).

The Girls return to a galaxy far, far away with the first volume of DARTH VADER by Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca. Vader finds himself on the outs with the Emperor after the destruction of the first Death Star (see STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE for more details, check your local listings) and falls in with two homicidal droids and everyone's new favorite, Doctor Aphra. Who loves Vader the most? Who hates C3PO the most? Who caught the Indiana Jones reference? All this and murder jokes this week on Girls Interrupting!

This week, the Girls are excited to follow the uniquely named Dexedrine Callisto Parios into the murky mysteries of STUMPTOWN, a Portland-based PI story written by podcast favorite Greg Rucka, with art by Matthew Southworth and Lee Loughridge.

Mr. Lewis tells us about his experience in the fledgling Civil Rights Movement of the early 1950s against the juxtaposition of attending the 2009 Inauguration of the first black president of the United States. It is a moving and historical book that pulls no punches about just what was done in order to get the Civil Rights Movement off the ground, let alone to a place where it would be successful. We also wanted to talk to you about something extremely important to us–anyone that listens to this podcast knows we are adamant supporters of justice, truth, and equality. T

In a local tale of terror recommended to us by one of our most loyal listeners, we peer behind the dusty curtains of the infamous Winchester Mystery House. It's true that Sarah Winchester was obsessed with continuously adding more and more rooms to her San Jose home after the death of her husband and daughter, but was it merely madness that drove her, or was something more sinister lurking in the halls built by the Winchester rifle? We dive into this tale by Peter J. Tomasi, Ian Bertram, and Dave Stewart to see if we can find out!

It's a brand-new story but the same old Jess as we rejoin JESSICA JONES creators Brian Michael Bendis, Michael Gaydos, and Matt Hollingsworth. We find that Jessica's self-destructive streak is in full swing again, she's hidden baby Dani from Luke, and all her friends are mad at her. But she's still got us!

This week we're reading Matt Fraction and Christian Ward's genderbent, psychedelic space opera interpretation of Homer's The Odyssey, otherwise known as ODY-C! We're all agreed that it is both really weird and really pretty.

We're following T'Challa into the heart of Wakandan politics this week as we read BLACK PANTHER #1-#2. Written by Ta-Nehisi Coates with art by Brian Stelfreeze and Laura Martin, these two issues feel like the beginning of something great.

Hello listeners, we are BACK!! We've made it through the first set of Holiday hurtles and have brought you FAITH #1-2 by Jody Houser, Francis Portela, and a great group at Variant. This is a story about a superhero who has either recently left her team and is facing an office held at gunpoint OR she's just been stabbed in the neck by Variant's version of Chris Evans. Annnnnnnnd the ladies are BACK with talk about podcast favorite Marguerite Bennett's latest comic Animosity!! Animals are woke... and we are LOVING it. Savage, and yet heartfelt-- Marguerite just gets us, ya know?
