Doctor Who: Who's He? Podcast

After last weeks disappointing outing for the Doctor, Phil and a returning Paul turn their attentions to the latest episode The Rings of Akhaten.  Is this episode an improvement on last weeks or is it just another crushing disappointment?  Listen to find out if this podcast is just another hatred and bile filled episode or full of wonder and delight.  But during the course of this episode Phil makes up a new word and offers up his pen to Grandfather.  Paul looks on and shakes his head in bemusement. New Doctor Who to review!  Hoorah??  This week Phil is joined once again by Martyn Havell from the Bad Wilf Podcast to review the opening episode of series 7 part 2, The Bells of Saint John.  While the pair of them are pleased Doctor Who has returned, neither of them are particuarly pleased with this story.  Oh no, they are not pleased with recycled ideas and plot holes you could ride a bike through, so tune in to find out just how displeased they were!! Mind you, it wouldn't be the Who's He? Podcast if there wasn't a certain amount of negativity now would it? And in the news this week, David Tennant and Billie Piper to return to Doctor Who for the 50th Anniversary and in an exclusive for the Who's He? Podcast we announce today of all days that Paul McGann will return for the 50th in a new idea for the show - degeneration!!  Also the BBC announces they are cancelling the sequels to the Doctor Who console game The Eternity Clock. This week, Paul & Phil review the latest in the Destiny of The Doctor audio stories, Vengeance Of The Stones featuring the 3rd Doctor.  Does this story follow up on the brilliance of Shadow of Death or does it cause Phil and Paul to disagree for the first time in ages?  Listen to find out but be warned: Scottish stereotypes are discussed and the word "stones" is used with wanton abandon! And in the news this week, the air time and a prologue (I refuse to call it a prequel!) for The Bells of Saint John is revealed to waiting fans, filming for the 50th Anniversary special has been pushed back, the tabloids start their typical rumours that Matt Smith is leaving, Peter Jackson will direct an episode of Doctor Who if Steven Moffat gives him a Dalek and in Omega's Tat Corner they return to a piece of tat that they discussed a few episodes back.  Blimey, that could've been explained better.  Why didn't I put "previously on Omega's Tat Corner" instead?  Really need to get a proof reader for this rubbish.

It's time for an audio commentary!!  This month, the lads have chosen a short story for your delectation in the form of Black Orchid.  During the course of this story, Phil, Paul & Tony stop to marvel at the cricketing prowess of Peter Davison and also gaze in wonder at the seemingly never ending appetite of the gluttonous Adric.   And in the news this week, The Caves of Androzani is the next to be shown at the BFI Doctor Who 50 season, Caroline Skinner to leave Doctor Who, DVD updates for Inferno Special Edition and the Mind of Evil and the next in the Destiny of The Doctor series.

After a longer than usual break between episodes, Phil & Paul return with their long overdue review of the Target novelisation Doctor Who and The Cave Monsters.  During the course of dissecting this book, they discuss the problem of poorly realised femaie characters, rushed endings and the dietary habits of 1970's Britain. And in the news this week, the announcement of an official convention to celebrate the 50th Anniversary and also a recap on the news they missed out on during the last couple of weeks including the Ice Warriors makeover for series 7, and the perils of press releases giving away major plotlines.

This week Phil and Paul continue with their retrospective of series 3 with a look back at Gridlock.  What will they make of this story after all this time and do they think it's a rollicking good adventure or a big disappointment?  In making their minds up, they get into a bit of a disagreement over Martha Jones character and Paul spoils an otherwise lighthearted piece of banter concerning corpse disposal. And in the news this week, there is plenty of update on the Mark Gatiss drama An Adventure in Space and Time, news of series 8 straight from the mouth of Steven Moffatt and in Omega's Tat Corner, Paul's lonely existence is called into question with his methods of seduction.  

They're back!!  After disappearing from the airwaves while Phil became a Father, Phil & Paul return with a look at the lates of the Destiny of The Doctor audio stories Shadow of Death.  Would they think this was an improvement on the last Destiny of The Doctor story or would it be another disappointment in this 50th Anniversary series?  Mind you, they're only doing this as they're not at Gallifrey One like everyone else!! And in the news this week, the Ice Warriors make their return in series 7, the 50th Anniversary story will be in 3D, loads of updates on the BFI Doctor Who screenings and a brief sojourn is made to Omega's Tat Corner. Now how's that for an alternative to the greatest Doctor Who convention on the planet?  

This week, Phil, Paul & Tony continue with their audio commentary for Destiny of The Daleks episodes 3 & 4.  They apologise profusely as Tony's facts get more laboured, the story gets worse and the three of them lose the will to live.  They manage to get out alive though before the listeners at their door with flaming torches and pitch forks. And in the news this week, Phil & Paul are joined by a new invention: Robot Tony!  He helps them go through this weeks massive news stories which are: the air date for series 7 part 2 is revealed, the alleged running time for the 50th Anniversary special, the Daily Mirror rip off a news story from another paper and Adam Woodyatt wants a part in Doctor Who.  Yes, you did read that right.

It's the first audio commentary of the year, so that means once again Tony returns to the fold to join Phil & Paul in getting through Destiny of The Daleks episodes 1 & 2.  This one is real struggle folks!  The lads do their best to keep their spirits up in this shoddy run down Daleks, Stevie Wonder disco wigs and ill fitting Davros masks but try as they might, this one gets the better of them!  Tony tries desparately to inject some humour into proceedings with his facts but these fall flat in the face of this dreadful story! And in the news this week the January releases from Big Finish, news of an actor who would like to return to Doctor Who and one actress who isn't and a return to Omega's Tat Corner with some overpriced glittery tat that wouldn't look out of place on QVC.

It's a return to our series 3 retrospective with a look at The Shakespeare Code.  However, this week there is a change in the presenting line up as Phil is joined by the excellent Martyn Havell from the Bad Wilf Podcast who makes a long overdue return to the show.  So how does this historical story hold up after all this time?  Is it more Kenneth Brannagh's Hamlet or more Jet Li's Romeo Must Die?  Find out what they think and as a bonus you will also discover that Chevy Chase is God and Haircut 100 rule!! At last, new Doctor Who to watch!!  Yes, Phil and Paul size up this years festive Doctor Who offering, The Snowmen.  Is this the best Christmas special ever?  Well, there is plenty for the lads to discuss: a new companion, a new TARDIS, a new theme tune and new opening titles!!  What more could you ask for from Father Christmas otherwise known as Steven Moffat?  A good story that's what!!  So listen to find out if this is an improvement on last years dismal offering!! And in the news this week, it's the return of no-ones favourite subject - audience figures!  The latest is revealed on th Royal Mails 50th Anniversary Doctor Who stamps and it's a sad end to 2012 with passing of Sir Richard Rodney Bennett and Gerry Anderson. It's the turn of Doctor Who from Christmas past as Phil and Paul take a look at the 2008 Christmas special The Next Doctor.  During the course of dissecting this story of Cybermen and mistaken identity, you will hear things that have nothing to do with the episode in hand, like Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, The Travelling Wilburys, The Crying Boy, The Blue Boy and Labradoodles.  Now what other podcast brings you such a wide range of topics eh? And in the news this week there are plenty of surpises in store for this years Christmas special, The Snowmen and updates on next years BFI 50th Anniversary events and DVD releases. This week Phil and Paul return to Doctor Who in its audio format with a look at Big Finish Productions story Project: Twilight, a story of South East London gangsters (shut it you slags!) and vampires.  Find out whether this story holds up for them or does it have no bite? (I am so sorry for that bad play on words.  I shall ruminate on my behaviour and it will not happen again.  Thank you.) And in this weeks news we find out when Doctor Who returns to our screens in 2013, the sad passing of two of the UK's legends of broadcasting in which Phil confuses his Kenneth's and the results of a recent of Doctor Who memorabilia auction.  And Omega's Tat Corner makes a welcome return to the show with a very expensive but snazzy piece of tat and more disappointing figures to collect.

In this weeks edition of the Who's He? Podcast, Paul and Phil turn their attention to the Target novelisation of The Tenth Planet.  Unfortunately after a few weeks of the lads being reasonably happy, they return to form as they do not like this book.  Not one bit.  So much so, Paul forgets how to count and throws his A Level Maths certificate on the fire and Phil goes down a dead end in the conversation. And in the news the TARDIS gets a makeover for Christmas, find out who is voicing the villainous Snowmen, some DVD news and the ghost of Jon Pertwee returns to haunt Paul.  Also keep listening right to then end this week as Paul has his soul dirtied.

At the second time of asking, Phil and Paul are giving it another go with Smith and Jones, the series 3 opener.  This time they are a bit more with it but get easily sidetracked along the way with a discussion on the Doctor kissing his companions - does it still shock or is it old hat now?  Phil also manages to get in an impression of Terry Scott and during the recording Paul is visited by the ghost of Jon Pertwee. And in the news this week, a few items on the 50th Anniversary including events at the BFI next year, Christopher Eccleston being coy about his involvement and what's going on with the good Doctor at Christmas this year with a quick run-down on what ex-Who actors are appearing in panto this year and there's also a brief return to Omega's Tat Corner!!  Just watch out for John Barrowman in panto this year, he'll have your eye out!

After leaving you all on a cliff hanger last week, it's the return of Phil, Paul and Tony with part 2 of their audio commentary for Dalek Invasion of Earth!!  What's in store for you all this week?  Well folks, it's the same as last week, awful puns, Tony's facts and long bouts of silence.  However, this is all interspersed with a long ramble about Toffo's, recounting who's still alive from Are You Being Served and Tony manages to offend Hewlett Packard. And in the news this week, extra dates for the Doctor Who Symphony Spectacular in Australia, Bonhams have plenty of Who related memorabilia up for auction, audience figures for The Great Detective prologue and The Snowmen trailer, plus the return of Omega's Tat Corner with some overpriced rubbish!!

After a no show with the podcast last week, episode 84 finally gets made but not what was advertised in the previous episode.  Oh no, they've gone and done an audio commentary instead and this month it's Dalek Invasion of Earth episodes 1 to 3.  During the commentary hear, feel and hit Tony as he makes Phil deploy the dreaded swear beep for the second time in the podcasts history!  Thrill as Paul wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and gasp in horror as Phil makes jokes about onanism!  But make no mistake, any diversity training they might have had went straight out the window! And in the news this week, the Doctor Who Christmas Special prologue and trailer aired on Children In Need where we all found out the name of this years special, Doctor Who is up for a People's Choice award, Steven Moffat wins a Writers Guild Award (though none of them can figure out what for) and Alex Kingston reads the Angels Kiss that they all treat with complete indifference.

This weeks podcast starts off strangely.....there's no Paul!!  Yes Phil is left to his own devices to begin with as he goes through this weeks news items which include casting news for series 7b, the Live+7 viewing figures for series 7a a BFI screening of a lost Doctor Who episode and a brief sojourn to Omegas Tat Corner. But when Paul finally shows up, they get stuck into another audio story, The Ghosts of N-Space, a story so convoluted and filled with ethnic stereotypes, Paul can't help but have a Dolmio day whilst Phil lets rip with his best Sandra Dickinson impression.  Still, they have a good time even if no-one else does.  Now, you can put the dinner on, I'll be home in 20 minutes.

After recording this particular episode months ago, they've decided to unleash it upon an unsuspecting public.  So stand back and prepare yourselves for the first in an occasional series of Target book reviews, starting with The Pyramids of Mars by Terrance Dicks.  However, comparisions are purposely made between the book and the transmitted version.  How do Phil and Paul think they compare?  Tune in to find out!
