  • Scott Dadich: Gut, Heart, and Head Alignment

    16/03/2017 Duration: 44min

Scott Dadich is a designer, filmmaker and entrepreneur. He’s currently the co-CEO of Godfrey Dadich Partners, a design, content and strategy firm. Prior to that he worked at Conde Nast where he was the editor of Wired and helped Conde Nast build out their digital strategy including the tablet editions of their magazines (and if you remember when those came out, they were incredible products that were among the first things really felt tablet native). He’s also the creator of the amazing new Netflix series “Abstract: The Art Of Design”-- I’m sure a lot of you have already binge-watched it, and if you haven’t then do yourself a favor and check it out ASAP. Today on the podcast, * We talk about why you should listen to your instincts or as he says, to the voice inside. He’s got a great term for this which is finding “gut/head alignment.” I’m a big advocate of learning how to hear and trust your instincts and this has been my biggest asset in many ways. * He gets into the making of “Abstract,” the transition from

  • When to listen to the voices in your head

    09/03/2017 Duration: 18min

I’ve talked before about that 3AM voice - the one that whispers in your ear that you're not good enough or that maybe you'll fail and so therefore it's probably better if you just quit now. That voice is what I call the gremlins. The gremlins are not your friend, and you've got to learn how to ignore them. But here's the thing - there’s another voice that often sounds very similar to the gremlin voice, except that it’s RIGHT. It’s the voice of your instincts, and its absolutely critical that you trust and listen to this voice. The key here is to learn how to tell the two apart, because like I said they can sound very similar until you learn how to train your inner ear to know the difference between gremlins and instincts - and in this episode I give you the details on how to do exactly that. • Debbie Millman: If not now, when?

    02/03/2017 Duration: 01h03min

Debbie Millman is currently the Editorial and Creative Director of Print Magazine, but she has an insane track record going back decades: she’s the author of 6 books including “How To Think Like A Great Graphic Designer,” a prolific design writer in outlets like NYT, Fast Company, and Design Observer, chairs the Masters In Branding program at SVA (co-founded with Steven Heller), and hosts a long running podcast called “design matters” which has done 265 episodes over 10 years with legends and icons like Michael Beirut, Stephen Heller, Chip Kidd, Massimo Vignelli, Isaac Mizrahi and Malcolm Gladwell. Today on the podcast, * She says that “confidence is overrated.” This is something I know a lot of you struggle with and I love how she talks about this. Confidence is created by repeatedly doing something, and if you’ve never done something before how could you have confidence? Confidence - in her view - is the easy part. It’s finding the courage to do the thing when you DON’T have confidence that is the gamechang

  • Adrian Grenier: You can’t scale if you do it alone

    16/02/2017 Duration: 01h22min

You may know Adrian as the star of Entourage and The Devil Wears Prada, but he also has a lengthy history as a documentarian and entrepreneur who’s made a lifelong habit out of going around, over and through the various gatekeepers that stood between him and his goals. You’ll hear a lot of familiar themes come up in this conversation that are very core to me: the critical importance of building a community of peers who will motivate, inspire and help each other; how mentorship can be a catalyst for progress; and the drive for continuous and never-ending self-education. Today on the podcast, * Why Adrian is a passionate learner, yet dropped out of college when he found that the traditional educational system wasn’t actually educating him * We get into his history as a documentarian - for example, how he got the call for Entourage while trying to sneak into Cuba to make a documentary * How creativity can play a vital role in driving social change. Our special guest Dune Ives of The Lonely Whale Foundation talks

  • Caterina Fake: Teach Yourself

    09/02/2017 Duration: 01h13min

Caterina Fake is best known for being the co-founder of Flickr, which pioneered a ton of the things that we now take for granted on the internet: social networking, tagging, and content surfacing algorithms to name just a few. But like many of us, her career path has been - to say the least - unpredictable. On the way to becoming the co-founder of Flickr, Caterina Fake explored everything from banking to graphic design to writing novels, and she’s now the Chairman of the Board for Etsy, a board member at Creative Commons, and on the board of advisors for the Berkeley School of Information. And while there's a narrative in our culture that this sort of winding path indicates that something went wrong, I believe the opposite - I believe that it creates the sort of eclectic, versatile people who will (like Caterina) thrive in the new "skill economy." Today on the podcast, * How Caterina ended up co-founding Flickr and ultimately selling it to Yahoo even though she grew up as a self-described “artsy girl” - a far

  • Elle Luna: Should vs Must

    02/02/2017 Duration: 01h18min

If you’ve ever asked yourself - as almost all of us have - “how can I find and follow my calling and my passion,” then you’re going to get a lot out of this conversation. Elle has a book describing her own search for an answer to this question which is called “The Crossroads of Should And Must” which explores the tension between the expectations that parents, friends, and culture put on us (what she calls “should”) and who we are and what we know to be true (what she calls “must”).  Today on the podcast, * She breaks work down into 3 categories: jobs, careers and callings. So many of us are stuck in one of the first 2, looking for a way to get to the 3rd. * Accountability comes up again - a common theme in a lot of these conversations as a really key part of the creative process, to help get us across the finish line and actually COMPLETE our ideas. For Elle, the key is attaching a human to it - she says “if someone I love is counting on me to deliver something, I won’t let them down.” * Another familiar them

  • Gretchen Rubin: Think about milestones, not finish lines

    26/01/2017 Duration: 01h07min

Gretchen Rubin is the author of several blockbuster NYT bestsellers (Better Than Before, The Happiness Project and Happier At Home) which have sold millions of copies worldwide. If you notice a common theme of “happiness,” that’s because Gretchen is one of the world’s foremost “happiness experts.” Today on the podcast, * Gretchen talks about her concept of “drift." Drift is what happens when we take the path of least resistance, which avoids friction in the short term but often leads to unhappiness in the long term * She also gets into several of her “personality frameworks” like obliger, upholder, rebel, questioner.  * We talk about accountability: “A lot of people who are frustrated with themselves just need accountability.” Boom. • Brian Solis: It’s not good enough to be good enough

    19/01/2017 Duration: 48min

Brian Solis is a digital anthropologist and futurist, studying disruptive technology and its impact on the future of business and society. This episode is all about design-- specifically experience design, which is the topic of Brian’s latest book “X: The Experience When Business Meets Design.” It's the paradigm which drives companies like Nike, Airbnb, and Uber that are transforming one industry after the other, and Brian has some great insights that will help you wrap your head around it and apply it to your own work. Today on the podcast, * How to take inspiration from brands, people and products that are outside your industry-- for example, as Brian says Starbucks isn’t looking to other coffee companies for inspiration * We address the common misconception that innovation is synonymous with technology, and why innovation is really about understanding people- their behavior, their preferences - and finding a way to give it to them * Brian says that simply asking "why" is one of the best ways for us to unco

  • James Altucher: Experiment and give up fast

    12/01/2017 Duration: 01h19min

To list all of James Altucher's accomplishments would take more space than we have here, but the short version is that he's written something like 18 books, he’s got a wildly popular blog called the Altucher Confidential, an awesome podcast, and he's started 20 (yes, 20!) companies-- and that's just the highlights. Today on the podcast... * We talk about a great framework for a daily checklist: Am I doing something for my physical health? For my personal relationships, creativity, and practicing some gratitude? * We get into some specific tips on how to deal with anxiety, specifically how to keep it from coming between you and getting closer to your dreams * James talks about why you need to think of yourself as a business (literally as a collection of SKUs) and why we’re all likely to be “hyphens” in the future Enjoy! Tina says, "If I keep repeatedly complaining about something, I have to either fix it or let it go" * We get into Tattly, how it came about, but also how her values & principals drive how she does business. He became an international celebrity and an accidental hero to men after writing The Game, where he went undercover in a secret society of pickup artists for two years. If that wasn’t enough Neil is an award winning columnist at the New York Times and Rolling Stone, for which he’s well-known for earning the trust of some of the most guarded and secretive celebrities in the world. Today on the podcast... * We dig into vulnerability. Neil says the things that you’re most afraid to share are probably the things you to. If you’re feeling it, other people will too. * We also talk about the inner critic - the programmed messages you carry that aren’t true. * And we tackle fear: where it comes from, and how your best work can come from it. • Austin Kleon: Productivity is Overrated

    22/12/2016 Duration: 01h21min

Austin Kleon likes to call himself “a writer who draws.”  He is the best selling author of three illustrated books (Newspaper Blackout, Steal Like an Artist and Show Your Work), and one of the most insightful voices on the topic of creativity. He’s been featured on media institutions like NPR’s Morning Edition, Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and PBS Newshour and speaks for organizations such as Pixar, Google, SXSW, TEDx, and The Economist. In today’s episode we talk about: *  Creativity & creative “genius”. Creative genius can be as much about your network (and how you use it) as it is about your work. It’s by looking around and seeing what people are doing, and also what they are not doing that new ideas form. * We also talk about morning routines. One of the things that Austin likes to do, which I also subscribe is to, is do the creative stuff first. * We also talk a bit about productivity. There’s a lot of pressure to hustle. He challenges that idea by saying to not focus on the hustle but foc

  • Daymond John: Failing Fast & The Power of Broke

    16/12/2016 Duration: 01h08min

His businesses have been prescient and successful, and as an angel investor he has bet on major players before they were big: Square, Twitter and Uber, to name a few. • The Attitude of Gratitude

    02/12/2016 Duration: 19min

I’m often asked what are the biggest levers that have made a difference in my career & life. I’m a huge believer that so much of ‘THE GAME’ is mental. If you've been following me for awhile, you'll know I almost always bring up mediation. Perhaps my second not-so-secret weapon is gratitude. In today's podcast, I dive a little deeper into gratitude: what is it and how you can do it + a few places where I've shared more on this topic. Today's episode is a new segment on the podcast: Micro Shows. In addition to the bad-ass guest interviews, these will be short 5 to 15 minute segments sharing inspirational tidbits, hot news, discussion on specific topics, and more. • Brandon Stanton: The Hard Work of Dreams

    23/11/2016 Duration: 01h35min

In 2010, Brandon Stanton started taking pictures of people on the streets of New York City and posting them on a blog. After thousands of conversations and pictures, Brandon realized he wasn’t a photographer. Rather, he was a believer in connection, in community, and in basic human sweetness. In large part, Brandon’s work has been so influential because he removed himself from the equation and allowed the communities he documents to speak for themselves. Brandon’s blog Humans of New York has accumulated over 20 million followers worldwide and turned into two NYT-bestselling books (Humans of New York and Humans of New York: Stories). It has also spawned an entire genre of similar blogs. Hundreds of aspiring documentarians have followed in HONY’s footsteps, telling the stories of countries, cities, and communities across the world. Brandon is also a dedicated philanthropist. He has spearheaded crowdfunded initiatives that have raised over $2 million for causes including victims of Hurricane Sandy and a scholars
