    27/07/2013 Duration: 01h36min

Episode Seven "The Best Team in the World" In Chapter Seven we are joined by Stephen Sullivan from the Fifa.com and biographer of the forthcoming book on Sean Fallon. We cover the period 1960 to 1970 which is undoubtedly the golden age for the Club. Despite a disappointing start to the decade, the Clubs fortunes are transformed with the appointment of Jock Stein to the managerial seat as we see the team going from great pretenders to a European force. It was bliss for everyone involved with the Club in this period as we not only discuss Lisbon, but chart the development of the team from the European Cup Winners Cup disappointment of 1964 to the all-conquering team of the late sixties. We listen to Ian Young, Bertie Auld, Bobby Lennox, George Connelly and the late Joe McBride telling of their experiences of playing in the hoops during the period and revel in the glory that was Celtic – The Greatest Team in the World. • Chapter Six 1950-60

    20/07/2013 Duration: 02h03min

"Making A Stand" In this Sixth episode we are joined by Paul Brennan from the Celtic Quick News to cover the period 1950 to 1960. With World War Two over, Scotland wasn't the land of milk and honey as promised, but a country still struggling with rebuilding and rationing. Celtic were rebuilding too and enjoyed a relatively successful period by clinching a double, the Coronation Cup and destroying Rangers 7-1 in the League Cup final of 1957. At first glance this sounds like success but the 1950's promised so much more and the trophy haul was a poor reflection on a team with great talent yet poor leadership. Off the pitch the Club were faced with some of its biggest challenges since its birth in 1887 as the fundamentals of the club's identity came under attack from the authorities. Things came to breaking point and a stand had to be made and thankfully for once the hierarchy of the Club stuck to their principals and stood firm. Despite these distractions the building blocks were being laid for a team t

  • Chapter Five 1940-50

    12/07/2013 Duration: 01h58min

Episode Five "Apathy and Protest" In this Fifth episode we are joined by Marty Flynn from the Belfast Celtic Society to cover the period 1940 to 1950 in a decade where Celtic find themselves practically running to stand still. Refusing to utilise guest players stationed in Scotland during the War, Celtic miss many opportunities to put quality on the pitch and that is reflected in the results. Willie Maley is replaced by Jimmy McStay, who in turn is replaced by Jimmy McGrory as the Club limp along. Off the pitch supporters begin to organise themselves as the fans become discontented with what they are watching. There is the threat of relegation, meetings in graveyards and dodgy referees again, all against the back drop of war and rationing………Thank God for Jock Weir and Charlie Tully There is also the History of the Stadium, History of the Celtic Shirt and all your Fan Stories and Confessions. As our Fifth guest, Marty nominates The Celtic Graves society as the nominated charity and you can lea

Episode Four "Still in the Hearts They Left Behind" In this Fourth episode we are joined by Tom Minogue from the Celtic Wiki to cover the period 1930 to 1940 in a decade where Celtic find themselves struggling for form and consistency. Despite the wealth of talent on the field in the shape of Thomson, Crum, Delaney, Divers and Lyon among others, the Club’s “Biscuit Tin” mentality raises its ugly head as the stars are moved on instead of seeing the talent built upon. Champions twice, Cup winners three times and the winners of the Empire Exhibition trophy see Celtic limp along in a decade that promised so much yet returned little in the way of success. The thirties start off in tragic circumstances with the death of John Thomson and also sees the loss of Peter Scarff and Bertie Thomson, three huge characters in our history, lost to us in their prime, yet the team continue to produce talents that were the envy of our rivals. Questionable refereeing decisions and off the pitch political battles provides a b

  • Chapter 3 Improvisation and Inspiration

    29/06/2013 Duration: 01h39min

Episode Three "Improvisation and Inspiration" In this third episode we are joined by Paul Larkin to cover the period 1920 to 1930 in a decade where Celtic are up against the rising force of Rangers. Still, a haul of 13 trophies in ten years wasn’t a bad return for a team blessed with the talents of McGrory, Gallagher, Cassidy, Cringan, McNally and McLean. The war is now over and recession is kicking in as Celtic play in an era building up to the General Strike of 1926. The poor of Glasgow’s East End turn to the emerging Labour Party and the rise of Red Clydeside as the streets are carved up by vicious gangs with violence and social unrest a common occurrence. Add to this the political changes and armed warfare going on in Ireland, the fans of Celtic cling onto their love of their team despite the challenges at the time. There is also the History of the Stadium, History of the Celtic Shirt and all your Fan Stories and Confessions. As our third guest, Paul nominates Aisling Irish Center in the Bronx of

  • Chapter two 1900-1920

    18/06/2013 Duration: 01h48min

Episode Two "Freedom and Liberation" In this second episode we are joined by Harry Brady from Celtic Underground to cover the period 1900 to 1920 and it’s not long before we are discussing conspiracy theories against the Club even back in those early days. On the pitch, however, things really start to get exciting as Celtic won six league titles in a row between 1904/05 and 1909/10 and even won every competition they entered in 1907-08. We learn about the introduction of the hoops and reason behind the dreaded term “Old Firm”. Bennet, McMenemy, Quinn, Somers and Hamilton were the deadliest front line in Scottish football of the period, but it wasn’t long before it was a different front line that was come to the fore as we chat about Celtic in the First World War and all the social unrest in Glasgow both during this time and shortly after its conclusion There is also the History of the Stadium, History of the Celtic Shirt and all your Fan Stories and Confessions. As our second guest, Harry nominates

We chat about the formation of the Club, the opening of the first stadium and the creation of the team. All this is set against the backdrop of the desperation of the new Irish immigrant who continued to struggle to find a place socially in the Glasgow of the 1890s. As the decade wore on, the local population in the East of the City finally had something to cheer about and be proud of. Listen to Jim and Paul explain the boardroom battles of the time that makes the 1994 takeover sound like a tea party as the Club develops the first stages of professionalism. However it was on the pitch where the most significant progress was made as the first heroes to wear the hoops started to emerge. Names like James Kelly, Johnny Campbell, Sandy McMahon and “The Wild Rover” himself, Dan Doyle rolled off the tongues of the ever growin
