On 17 February, around 40 experts from India and Australia came together for a two-day workshop to share expertise and develop strategies to reduce drowning deaths. With more than 38,000 drowning fatalities reported in India in 2022 and 357 deaths recorded in Australia in 2025, both countries are looking to learn from each other to strengthen water safety measures.

Bipin Kashyap, a resident of Assam, has loved wildlife, especially elephants, since childhood. His passion grew stronger at 16 when he rescued an elephant. Since then, he has devoted his life to protecting and saving them, considering them part of his family. He can even recognise many older elephants. During the rainy season, when elephants fall into streams, Bipin quickly rushes to rescue them with the help of his companions. He also works with the forest department to treat and support injured elephants.

A new report has explored what shapes the sense of belonging among Australia’s fastest-growing migrant communities, including people with ties to China, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Iraq and the Philippines. Commissioned by the Department of Home Affairs and conducted by researchers at the Scanlon Foundation Research Institute, the study found that community connections are the strongest drivers of migrants’ sense of belonging in Australia. Participants identified the biggest settlement challenges as securing meaningful employment, followed by feelings of isolation or cultural difference, learning English, managing living costs and finding culturally appropriate food.

A Melbourne-based not-for-profit organisation, Full Circle empowers underprivileged children in India through education and leadership programs. By hosting diverse fundraising events, including film screenings and community gatherings, the organisation raises vital support to help children break cycles of poverty and build brighter futures. The National Road Transport Association (NatRoad) has expanded the reach of its vital first aid training by offering the course in many languages. Following the launch of a Punjabi version of its free Truckie First Aid program, NatRoad has recently introduced a Hindi edition. The course covers essential life-saving skills, including CPR, how to use a defibrillator, managing different types of bleeding, and other techniques designed to reduce long-term harm. Delivered in partnership with St John Ambulance, the program equips truck drivers from non-English-speaking backgrounds with the knowledge, skills and confidence to respond effectively at accident scenes.
