Sometimes a movie is too good to be appreciated in its original theatrical release. Sometimes a film is marketed so poorly that people don’t know how good the movie turns out to be. Sometimes a movie will find its audience years later. Sometimes a movie is so good and makes you laugh so much every time you watch it that it becomes a favorite regardless. All three of us at My Favorite Movie Podcast have an affinity for the Turtles that seems very personal. The Green Mile packs a punch. After a decade-plus of not seeing it, all three of us had very different but exciting experiences watching this movie. While it may be a bit lengthy, this film holds up not only; its story is still very relevant. The Green Mile is rated R and was released on December 10, 1999. The ’80s seemed to have been one of the most popular decades in pop culture history, as its influences, music, books, video games, and movies seem to continue to inspire stories today. Even if you didn’t live thru it, you have experienced it thru John Hues or Steven Spielberg films, or more recently, thru video games like Grand Theft Auto Vice City. The movie that our conversation covers today came out in the twenty-teens, but it is a love letter to all things ‘80s, and we bast in all of its nostalgic glory. If you are a long-time listener of the podcast, then you know how much the Muppets mean to all three of us. When all three of us first saw “Coming To America,” we didn’t realize that there was, or would be, a lot of controversy surrounding the film. Some thirty-plus years later, there are groups of folks that can’t see the comedy thru the racial and gender politics of the film. We three still find it funny, and we chat about whether it’s because of our nostalgia or because the film is that funny. We kick it back to the late '90s for a trip on the juvenile, funny, sometimes cringe-worthy Mike Myers movie that showed that he was more than just Wayne from Wayne's World. The film was a big hit, permeating pop culture in many ways. But when seen now, thru a more enlighten eye, the movie has some glaring flaws and some moments that would be best omitted. Sometimes you have to take a trip back to the ’80s to admire the hairstyles, the clothing styles, and the child care styles. As far as the end of the world, disaster movies go, this week’s choice is in a league of its own. In our opinion, this is one of those must-see popcorn movies. Since the film was made and released, some aspects play a little different today than when the movie was released. In what can only be described as a bunch of tangents loosely held together by the premise of a movie, this week’s podcast has at its center the adventure movie The Mummy. Of course, we digress into conversations about the health and well-being of action actors, the merits of acting in special effects-laden movies, and our deep love and appreciation for Brendan Fraser. This week's movie is an Oscar winner for the best-adapted screenplay and an Oscar nominee for Best Picture in 2020. While the film's subject matter may sound like it's heavy and depressing, this movie turns out to be uplifting and entertaining. That's not to say that we didn't get a little teary-eyed during a scene or two, but in the end, we all felt like the experience is well worth it and that more people should give this movie a try.
