First Forty

First discussion section for Philosophy goes well; raining; go home and run but I get soaked; Meggin sends a note along with a sketch of the guest houses; read, have two of my beers, listen to music, and look at the picture until early in the morning.

Buy bike racks and panniers; have Easter dinner at the Fowkes’; talk revolves around billing rates; food goes to waste, yet kids are starving for some real attention; messed up.

We went to the Magic Kingdom and had a great time. I went on Space Mountain and it was really neat.

Take Yuka to airport; saying good-bye is tough; do some shopping at Yaohan; think about selling my Vespa in Japan; rent some videos; Yumi runs into friends; after cleaning, watch our usual Sunday-night lineup on Tokyo Terebi (TV).

Joe calls in the morning to thank me for the tapes; feel a little homesick for L.A.; he says I can stay with him anytime; Linda Yamane guest speaker in Native American Experience; amazing woman — gets me all charged up; call Meggin when I get home; lose my enthusiasm.

Take to driving by Michelle’s on the Vespa; leave little notes; want to take her out for a ride; when I finally catch her she’s with some guy (matching bikes, too…)

Give John his “Popsicle Toes” tape; make down payment on trip; buy tickets for Sting game; hope Beth can come; Grant finds a Mustang for $750; he changes his mind and decides to go to Variety Show with me; 3 papers to finish before dawn!

We made it to Walt Disney and we only had 3 hours till [sic] dark. It seemed like it [sic] the time would never end.

Beautiful day, but chilly; meet a nice guy, Adam, and we exchange stories in class; Frederick Douglass getting captivating (no pun); first meditation class meets; find I’m fighting myself; moon coming up; finish tape for George.

Yumi’s birthday party; clean Eisuke’s apartment; Nintendo game-console collection; roller skating; bowling; presents and cake-cutting; sushi and Japanese pizza; karaoke in San Jose; Yumi wants me to sing with her but I’m nervous; bit of a falling out, then recovery.

Leo (Salazar) in L.A., but I never see him; get my Class M license at the DMV — a real cinch; guy tells me story about a buddy of his in Nam who was bit on the ass by a snake; by the end he’s in hysterics.

School, sleep, work — I hate this; listened to music that reminded me of a lot of things; excited about planning future dates, etc.; run best six miles of my life; watch “Passage to India”; Todd in a weird mood; blow off homework again.

Today we made Geogia [sic] and went to the bottom of it. We met a dog named Grover.

Yumi and Yuka meet and then hang out with Yuriko; pick up t-shirts at RealColor; Hiroe helps me at Kuumbwa; Yumi home sick so I go home straight away; she’s just resting up from a long day.

Saw Ray again; talked about my parents; he thinks I’m committed to Meggin; more anxiety; speak with Professor Treat about Indian Hobbyism; more to think about; message from Ann; finish letter to Meggin; earthquake in Japan.

Hear casting call for some Disney commercial; Claire and I are game so we swing on by; the shoot is for the VHS release of “The Little Mermaid”; make up some B.S. and somehow am chosen; I hear about the commercial but never see it myself; Cherie on the road a lot.

Almost biking weather!; realize winter has been bringing me down; planning my future a bit more; think about riding with Chris; want to see Sean; talk with Amy in The Cage; very tired lately (from lack of sleep).

We left and got a good start. [The rest is unreadble, due to a bookmarker that got in the way while photo-copying]

Yumi and I bicker during morning walk up to campus; she’s mad I can’t spend more time with her; check on Yuka’s flights; new Japanese teacher at Cabrillo; Shinya brings Yuka from airport; Yumi completely surprised.

Reading “The Names”; Mom having trouble visualizing her future; Jim making her feel guilty; Meggin calls while I’m napping; I’m out of it; she’s depressed, and neither of us knows what to do; try making a list of ‘wants’.
