    13/03/2019 Duration: 17min

Hey Y'all!! Here is my weekly podcast. I wanted to riff off a conversation I had with Vanessa Cronin on The Empowered Teaching Podcast about why it is important for teachers to truly shine. Having been in the classroom for the better part of a decade my biggest regret is how often I played small and sold myself short. I realize now that the best way for my students to shine is to see me shine everyday no matter what the circumstances. My goal is to shine to the best of what I have each day. 11/03/2019 Duration: 52min

On this episode podcast Kyle is joined by Bethany Younkers. We got connect to Bethany through one of our previous guests CJ Reynolds. "Students will always give you a window in... and will test you to see you care and if you'll stick around." This is the key to connection and relationships in the classroom according to Bethany. We had an incredible talk about how at times we've both missed the 'windows' our students have given us because we didn't recognize their stories. Bethany teaches at an all boys school in Philly and we discussed how she sets expectations and boundaries with her boys as well as how she gains cultural awareness of the reality her students live in. Bethany (IG: @polkadotsofgratitude and polkadotsofgratitude.com) is a believer in the power of gratitude as much as we are and even against the will of teenage boys makes them "present to their blessings." Sprinkle in a bit of international travel and some talk on eating vegan and you have the recipe for a tremendous podcast! If you'd like t

  • Value Adds Value #1: Paul France

    04/03/2019 Duration: 51min

On this episode of the podcast we have a conversation about what a more humanized classroom would look like with Paul France. Paul's first piece of advise, "You have to have a belief in other people's truth." Paul is an openly gay teacher and advocate for marginalized groups whose work we came across when he wrote an article about how white male teachers can be better allies (paulemerich.com/2018/08/06/how-ca…-people-of-color/). This sparked a conversation about how people who have privilege can be better allies to people who do not and he started out by explaining how we must accept that other people have a different truth than our own, but we must understand that both truths are valid. To us this means we must as people refrain from trying to validate our own truths by undermining or discrediting the truths of others. Paul gives his 5 As for being a better ally to marginalized groups: Awareness, Acceptance, Amplification, Advocacy, Accountability And when asked what advocacy looks like he stated the imp

  • #152: A Conversation w/ Naomi O'brien

    24/02/2019 Duration: 38min

What does it take to create cultural relevancy for students? If you were Naomi O'Brien growing up it was simply to have a teacher ask you about who you are and what you like. On this episode Naomi (Instagram: @readlikearockstar) talks about how her educational experience impact how she strives to connect with her early elementary students today. When asked what the one thing every student should be taught she responded with the ability to know what they need and how to ask for it. And she strives to do that with her kids and works with them on the language needed to ask for things. We also had the chance to chat how to put language to social justice issues for both students and teachers. Naomi says that we often don't talk about difficult issues because we don't have the language or don't know how to ask the right questions, so with her students she often focuses on what justice would 'look like' in certain fictional and literal situations. We wrapped up the conversation with practical ways to build better

  • #151: Podcasting Fears and Why We Don't Edit

    20/02/2019 Duration: 24min

  • #150: A Conversation w/ Katie From Teaching On Tables

    18/02/2019 Duration: 51min

What exactly does it mean to teach on tables?! Lucky for you Katie (@teachingontables) joined us on the podcast to describe her unique brand of art, theater, and taking that has become her calling card! During this conversation Katie tells the story of how a theater major at Notre Dame turned into her engaging style of teaching with help from the folks over at The Ron Clark Academy. Katie shares our belief that as teachers we are the #1 determinants of our students success and future opportunities and although her presentation may be over the top her practice is rooted in a simple principle--listen. Katie has developed her own voice as a teacher and gives you the advice that she used to do so during this episode. Although her dancing and singing may seem like a novelty they are far from it. The central tenant of her teaching lies in the idea that students expect the unexpected in her class. Not only does this allow for her to take risks in her teaching, but it provides the space kids need to develop their
