Are there complimentary sources which help shed further light on this question? Are the sources consistent in presenting historical facts? • The Relationship between the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Era - CHS 117

    06/06/2019 Duration: 20min

What is the relationship between the Middle Ages (ca. 600-1500) and the Early Modern Era (ca. 1500-1700)? In this episode, we review this relationship between these two important eras of history for the Catholic Church. We note the general observation made by medievalists and early modern historians such as Heiko Obermann, David Steinmetz and others who have argued that a knowledge of the Late Middle Ages (i.e., 1300-1500) is indispensable for a clear comprehension of the Early Modern Era. In most histories of the sixteenth century, scholars now devote an introductory chapter or two to the Late Middle Ages as the backdrop for understanding the religious events of that period. Join us this week, as we discuss the importance of understanding the medieval context for the Reformations of the sixteenth century.   To comment on this show or provide feedback, please navigate to https://catholicheritageshow.com/episode117 The Catholic Heritage is devoted to helping Catholic Christians better understand the history, t

  • How did Aquinas Study the Bible? pt 2 - CHS 115

    31/05/2019 Duration: 12min

How did Thomas Aquinas (ca. 1225-1274) study the Bible? In this our second episode of a two-part series on Aquinas we argue that the angelic doctor paid careful attention to the various facets of the biblical text as well as its commentarial tradition. What earlier Christian authors said about the Bible, Aquinas believed, was worthy of careful consideration. • The Canon of Scripture and the Authority of the Church - CHS 113

    29/05/2019 Duration: 25min

What is the relationship between the canon and the authority of the Church? In this episode, we reiterate the central thesis of our episodes on the canon of Scripture, namely, that a belief in Scripture’s authority necessitates a high view of the Church’s authority. We show that without the efforts of early Christian bishops, councils and popes, the canon of Scripture would not exist today. In other words, a list of authoritative books, which we call the Bible would not exist. If the Church has the authority to pass an authoritative list of books, it follows that for the followers of Christ the Church also has the authority to determine the meaning of those books. Join us this week, as we probe the relationship between Scripture and the Church’s authority.   To comment on this show or provide feedback, please navigate to https://catholicheritageshow.com/episode113 The Catholic Heritage is devoted to helping Catholic Christians better understand the history, teachings and culture of their Catholic faith so tha

  • Interpreting from Major Motifs - Gnostic Character of Recent Criticism of Pope Francis - CHS 112

    27/05/2019 Duration: 23min

Recent English-speaking critics of Pope Francis have resorted to Gnostic ways of interpreting the pontiff’s statements. In this episode, we talk about the use of major motifs or themes these critics deploy in reading Francis’ statements, both written and oral. We show that this way of interpreting has close affinities to Gnostic interpretations of the New Testament. In contrast to the ways the Church Fathers interpreted the Scriptures, the Gnostics focused on a handful of key notions as a means to interpreting the sacred text. Join us this week, as we compare Gnostic ways of reading with the ones deployed by Francis’ critics.   To comment on this show or provide feedback, please navigate to https://catholicheritageshow.com/episode112 The Catholic Heritage is devoted to helping Catholic Christians better understand the history, teachings and culture of their Catholic faith so that they can better love and serve Christ, the Church and their neighbors. • How Athanasius of Alexandria's Canonical List of Scripture Illustrates Church Authority - CHS ae 03

    24/05/2019 Duration: 15min

How does one understand the significance of Athanasius’ canon of Scripture (ca. 367)? In this bonus app-exclusive episode, we discuss the distinct ecclesial character of this action in disseminating a list of canonical scriptures (i.e., authoritative books which can be read in the Eucharistic liturgy). Athanasius’ action in sending out a canonical list of Scripture reveals not only a late date for the canonization of the Scriptures but also the exercise of Church authority in the determination of the canon of Scripture.

  • Martin Luther's Opposition to the Anabaptists on Infant Baptism - Protestant Agreements and Differences Series - CHS 111

    23/05/2019 Duration: 21min

Some Protestant Christians claim that despite their numerous differences, most Protestant Christians agree about the essentials of the Christian faith, especially those teachings set forth during the Protestant Reformation, namely, the doctrine of salvation by faith alone and the final authority of scripture alone. In this episode, we evaluate this claim by discussing the early conflict between the supporters of Martin Luther (1483-1546) and the Anabaptists over the validity of infant baptism and its bearing on the doctrine of salvation. We note that both groups were fiercely opposed to the other’s teaching and practices surrounding this heavily debated question. Identifying intra-Protestant differences is critical for establishing authentic ecumenical relations between Protestant and Catholic Christians. Join us this week as we further explore some of the key differences between non-Catholic Western Christians.   To comment on this show or provide feedback, please navigate to https://catholicheritageshow.com
