Hash It Out returns with an episode dedicated to thinking critically about sexuality education, abortion access, and how different populations can get the information they deserve. For non-normative populations, like queer people or trans folk, it can be hard to get medically accurate information. Doctors are legally required to provide false information to patients seeking abortions and most schools don’t mandate sexuality education at all. Courtney and Judith discuss these issues and also provide suggestions for places to find resources, which you can also find in the recommended reading document below. This week’s episode of Hash it Out, “Culture is Not a Costume,” will help you navigate some of the tricky issues associated with the upcoming Halloween holiday (and all of the Pocahottie and sombrero costumes that come along with it.) Cultural appropriation is usually treated as a 101-level topic and the conversation ends there. There’s plenty of reading you can do on what defines appropriation and who can and can’t wear certain items or partake in certain rituals. But Judith and Courtney tackle the topic from a different angle, taking it beyond the 101 course and into a more nuanced discussion. Can you appropriate cultures by eating certain foods? Are fashion and art exempt from cultural appropriation? What’s even that harmful about wearing a keffiyeh, posing in a wheelchair, or tacking a bindi to your forehead for a photoshoot? We talk a lot about how health care and reproductive justice are connected and how doctors can prevent or allow people to access the care they want or need. Most often, the focus is on abortion. But what about the other types of reproductive justice, like access to gender confirming therapies, the right to determine your care, and informed consent?
