My grandmother had to be very thrifty in order to make ends meet.  Even things as little as buttons and shoelaces were important in daily life and, therefore, they needed to be cared for.

The cookies smelled so good! Sure, Dad said not to touch them, and they were placed in a cookie jar, but they were freshly baked and they were chocolate chip cookies. And they smelled so good! And ... oh, yeah ... Dad left the house for awhile, leaving two boys alone with a cookie jar full of cookies. What do you think happened?

As we look around at our world, sometimes it appears everything is falling apart.
