Many fans of the film were surprised to discover it was based on a novel, Caging Skies, by Christine Leunens, but we found out the hard way that the film is a shocking departure from this book, which is a twisted story of the toxic relationship between captor and captive, exploring themes of toxic masculinity and utter despair.
