  • Real Religion – How Wealth Should Be Used

    20/03/2020 Duration: 35min

In this talk we examine the abuse of wealth. This was taking place in the churches James addressed. There was a notable economic diversity among the churches, but that led at times to oppression of the poor by the rich. The poor were denied basic pay by the rich. And this was taking place in the church. Church is the very place where grace, generosity and humility is to be enjoyed! Something was deeply wrong: and James goes right to the heart of the problem. However in the Christian gospel Jesus gave up his riches and became poor, so that we though poor could be given riches beyond belief. We think about practical steps we can take (and are already taking) as a church to live out the grace of Jesus. Main text: James 5:1-6 Preacher: David Varney

  • Faith without works is dead

    05/02/2020 Duration: 41min

‘What good is it if someone says they have faith but does not have works?’ Real Religion is more than ascent to a set of beliefs. According to James, fake religion is only concerned with inner beliefs and not outward actions. This kind of religion is dead – powerless and pointless. Instead Real Religion is immediately interested in the life and actions of a person who follows Jesus. Real Religion is deeply practical. It is gritty and this-worldly; extending care and mercy especially to the materially poor. In this sermon we see how: Fake religion divorces faith from works Real religion marries faith and works Main text – James 2:14-26 Preacher – David Varney, pastor Foundation Church Belfast.
