Kyle Thiermann is a professional surfer, podcaster, and filmmaker from California. He creates gonzo-style mini-documentaries about current issues happening all over the world. These are conversations with fascinating people he meets along the way.

    ITunes Stitcher In 2011, Dollar paddled into the biggest wave ever at Mavericks. At 55-feet, it earned him the XXL “Biggest Paddle” wave. In 2012, he trumped his own record by paddling into a 62-foot wave at the Cortes Bank, earning him the XXL award for not only “Biggest Paddle” wave, but simply “Biggest Wave,” the first time a paddle in surfer had bested the world’s best tow-in crews. He finished the Mavericks Invitational that year in sixth place, a huge honor.  And all that time, he was never a professional surfer. Dollar has worked in the surf industry for ten years, and also as a broker for Dollar Brokerage, handling 160 accounts. He became a Reef sales rep in 2010, in the midst of his rise to big wave stardom. Dollar lives with his wife and son in Santa Cruz.     ITunes Stitcher Dr. Susy Honig (@saltywind) is an aquatic ecosystem ecologist and postdoctoral science education fellow at UC Santa Cruz. Her research focuses on the natural and non-natural links between land and sea, and she has researched the effect of nutrient inputs in local Santa Cruz streams, local rocky intertidal communities, and coral reefs in the remote Pacific. She is an Aptos native and first developed a love for ocean science as a child playing in the waves as a junior lifeguard. She then pursued marine science at the University of California Santa Barbara, where she earned her bachelor's degree in Aquatic Biology and helped monitor the health of kelp forests in the Santa Barbara Channel as a research scuba diver. Susy returned to Santa Cruz to complete her doctorate in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology in Professor Don Croll and Bernie Tershy's lab at UC Santa Cruz, where she studied the influence of seabird guano on coral reef ecosystems. He worked for the Vanguard international news documentary investigative reporting show on Current TV beginning in 2005. In 2010, he became a producer and correspondent for CNN until he was laid off in 2012 after CNN abolished their investigative news departments. Larsen was born in Santa Cruz, California. He graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz with a degree in political science and a master's degree in public policy from the Harvard Kennedy School, where he was awarded a fellowship from the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy.
