There was music, there was food, there was glamour in abundance and there was new managing director, Russell Currie, who kindly gave us a huge amount of his time despite being under pressure to make a presentation and shake the hand of everyone in attendance. Oh, and there was a helicopter. The photographs accompanying this programme were taken on the day, just off Mallorca’s spectacular north coast.

    Howard Rice’s original intention was to sail a tiny boat around Tierra del Fuego. His plans have now increased in scope and he’ll be taking his home built SCAMP, Southern Cross, on a series of voyages in various seas, lakes and rivers around the world, connecting with schools as he goes. It is a wonderful and inspiration project worthy of everyone’s attention. But the first of the voyages ended prematurely and could easily have cost Howard his life. It certainly very nearly cost him his vessel. In fact, were it not for a remarkable chance encounter, Southern Cross might never have returned. This is a story of courage, kindness and coincidence. This is amazing.

    Chris DiCroce’s first novel, Burning Man, begins in Nashville but it's almost inevitable that central character, Dash Nelson, should end up on a boat and in danger. It is exactly a year since we first spoke to Chris and his wife, Melody. They were the first Boat Radio interviewees, and the resulting recording was used as our demo track. Chris is a singer-songwriter turned writer and novelist. Melody is a copy editor and proof reader. Along with dog, Jett, they live aboard Vacilando – a 1984 Cal 35. When we last spoke, Chris and Melody were based in St. Petersburg, Florida. But the view from the cockpit is very different today. They’ve headed south, visiting Cuba, Mexico and Belize, and now they’re in Guatemala.
