Ohio State had little trouble dispatching Arkansas State in a 45-12 win and even though the Buckeyes still had some hiccups and didn’t cover the spread, things weren’t too far off from what we expected out of Saturday’s game. C.J. Stroud, Marvin Harrison Jr., and TreVeyon Henderson were explosive on the offensive side of the ball. The linebackers and defensive line are still playing well, and the defense is forcing field goals instead of allowing touchdowns. Although the Buckeyes need to clean up the penalties and perhaps start forcing a few turnovers, things are on schedule. We look into the scores and stats of Ohio State’s win. Of course, we checked in to see how our predictions and our picks to click fared, and we are seemingly better on the offensive side than the defensive side so far this season. Ohio State’s defensive ends aren’t putting up big numbers even when they’re playing well, so we’re seeing some patterns emerge in the statistical breakdowns of the games. As Megan and Meredith discussed on this week’s episode, we learned a lot about the Buckeyes following their top-five matchup against Notre Dame Saturday — probably more than we would have if the Buckeyes had played a Group of Five opponent, at least.  But it was an exciting weekend even beyond Ohio State’s game. We saw a preponderance of defense in Iowa vs. South Dakota State and the exact opposite in North Carolina vs. Appalachian State. The season is officially underway! Ohio State may have had the offense stuck in neutral for much of the opening game against the Fighting Irish, but — as usual — there’s always “run the dang ball” on which to fall back. The Jaxon Smith-Njigba injury certainly affected Ryan Day’s offense, Jim Knowles’ defense (after the first play) worked about as well as most OSU fans hoped, and the Buckeyes were able to be physical in the run game when it mattered most. We break down the Buckeyes’ 21-10 win over the Notre Dame, including what went well, what didn’t work as well as expected, and who the top performers were.
