Are You Movie Mad?

VIN DIESEL, BABY! Andrew has watched this a bunch of times in lockdown because it’s the most recent Vin flick, Johnny never saw it. Will Guy Pearce’s ever-changing accents add to the experience, or the action scene definitely meant to be in London that looks nothing like anything ever? Will cinema ever matter again? What is pandemic brain cinema anyway?

It’s a relaxing day backstage at the Bluebird Cafe, a perfect time to catch up with the events in Nashville, like Deacon’s guitar playing future, Juliette’s Conan appearance and the arrival of Oliver Hudson to the show. Johnny has lots of show notes, but Andrew is more interested in declaring Scarlett the next Dolly Parton, and he has the receipts.

Life, oh life, oh life, doo doot doot doo. Johnny mentioned he also hadn’t seen the Eddie Murphy/Martin Lawrence movie ‘Life’ and since it is streaming, unlike a lot of films, Andrew has allowed an entire episode surrounding a film he once rented as a kid, expecting a wild comedy, and rewound and returned before the first hour was up. Will the last hour make up for Baby Andrew’s experiences?

Andrew and Johnny are still backstage in Nashville, starting the second season of the show, dealing with comas, pregnancies, proposals, break-ups and people who have been LEFTOVERED since they decided to hurt Scarlett. For some reason there’s plenty of Austin Powers references too, because that’s the show we make now. 11 months into lockdown.

Welcome to the podcast, Jim Carrey. Johnny mentioned he hasn’t seen the infamous mid-90s black comedy, and Andrew, the man that he is, loves The Cable Guy so much and wants to hold Johnny’s hand through his first time. We break down the career of Ben Stiller, Jim Carrey’s golden run and, of course, Matthew Broderick’s rap sheet.

Johnny compiles the multi-disc soundtrack releases for the TV show and the two go track-by-track discussing the songs, context in the show, and have a lot of fun in this break between seasons.

A week off and refreshed, it’s time to take a look at Jodie Foster’s Death Wish drama, with discussions on Jared Leto and Rami Malek in The Little Things, what your vigilante name would be and Foster’s Erica Bain and her best friend Gunny. This is a silly silly episode with some strong language.

THE SEASON FINALE IS HERE! There’s a lot of plots ramping up, but Deacon is spending his time making crazy noises upon the discovery of a daughter he barely knew. People come in through the back way, the Bluebird returns to the show, drinks, deaths and Daddys come home to roost. Where are we at, so deep into lockdown, remembering the times we could hang out, singing and dealing with potential indictments.

It’s the penultimate episode of season 1, Johnny is excited about all the moving and shaking in the world of Nashville, and Andrew is mostly concerned with protecting Scarlett from all the bad people out there trying to hurt her, even accidentally, for their own gain. Will the return of Dante change anything? Will we run the Jolene joke into the ground? Will Big Deac Energy ever stop working on us?

It’s time to pitch the worst podcast in the world, a guaranteed flop, this show won’t last the night! It’s Mel Brooks’ masterpiece of comedy satire, and NOT the Broadway musical or film adaptation of the Broadway musical, despite Johnny’s best efforts. We’re going back to the source, taking a fine sip of Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder, and pitching a Star Wars musical that’ll make big bucks for those behind the show, and nobody else.

Deacon gives away his dog. I guess there are other storylines in this week’s episode, but Andrew gets significantly hung up on Deacon giving Sue away so suddenly. What is Nashville without the iconic Deacon/Sue partnership of the past few weeks? Johnny feels like Will Lexington and Scarlett are gonna be the BFFs of the year, and can’t seem to get Andrew’s head around who is biologically related to whom.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! We have had it with these monkey-fighting movies on this Monday-to-Friday podcast. Johnny hasn’t seen Snakes On A Plane, so for very little reason it’s time to revisit the 2006 internet phenomenon that never quite found footing in the real world. Also, a DVD Leaflet advertisement game, and pitches for further Snake-ventures!

It’s our longest episode, because there’s stuff to get to with the world of Country Music in Nashville. Juliette is succumbing to Dante’s peak, and it throws Deacon, Jolene and the whole industry into a tailspin. Meanwhile, Johnny’s love for new character Will Lexington continues to confuse Andrew, and has made it so Johnny can no longer remember the term ‘Roadie’, nor the Showtime hit TV show Roadies.

Here we go, the one everyone’s been demanding. Andrew discovered that Universal has had the Cannes Cut of the iconic sci-fi apocalypse comedy satire on iTunes for a while, and as the Arrow blu ray release comes closer, it’s time to show Johnny not only Southland Tales, but the 160 minute thicker version, with less exposition and more comic asides. Johnny is not on board, but Andrew’s new twin Aaron seems happy with the situation, and offers an option to make the world end.

It’s a new year for the podcast, and the same season for Nashville. We bounce between New York and the titular town to discover Dante’s side-hustle with the Barnes ladies, Avery’s new gig, Will/Ted Lexington’s take on dealing with death, and how many people call Lamar ‘Daddy’ when he’s unconscious.

The new Pixar pic brings the joys of death, existential dread and meaninglessness to children! Johnny has waited to watch this for the podcast, but Andrew has taken a trip through the soul already, what will be the end result, and will anything matter after all of this? Happy 2021!

It’s Sky Cinema release day for Cats in the UK and Johnny is all fur-ious that he’s not watching it with Andrew, and Andrew wishes he could paws life for the 2 hours it takes to sit through Tom Hooper’s Cats. Come join the experience through heaven or hell or heavyside layer, no matter your thoughts on the musical, you can all understand what listening to a tortured soul sounds like. The final film of 2020 is a Spike Jonze family picture, adapted from a short picture book, somehow featuring arm rips and throwing friends into other friends. What a perfect film to remind you of the mayhem of Christmas past, as we sit alone in our pandemic world, feeling every emotion and waiting for something good to come. Max and the Wild Things are 2020, and Andrew and Johnny and friends Jim Broadbent and Paul Giamatti ease the Christmas fear for another season.

Now on Sky Movies! MERRY CHRISTMAS! Hope you’re ready to lose Whamageddon, because we’re watching the Paul Feig movie based on a George Michael (and Wham) song with a twist you definitely will see coming. Andrew and Johnny sit down to appreciate Christmas in London, a film that’s better than one would imagine, and play trivia games for the festive season. Come watch along with us.
