Are You Movie Mad?

Finding some fun after an intense month, Johnny and Andrew let off steam with an under-discussed Kevin Smith film, and try to work out who they would cast in the leads a decade on.

Johnny ends Stephen King month with one of his all-time favourite films, just so Andrew can destroy everything in his path. But not before a discussion of the Avengers: Endgame trailer, and thoughts on book-to-film adaptations as a whole.

Bark bark bark goes the rabid dog, and snore snore snore go the podcast hosts, as they try to find anything to grab hold of watching this old-school Stephen King film adaptation.

Stephen King month hits Kathy Bates territory with the ‘other’ King adaptation she starred in. Johnny shares stories of actually reading the book, and Andrew discusses filmmaking in a deeply useless way. Plus jokes.

Johnny takes the reigns with Stephen King month, and Netflix’s dark, gory horror. Cue discussion of film nasty violence, awkward interviews and pitching a second film from another perspective.

Studio Ghibli month ends with a guest appearance from Dick Cheney and a watch of a Christian Bale film about wars and heart transplants. But also a discussion on Fozzie Bear as a voice actor.

Ghibli month breaks through to the final run with a film where Michael Keaton plays a pilot pig. And we’re all accepting this as the world we live in now.

Reminiscing on other adventures, Andrew and Johnny continue Ghibli month with a ‘romantic drama’ that is more drama and less anything.

Ghibli month does not begin with the promised Kiki’s Delivery Service and Andrew is heartbroken, but not as much as when he and Johnny venture forth to watch the replacement film, about a castle, a castle in the sky.

Documentary January concludes with a 3D feature, full of fast bikes, fun folks and, as with all good documentaries, a body count. Strap in and rev up for a finale and a half.

It’s been a while since we watched American Splendor but that doesn’t mean we can’t shoe-horn in a follow-up in a month devoted to documentaries. Johnny spends the time believing R. Crumb is dead all along, and Andrew wonders as ever why he even does this.

Welcome Michael Moore to doc month, the duo watch his first feature and examine Flint, Michigan as a tourist location, a home of some of the worst human atrocities in the western hemisphere and a sheriff’s deputy that seems to be the Brundlefly of Lionel Ritchie and Paulie from the Rocky franchise.

Andrew takes Johnny on a comedic journey through an old joke that barely has a punch-line in an episode full of them. Take heed when Ringo Starr drops by to chat, and both hosts attempt to tell their own versions of The Aristocrats.

Documentary January begins with 2 players fighting for dominance, and Johnny uses the c-word a lot when discussing one Billy Mitchell. It’s boss-level insane here.

Johnny and Andrew look back over the last year of the podcast, the highs and the lows, and Johnny can’t stop talking about that trip to Nashville he took. So Andrew naturally annoys him constantly over it.

A long talk about Kevin Smith and Andrew remembers his teen years before watching the so-far-final in the franchise movie.

To cleanse the soul from the previous film, Andrew shows Johnny what insanity is in the form of Belgian animation and origin of film-quiz-winning team name A Town Called Panic.

Andrew brings up a film that genuinely makes him cry in an effort to turn Johnny into a sniveling mess, Johnny is prepared for a weird, creepy, Tim Burton style movie instead.

Escaping the clutches of the usual recording studio, Andrew and Johnny sit down with the director of upcoming action thriller Nightshooters to talk phoned-in choreography, the C-word and making audiences react.
