Tonight, the Utah Lyric Opera presents a special performance of "Singing the Stories of America," a music and spoken-word production written and directed by Elizabeth Hansen. Set in the style of an old-time radio variety show, a combination of artfully-arranged vocal numbers and expertly-performed stories and vignettes come together to paint a picture of patriotism and nostalgia. Show veterans Dr. Donna Fairbanks and Dr. Hilary Demske return to our studio to perform two very-special selections from Czech composer Leos Janacek. They recently performed their repertoire to standing ovations in Brno, Janacek's hometown in the Czech Republic. Dr Fairbanks is Chair of the Department of Music at Utah Valley University and holds degrees from the University of Arizona, Eastman School of Music, and Brigham Young University. Dr Demske is Associate Professor and Director of Piano Studies at Utah Valley Univeristy. She is a Steinway Artist and holds degrees from the University of Michigan, the Julliard School, and the Peabody Conservatory of Music. Rhonda rider is a musician just as comfortable in a concert hall in front of thousands as she is in the great outdoors. Artist-in-Residence at both Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest National Parks, her cello recordings have been nominated for Grammy awards and cited as Critic's Choice in both the New York Times and the Boston Globe. She currently serves as the Chair of Strings and on cello faculty for the Boston Conservatory at Berkelee and Boston University. Today she shares a collection of never-before-recorded pieces by living composers, written specifically for the Petrified Forest National Park. She also chats with Steve about her "indestructible cello," creating never-before-heard cello sounds, and keeping company with the wildlife during her residency. A full-time musician, Parker most recently spoke at Tedx in Idaho Falls, performed opening for Shark Tank's Daymond John at IZEAFEST in Orlando, Florida, and starred in a McDonald's television commercial showcasing his talent for unorthodox beats. Los Hermanos de los Andes is a folk group with a 27-year history. They've performed at various venues throughout the state of Utah, at Latin festivals, and for large-scale productions with sets, choirs, and dancers. The group's purpose is to share their rich musical heritage with authentic ethnic instruments dating back to the original Inca civilization. Inviting listeners to close their eyes and let their imagination take them to the majestic Andes mountains, in-between chatting wtih Steve about some of their incredible performances and instruments. A native of Los Angeles, Norman Krieger is one of the most acclaimed pianists of his generation and is highly regarded as an artist of depth, sensitivity and virtuosic flair. In fall 2016 he joined the faculty of the distinguished Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. Currently in town as a special guest of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation, Mr. Krieger is known for his master classes, storytelling, and remarkable skill as a musician. Mr. Krieger regularly appears with the major orchestras of North America, among them the New York, Los Angeles, Rochester Philharmonics, the Minnesota Orchestra, Boston Pops Orchestra, as well as Mexico’s Orquesta Filarmónica de la Ciudad de México and Orquesta Sinfónica de Xalapa. He has performed quite literally all over the world, and has released four solo album recordings as well as a number of chamber music collaborations. The Philharmonia Quartett of Berlin, Germany has been described as "Four of the best" by the London Press. They have toured all over Europe, North and South America and Asia, and played for Pope Benedict XVI and the Spanish Royal Family. In addition to performing their sought-after concerts they have released and albums and won multiple competitions including the Argentine Critic Prize in Buenos Aires. Today, two of the four sit with Steven Kapp Perry for an exclusive interview. An Rogaire Dubh (The Black Rogue) is group that plays traditional Irish music on traditional Irish instruments, all for the love of the culture and the craft. Founded by Joe Perry, Pipe Major of the Thomas Cordner Pipe Band, the musicians of An Rogaire Dubh play concerts, festivals and private events all over the Utah and Salt Lake Counties. A pianist with "discipline and poetry at his fingertips" \[Bachtrack], Chi Ho Han most recently completed and ranked in the 2016 Queen Elizabeth International Music Competition in Brussels, but has won awards and competitions all over the world, all throughout his career. He's currently a postgraduate student at the University for Music, Theater and Media in Hannover Germany. Tonight Chi Ho plays beautiful music, some of which from his brand new album "Chopin and Schumann: Piano Works", and chats with Steve about festivals, practicing, and the toy pianos of childhood. In the mid 1800's, author Henri Murger wrote a collection of loosely-related short stories that he published as Scene de la vie de Boheme. Literary enthusiasts were fond of the book but it didn't become truly popular until a local playwright was asked to adapt part of the text for the stage. Fifty years later, Giacomo Puccini's operatic version of the story premiered in Turin at the Teatro Regio as: La Boheme. Westminster Opera Studio in Salt Lake City recently finished a run of La Boheme, and now they visit us in our studio to sing some of the most iconic and beloved selections from this incredible opera under the direction of David Schmidt.
