Highway 89 is a live performance and interview program that originates in BYUradios state-of-the-art recording studios in Provo, Utah. International, national and local artists from a wide-range of musical genres are featured. Classical installments of the show air each Tuesday.

    Show veterans Dr. Donna Fairbanks and Dr. Hilary Demske return to our studio to perform two very-special selections from Czech composer Leos Janacek. They recently performed their repertoire to standing ovations in Brno, Janacek's hometown in the Czech Republic. Dr Fairbanks is Chair of the Department of Music at Utah Valley University and holds degrees from the University of Arizona, Eastman School of Music, and Brigham Young University. Dr Demske is Associate Professor and Director of Piano Studies at Utah Valley Univeristy. She is a Steinway Artist and holds degrees from the University of Michigan, the Julliard School, and the Peabody Conservatory of Music.     Rhonda rider is a musician just as comfortable in a concert hall in front of thousands as she is in the great outdoors. Artist-in-Residence at both Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest National Parks, her cello recordings have been nominated for Grammy awards and cited as Critic's Choice in both the New York Times and the Boston Globe. She currently serves as the Chair of Strings and on cello faculty for the Boston Conservatory at Berkelee and Boston University. Today she shares a collection of never-before-recorded pieces by living composers, written specifically for the Petrified Forest National Park.     A native of Los Angeles, Norman Krieger is one of the most acclaimed pianists of his generation and is highly regarded as an artist of depth, sensitivity and virtuosic flair. In fall 2016 he joined the faculty of the distinguished Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. Currently in town as a special guest of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation, Mr. Krieger is known for his master classes, storytelling, and remarkable skill as a musician.     In the mid 1800's, author Henri Murger wrote a collection of loosely-related short stories that he published as Scene de la vie de Boheme. Literary enthusiasts were fond of the book but it didn't become truly popular until a local playwright was asked to adapt part of the text for the stage. Fifty years later, Giacomo Puccini's operatic version of the story premiered in Turin at the Teatro Regio as: La Boheme. Westminster Opera Studio in Salt Lake City recently finished a run of La Boheme, and now they visit us in our studio to sing some of the most iconic and beloved selections from this incredible opera under the direction of David Schmidt.
