Highway 89 is a live performance and interview program that originates in BYUradios state-of-the-art recording studios in Provo, Utah. International, national and local artists from a wide-range of musical genres are featured. Classical installments of the show air each Tuesday.

    Sometimes the best piano lessons happen without a piano! Steinway Artist and Assistant Professor of Piano at Florida State University, Joel Hastings is beloved by his students. Lessons have been known to happen over Vietnamese noodles or in the middle of the night, where the concepts and philosophies of music are discussed and nurtured.  In addition to his teaching prowess, Joel is the winner of the 8th International Web Concert Hall Competition and the International Bach Competition at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.   • Hasse Borup and Larry Gee

    This episode of Highway 89 is all about Beethoven! Hasse Borup and Larry Gee are Professors at the University Of Utah School Of Music and they’re here to share three Beethoven selections for violin and piano.  Professor Borup is a subject of the documentary 4/4 about his award-winning Coolidge Quartet, and an avid skier. And here to perform works of the great composer is Dr. Scott Holden: Director of Keyboard Studies at Brigham Young University’s School of Music.  Dr. Holden studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest as a Fulbright Scholar and holds music degrees from University of Michigan, the Manhattan School of Music and is a winner of the prestigious Horowitz Prize at the Julliard School.     Kalo Latu grew up with three pianos in her home because all eight kids in her family played! Nowadays, she maintains a piano studio in Utah and regularly performs with musical colleagues and friends like Marcel and Monika Bowman.  Marcel Bowman plays violin and is in the process of completing a PhD in Music Composition from the University of Utah. He has perfect pitch and has been married to his cellist wife Monika for 14 years.   • Josh Wright

    Josh Wright has quite the impressive list of piano accolades. Gold medalist in the 2010 Seattle International Piano competition, 1st prize winner of the 2010 American Protégé International Competition of Romantic Music, completer of a Master’s degree in Music at the University of Utah, and connoisseur of exploding pianos.  Well-known for a YouTube video in which he colorfully destroys a piano while effortlessly playing Chopin’s Etude in C# minor Opus 10 No. 4, Josh visited our studio to play a couple other Chopin selections, as well as a few hymns of his own arranging.   • The Willey Family Strings and Friends

    The Willey Family Strings is composed of the six Willey siblings and their music teacher mother. The whole family, plus some friends, join us in the studio today with host Bruce Seely to share pieces for all manner of strings.  The WFS have performed on Temple Square, at the “Strad for Lunch” concert series in New York City, and on the streets of Europe while on vacation.   • Serhiy Salov

    Today we’re putting the Steinway to work. Award-winning concert pianist Serhiy Salov is here and (considering the repertoire he’s brought) there’s a good chance all 88 keys are going to be played! First we’ll hear a few etudes of Franz Liszt followed by a transcription of the Liebestod from “Tristan und Isolde.” And end with a rousing rendition (Serhiy’s own transcription) of the Funeral March and Immolation Scene from Richard Wagner’s “Götterdämmerung.” Serhiy Salov is a First Grand Prize winner of The Montreal International Music Competition and a Silver Prize Winner of The Gina Bachauer International Artists Competition of Salt lake City. He’s recorded two CDs that have received wide acclaim: “Shostakovich’s Circle” and “The Sacred Spring of Slavs.” He’s been a featured soloist with the Berlin, Tokyo, Mexico and Montreal symphony orchestras, as well as the London Philharmonia Orchestra and the Royal philharmonic.   • Dmitri Levkovich

    Dmitri Levkovich is the product of a musical family. His grandmother is a prominent opera singer and educator; his father is a distinguished composer who received Ukraine’s highest musical honor in 1989; and his mother was his first piano instructor.  In 1990 Dmitri Levkovich’s family moved from Ukraine to Israel. Just five months later war broke out in Tel Aviv and the family set sights on immigrating to Canada. Nowadays Dmitri lives in New York City where he composes music and concertizes around the world. He’s won prizes in more than 20 piano competitions and has been a featured soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra, the China National Orchestra, the Gulbenkian Orchestra, the Louisiana Philharmonic, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, and Utah Symphony. Baritone Paul Otterstrom is a violinist and sings with the Mormon tabernacle choir. Tenor Karl Christiansen has been singing his whole life and was recently selected to sing Beethoven’s 9th symphony in a production at Weber State University.   • Fry Street Quartet

    Named for the street of their very first rehearsal space, the Fry Street Quartet is a nationally-acclaimed string quartet founded in Chicago and based in Hickory, North Carolina. Winners of the Millennium Grand Prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, they’ve performed in Carnegie Hall and internationally in places as far away as Sarajevo and Jerusalem.     Camille Saint-Saens was a French composer, organist, conductor, and pianist of the Romantic era, most well-known for his musical suite Carnival of the Animals. Today host Eric Glissmeyer chats with our special guests Kayson Brown and Larry Gee who showcase Saint-Saens on cello and piano.  Gee is the Piano Director at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, and Brown is the founder and director of the Lyceum Music Festival.   • Annie Takeuchi Lanzone

    Annie Takeuchi Lanzone is a classically-trained pianist with music degrees from Yale and Peabody. Once, towards the end of her Peabody days, her teacher turned to her and complimented her by saying “You know Annie, you could make a really nice living playing 20th century music in Manhattan.” But that wasn’t what she wanted to do at all! Something that she realized at that very moment! Two more advanced degrees later (in Cognitive Psychology from The Johns Hopkins University) she now spends her leisure time arranging and composing sacred music—often while in airports or travelling on buses. She’s also recorded several CDs including the “Instrument of Worship” series and a Christmas album.
