What a thrill it was to speak with Alison Weir for the second time about her new book on Anne Boleyn. The second in the new Six Tudor Queens series, this is historical fiction firmly rooted in research. She talks about such questions on Anne as, "was she really a feminist icon?" and "did she want the throne from the start?" and "was she really a threat to Katherine?" 16/03/2017 Duration: 40min

The Field of Cloth of Gold is one of the most famous foreign policy events in Henry VIII's reign, and it has stayed with us in part because of its amazing pageantry. Glenn Richardson is a professor of Early Modern History at St Mary's University Twickenham London, and wrote a great study of the Field in 2013. I interview him about the logistics with setting up the event, the tournament, and why we should study it. • Episode 068: Black Tudors

    18/02/2017 Duration: 22min

It's Black History Month in North America, and in honor of that, I am going out of the planned narrative of war with France, and doing this episode on the black Tudor experience. There have been black people in England since Roman times, and records show them in England throughout the middle ages. During the Age of Exploration, though, the population in London and England grew, so much so that Elizabeth I thought she might have to do something about it. She was unsuccessful, though. Interestingly, the slave trade didn't really take off in England until the mid 17th century, and under English law it was impossible to be a slave in Tudor England, so the experience of black Tudors is unique compared to those in Spain and Portugal during this time. In fact, the story is largely how similar to white Tudors their experience was. By that, I mean that their experience ran the spectrum from being poor servants to having important roles at court, and everything in the middle. You'd never know it based on the pop...

    08/12/2016 Duration: 20min

The 16th century saw an explosion of printing and the rise of literature in England, as well as the rest of Europe. The printing press made printing large numbers of pamphlets, broadsheets, newspapers, and books easy, resulting in things like the standardization of education, the spread of Protestant ideas, and of course, the rise in questionable risque materials flowing throughout courts in Europe.
