Gaea Star Crystal Radio Hour #172 is a summer-soaked song cycle featuring Mariam Massaro on baritone ukelele, guitars and vocals, Sondra Lewis on vocals and percussion, Dameron Midgett on mandolin, Craig Harris on congas and percussion and Bob Sherwood on piano. We begin with the rich, cyclical "Oh The Rains Have Come" and its companion piece "Oh The Sun Is Calling". "Lily The Locust Tree" is a sunny, folky, rollicking ode to Mariam's favorite Locust tree, driven by ukelele and steady conga work from Craig. As with the first duo of songs, this piece morphs into "I'm A Standing Tree" before yielding to the beautiful, mysterious "We're Going Down To The River", a song given an early-20th century art song vibe by Bob's circular and harmonically deep chord cycle. Following the break we return with the beautiful "Let's Climb Ever-Higher" and on today's final song, "Mosaic Cafe" we feature a very special guest, Bri Elizabeth on vocals."

This week’s spring paean is “Woody On The Tin Roof”, a pretty, shaded piece that evokes a late spring morning with Mariam’s evocative imagery. “Where Are We Going?” is a widescreen ballad built on a series of austere, classically-inflected movements. Common throughout the piece is an unsettled, undefined tonal center that represents the shifting, uncertain character of the title. We land in a pretty major motif for the conclusion as Mariam intersperses native flute passages with lovely improvised lyrics over Bob’s not-quite-comfortable piano figures.
