  • The Working Class Family Part 2: Pork Rinds And A 6 Pack!

    05/12/2016 Duration: 17min

We study more of the working class family through Roseanne and Dan Conner (not O'Connor's, sorry for the mistake!) How is this family similar to the Flintstones (see the last episode) and how are they different. Why is it important that working class folks got to watch this? I think a big reason is that it helped them feel understood, and helped them know that main stream America knew about their plight and their worries. Have a great week!   Primary Source: Season 1 Episode 2 of Roseanne, "We're In The Money" http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x24vwqf_roseanne-season-1-episode-2-we-re-in-the-money_shortfilms

What did it mean to be in this class, and what were some of the aspects of working class life in this era? I highly recommend watching a few others, here is the one I chose to talk about (in two parts) Part 1: https://vimeo.com/38460072 Part 2: https://vimeo.com/38460940 Enjoy!

    21/11/2016 Duration: 20min

I try to talk through the 2016 presidential election via an episode of, "Hey Arnold" titled, "Mr. Green Runs." The main thing to consider is the two types of politicians running and what American's sees in them! The link being used for this episode starts with another episode, and I had trouble fast forwarding, so be patient =) I love you all so much, hope this episode helps you out a little bit to make sense of what happened! http://www.toon.is/hey-arnold-5x02-helgas-masquerade-mr-green-runs-video_df7813f3b.html

  • The Electrical 20's

    23/10/2016 Duration: 19min

Woah! Electricity is so cool! Electricity had been around for a bit, but was still a growing industry with so much to explore and do. This film is an exploration into these possibilities: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9bXV0ac1S4 Use this source to also explore the fight for equality by women in the 1920's. Women were going to college but they still appeared to have very different experiences than men did. Would the woman in this film be able to easily obtain an electrical engineering degree? This film is so interesting because of all the new historical questions it brings up!

  • The Sabrina The Teenage Witch Trials

    17/10/2016 Duration: 27min

An episode of Sabrina the Teenage Witch (The Crucible) does a surprisingly accurate portrayal of the actual Salem Witch Trials! Check it out for yourself! http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3qspsj For further reading check this book out. It is a scholarly book on the event that delves deep into the lives of the individuals that lived through it! https://www.amazon.com/Salem-Possessed-Social-Origins-Witchcraft/dp/0674785266

    09/10/2016 Duration: 19min

This is a fun one! We discuss an episode of Arthur in which he breaks his families computer. • Grill Skills: Wendy's Contribution To 80's Culture

    03/10/2016 Duration: 22min

We tackle the famous 1980's Wendy's Training Video! Why the heck was it made and why was it important? Part of the answer can be found by studying the products of that time period! There is of course something interesting to be learned about race relations in the 80's as well, but that is something that an expert (not me) could explain but is an important issue to think about when watching. Hope you enjoy!   Primary Source Packet! What did people think houses would look like in the future back in the 50's. If you guessed plastic you'd be right!!! So much plastic! • 1995: The Start of User Friendly Internet

    22/08/2016 Duration: 20min

I found some engaging primary sources on the rise of the internet! The first is an instructional video from 1996 on how to use the internet as a kid for studying and playing games! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A81IwlDeV6c The second is a show from 1995 called, "Computer Chronicles" which played on PBS! There are several key indicators and predictions of what the internet was going to become! Here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XluovrUA6Bk The bottom line is this, the internet is incredibly cool and we need to appreciate where it came from so that we can appreciate it now!!!

  • The Swamp Fox: How Walt Disney Framed Revolutionary War Military History In 1959

    15/08/2016 Duration: 24min

The primary source used in this episode can be found here. It is highly recommended you watch this before or after the cast (It's homework but seriously, the homework is watching TV, c'mon guys!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOBwVJQi6_Y Although it isn't very historically accurate you can use this to understand how 1950's America chose to frame the Revolutionary War, and why that is important to understand that as current American's. We also get into issues of slavery, and how this episode chose to portray it, and what that says about America in the late 50's. This one will make your brain happy!

    07/08/2016 Duration: 24min

Here is Fernando Vargas's shit show of an entrance: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcgesmEz7iQ And here is Prince Naseem Hamed riding to the ring on a magic carpet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHxfVtId6_Q Finally I talk about the the pre-fight paegentry during the Hopkins Trinidad fight, which provides a great example of how Americans were attempting to cope with the 9/11 terrorist attacks just days after it happened (this fight took place on 9/15/01) What conclusions can you draw from the ceremony? Here it is (watch from the beginning to around 28 minutes in) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pAdJ2XzP4Ns
