I’ve been using Google’s Pixel 4 phone for almost a month now. I mean, really using it. With my SIM card in it and everything. Taking photos. Making calls. Playing Pokemon Go. Yes, still. And, you know, this isn’t my first Google phone. I had the Nexus One, the Nexus 4, and the Pixels 1 and 2. I usually get the XL but since I’ve switched back to the smaller iPhone, I decided to go with the smaller Pixel as well. Now, up front, I consider Google to be the most important company in the world. I love Apple’s products and their overall philosophy currently best aligns with mine. I think Amazon is transformative in the best and worst ways. Facebook is… a disaster that still brings the world together like nothing else. Apple started the year in privacy off with a colossal flex — Giant billboards across from January's CES show in Vegas saying what happens on your iPhone stays on your iPhone. It was privacy by design. Privacy as a civil right. That was quickly followed by a bug that could allow eavesdropping through FaceTime calls, an impressive array of new privacy protections including Sign in with Apple, HomeKit secure video and routers, increased tracking protection, private federated learning, and an anonymized new Find My network. Then, a scandal involving Siri and letting humans, contractors even, listen to and grade customer voice recordings for quality assurance. Back in 2017, Apple introduced Face ID on the iPhone X. It was the first real biometric facial geometry identification scanner. It couldn’t do multiple registrations like Touch ID, but what it did, it did even better — including and especially making authentication feel almost transparent. Now, Google has just released Face Unlock on the Pixel 4. The basic biometric facial geometry identification system is pretty much identical to Face ID. It adds some extra hardware and software for extra convenience, though, but some of that is region dependent and it’s also missing a key aspect of operational security. At least for now. I’ve been using the Apple Watch Series 5 since just after its introduction back in September I posted my initial review, complete with all the little technical details of how all the new stuff worked, just over a week later, after traveling back from Cupertino and reviewing three new iPhones as well along the way. It was a whirlwind. Now, I’ve gotten in a couple more trips, but also a lot of regular life. Just day in, day out, using the Series 5 as I’ve used every Apple Watch going back to the first.
