In this edition of RI w/ Tariq El-Amin , Tariq is joined by RI Culture Contributor Laylay Abdullah-Poulos (@Laylawriteslove on Twitter) to talk about a disturbing incident caught on video: a 50 year old man (David Bell) punching a 11 year old girl in the face, knocking her unconscious. Additional factors influencing the initial interpretation are the fact that the man is white, 6-5 and 250 lbs. The 11 year old girl is African American and looks to be outweighed by 150 lbs. In a society as race conscious as ours, these facts can't be overlooked, but they also can't determine right and wrong in and of themselves. How much of the picture can you trust? They discuss the specifics of the video and then move on to discuss the perception, formation, and denial of African American femininity in broader terms.
