November 4, 2012: "Amish Forgiveness: Lessons from Nickel Mines PA" - Dr. David Weaver- Zercher, Professor of American Religious History, Messiah College On October 2, 2006, a gunman entered an Old Order Amish schoolhouse near Lancaster, PA, shot 10 school girls, killing 5 of them, and then himself. The Amish community extended forgiveness toward the gunman and reconciliation to his family. Many members of the public were astonished by the generosity of spirit exhibited bythe Amish community. David Weaver-Zercher, coauthor of a book on the incident entitled "Amish Grace," will describe the event, providing background on it and the Amish, subjects of his studies. He will devote special attentionto the phenomenon of their profound forgiveness and what it can teach us.A 12:30 p.m. discussion session with our speaker will follow the second service.
