In an outcome that surprised most observers, the opposition candidate trumped the incumbent President and is all set to become the next President of the Republic of Maldives on November 17. In today’s episode we discuss the importance of Maldives in the South Asia region in general and in the Indian Ocean region in particular. And in the backdrop of the Presidential elections, we analyze its impact on India’s foreign policy. In due course, his administration has imposed economic sanctions on Iran by stopping the supply of dollar notes and has threatened to take it many notches higher. We dive deep to understand the ramifications on the Iranian society and also it's impact on Indian oil imports. In 2015 Indian government made a government to government deal with French government to purchase 36 Rafale fighter jets as a direct consequence of a renegotiation of an earlier bid floated by the Indian government. The government now is attacked by the opposition claiming that that fighter jets are being purchased at escalated prices.
