Manga Mavericks

A couple of months ago we did some massive podcasts to cover everything we did at Anime Expo, and now we’ve got to do the same for Anime NYC! We’re starting off with our long overdue roundup of all the news that came out of the con, which includes tons of licenses and some big announcements. We would’ve just attached the news to our con report, but that ended up being a five hours long conversation all by itself! So,  rather than make a five and a half hour podcast, we thought it’d be better to just split it up into two episodes... I didn’t just want to make this a news-only podcast, though, so we’re also throwing in some special bonuses. That’s right, we’re including excerpts from all three of the interviews we recorded at the con! We interviewed veteran Pokemon actresses Sarah Natochenny and Lisa Ortiz, and the father of Gundam himself - Yoshiyuki Tomino. On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Lum & Colton are joined by dakazu, darfox and Morgana from the Manga Machinations podcast to talk about Paru Itagaki's Beastars! Even only after reading the first two volumes released by Viz Media, we have a lot to dig into as we discuss different interesting facets of the world of Beastars, as well as its many various kinds of social commentary that we may or may not be able to relate to different real world experiences. We also give our first impressions of the anime based on the trailers (this was recorded before the anime made its premiere on Japanese TV) and wonder how well Itagaki's may or may not work in the transition from comic to animation. Saint Seiya is a shonen manga classic, a trailblazer that codified so many of the tropes and themes the genre embraces to this day. Its influence looms large in the history of manga, inspiring generations of artists and storytellers, but despite being popular in most of the rest of the world it’s been criminally overlooked in the U.S. After a botched attempt by DiC to make it big in America in the early aughts, Netflix has recently reintroduced Saint Seiya to a new generation of fans by making a shiny new CGI remake and adding the old show to their service with a brand new english dub! Thanks to these new projects and Seven Seas’ ongoing release of the Saintia Sho spinoff series, things are looking bright for the future of Saint Seiya in the States! Manga Mavericks @ Movies returns for the Fall movie season to cover all the new anime theatrical releases like One Piece: Stampede and the upcoming Konosuba movie! But before we can feast on the new, we’ve got to take care of some leftovers first. With I Want to Eat Your Pancreas finally out on blu-ray courtesy of Aniplex, now’s the perfect time to release our podcast we recorded on the film back in February after seeing its limited theatrical run. We actually recorded this episode a day after seeing Hunter x Hunter: The Last Mission, despite the eight month gap between releasing that and this. But man, what a whiplash in quality those two films were! It feels like mysterious forces have tried to both force us not to see the movie and then prevent us from releasing this podcast to the public, but just like with “The Ghibli Conspiracy,” we would not be deterred! That’s right, LumRanmaYasha and VlordGTZ went to the famous New York Comic Con, which means it’s time for another con report podcast! On Thursday, July 18th, a devastating fire burned down Kyoto Animation’s 1st Studio Building, claiming the lives of 35 people and hospitalizing 33 more. The human costs of this tragedy are unfathomable and the damage done to the studio is immeasurable. We stand together with KyoAni in their time of need, and want to do our part in spreading the word to fans on how to help the studio and its staff.
