A comedy gag manga taking place in the whacky town of Penguin Village centered around the adventures of chaotic and playful robot girl, Arale, and the rest of her cartoon pals! We discuss why Dr. Slump is one of the best gag manga ever made and how important and influential it is, despite it not having the same worldwide appeal outside of Japan like Dragon Ball did. N'joy! If you've enjoyed our discussions of Toriyama's comics lately, then head over to our Patreon to listen to our discussion of his Kintoki one-shot from 2010 with Randy from We Gotta Podcast! For a

We cover this collection of over 20 stories as exhaustively as possible, as Mike provides a lot of much needed context for the publication of a lot of them and pinpoint where Toriyama was in his career at the time of each of them, while Darren provides his perspective as a fellow artist and what mak

  • Manga Mavericks EP. 199: "Yona of the Dawn Q&A Extravaganza!!"

    20/05/2022 Duration: 02h36min

It may have taken a thousand years for the dragon warriors to reunite, but it only took us a couple of weeks! We still had so much more to explore in the world of Yona of the Dawn that we knew we had to return to answer the questions of the people! We’re once again rejoined by our own Happy Hungry Bunch, the Dragon Warriors of the Yona fandom; Marion, host of the Good Friends Anime Club, MHA Podcast, Shaman King Podcast, & The View From the Top!, Caitlin, editor for Anime Feminist and writer for Anime News Network and her own blog I Have a Heroine Problem, and Olive St. Sauver, writer for ButWhyTho?! We discuss several thoughtful questions curious about what we think sets Yona apart from other series, as well as the strengths of its titular protagonist and her growth throughout the story. In the process, we also interrogate questions that attempt to pedestalize Yona above other shojo manga as we challenge broad assumptions about what shojo manga are like and female protagonists should be that come from

  • Manga Mavericks EP. 198: "Yona of the Dawn"

    07/05/2022 Duration: 02h47min

On this episode of Manga Mavericks, Colton & Lum are joined once again by John from the Mercury Falcon Youtube channel, as well as first time guest and manga letterer, Phil Christie, to finally discuss one of Shotaro Ishinomori's many classic manga titles with Kamen Rider! One of two of the biggest long lasting tokusatsu hero franchises Ishinomori was responsible for creating about a man who, after being kidnapped by an evil organization known as Shocker and turned into a cyborg, dons the superhero persona of Kamen Rider, the defender of justice! Join us as we gush about Ishinomori's amazing art and rave about how fun the series was to read, but also how we feel the development of both the story and the characters fall a bit flat due to the comic needing to stay consistent with the then concurrently airing television series. Plus, John gives us a lot of history on the background and development of Kamen Rider, while Phil discusses his process while working on the lettering for the manga's release from Sev

  • Manga Mavericks EP. 195: "My Wandering Warrior Existence"

    06/04/2022 Duration: 01h45min

Nagata Kabi has explored her struggles with her physical and mental health in her previous memoirs, and now turns her attention to one of her biggest lifelong hurdles - love. Okazu founder and yuri scholar extraordinaire Erica Friedman joins us once again to discuss the latest chapter in Kabi’s ongoing and evolving memoir narrative, My Wandering Warrior Existence. Kabi uses the evocative image and anecdote of holding a wedding dress photo shoot as a springboard for exploring her desire to love and be loved, and her frustrations figuring out how to do that, including her experiences with online dating apps. We come to understand why she’s afraid to meet and form relationships with people, a response that stems from lingering issues about her own negative self-image, and a mistrust of other people in part caused by, CONTENT WARNING, a horrifically traumatic sexual assault she experienced as a child. Which, because of the particular descriptiveness and upsetting nature of the story, we encourage you to use yo

  • #Lum Squad #12: "Moo-ving Stories!"

    02/04/2022 Duration: 02h20min

Hello, darlings! Welcome back to #LumSquad, a podcast hosted by @LumRanmaYasha and @ProdTally devoted to the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura! We’re approaching the 2/3rds mark of the series’ volume count as we head into the first half of the 11th omnibus! Not only that, we’re entering one of the strongest periods for the series to date, and this volume in particular is filled with classic chapters that offered so much to talk about that we went on for two hours on just the first half alone! We had good reason to, however, as we discuss iconic stories like the “Blue-White Flames of Anger” arc and pivotal character-building chapters centered on Ataru and Lum’s relationship like “The Glove of Love and Conflict” and the deceptively emotional “Lum Becomes a Cow!” We also discuss the various hilarious chapters in-between, from the absurdly extravagant festive farce of Mendo’s Christmas Party to transformation antics gone unthinkably wrong! We also spend a lot of time discussing rec

  • Manga Mavericks EP. 194: My Alcoholic Escape From Reality

    28/03/2022 Duration: 01h45min

On this episode of Manga Mavericks, we're joined by founder of Okazu and yuri scholar, Erica Friedman, to once again revisit the works of Nagata Kabi with a discussion of another one of her self-reflective personal memoirs with My Alcoholic Escape From Reality! In which we visit Kabi during her time recovering in the hospital from severe pancreatitis due to her excessive drinking, as well chronicling through her artist's journey of deciding between working on either fiction or non-fiction. We discuss our thoughts on this book in particular and once again grapple with the difficult and complicated feelings we get from reading Kabi's works as pieces of entertainment, as well as her journey as an artist up to this point. This discussion was one we originally recorded around the time of its English release last year and uploaded exclusively on Patreon as a bonus podcast, but have made it available to the public in time for our upcoming episode on Kabi's newest memoir with My Wandering Warrior Existence, coming n

Click the link to take the survey and listen to the show for details! - https://s.surveyplanet.com/1m409qcf We all know manga is translated from japanese to english, but do you ever think about how the actual text is placed on the page, and who places it there? It doesn’t magically appear out of thin air - manga letterers are the folks responsible for putting the words you read on the page, which is not always an easy task, as lettering is more than just fitting words into a balloon, which is hard enough in of itself, but requires creativity and ingenuity to replicate the feel of the original text with creative solutions and hand-drawn effects, and even cleaning, touching up, and redrawing the original art! We’ve had several manga Letterers on the show to discuss their work before, but today is an especially red-letter day, because we’ve brought on a dream team, some of the best in the business, to spell out what a
