  • 173: How many hours a week do you study?

    21/03/2017 Duration: 11min

Selman asks: "How many hours a week do you study?" Episode Summary: Here's what I aim for: Focused study every weekday morning (1 hour), sporadic flashcards + listening during the day (0-60 mins), at least 3 speaking sessions a week (30-60 minutes) A rough total is around 5 hours study + 3 hours speaking Add on top of that watching TV, reading books, going out etc However, I often go for days without studying, and don't often stick to this schedule, but it tends to come back to this Remember that the success you have depends much more on the range of activities you do - speaking, reading etc. Are those considered studying? With my stronger languages like Spanish, Japanese etc, I don't study them any more, I just use them Resources Mentioned In Today's Episode: Core Study Time In Your Language Routine - a popular blog post on the topic of study and routine Start speaking today: I’d like to thank iTalki for supporting the show. Sonia asks: "What's the ideal language learning environment?" Episode Summary: There's no such thing as the ideal, or best, language learning environment Learning to speak a language is heavily linked to affective factors - your feelings and how you react to the environment around you You can be very analytical, and conclude that complete immersion after a minimum of study is the "most efficient way"... but only if you're happy in that environment When I look back on my language learning story, my success has been heavily linked to my environment (e.g. Spanish friends in London vs isolation in Japan) The question I ask myself most when I learn languages now is: "How does this language make sense in the context of the lifestyle that I enjoy?" (e.g. In Hong Kong I didn't have great working conditions, so my language learning suffered as a result) If your French is still low-level, you still have a lot of work to do.
