In Her Burning: A Surreal Diary

Erith and Calyx discover the pathway to a strange and haunting land, but the situation is desperate as Calyx's condition worsens. As the two embark into this sparkling, foreign place, they have a chance to discuss their respective lives and pasts. Their moment of connection is cut short however when the origin of the voice on Erith's recorder finally makes his appearance.

At last, Erith and Calyx come face to face with a Polished Elder who provides long awaited answers about the Volucris. However, their meeting is soon interrupted, and Erith and Calyx must flee for their lives. On the run, they discover a mysterious path only visible to the Polished.

Erith is shocked to find the mysterious voice reaching out to her during her waking hours. Before she can make headway with it, she reunites with Calyx who shares some disturbing news. In class, Erith and Calyx confront their Instructor, demanding answers. However, their moral stand is broken by a terrifying revelation.

More cryptic messages transmit through Erith's recorder, leaving her concerned about the changes Polishing is having on her psyche. Troubled by her progression, Erith confronts her Mother about what she's learned from the Instructor and discovers the hidden truth her Mother has been keeping from her all this time.

A haunting voice appears on Erith’s tape recorder, but does it convey a cautionary message or a threat? In the classroom, the Instructor informs Erith and Calyx why certain individuals are chosen to become Polished. Calyx confides in Erith that that he may be progressing into the next stage. Terrified, he seeks answers, as Erith discovers the new voice speaking to her in her sleep.

Days have passed since Erith’s surgery, though she doesn’t know how many. She has been diagnosed with Light Sickness and will be paired with another Polished, Calyx, to help her adjust to this unfamiliar state. The process isn’t easy however, as new sounds and sights begin to plague her senses, challenging her perception of what is real and illusionary.

Teenage Erith has been selected for Polishing, a bizarre and ritualistic surgery that will forever alter her vision by erasing the irises of her eyes. Because she fears the psychological changes rumored to affect the Polished, she has begun an audio diary to track her progress. She explains the Polishing rite and a bit about her society, including the mysterious entities known as the Volucris which only the Polished may see.
