  • jefferson jam: azouricious house and disco

    04/12/2016 Duration: 01h14min

Here’s bunch of tunes I purchased on Beatport and then mixed immediately last night.A friend, Eva, sent me a clip of Funky Green Dogs’ classic ‘Reach For Me’ via WhatsApp. I went to play it only realised I didn’t have it... So, off to Beatport, where, of course, I was distracted by new releases too.Part two of the story is much more mundane. We were supposed to be hosting a Christmas party for 70 people last night but had to cancel the day before because I did my back in. Typical. Stuck at home feeling grouchy, Eva’s intervention and a little music shopping inspired me to reach for the headphones. This session is the result, mixed live in one take, with ‘Reach For Me’ at the heart of it. I only made one small edit to shorten Rhythm Masters’ take on ‘Been A Long Time’ - their version being a bit too dark compared to the other grooves on offer here. Everything else is disco and funky house with a few remixes of familiar faves thrown in the shopping bag for good measure. Enjoy!Jefferson Jam - Azourious House &

  • Pete's old no 1 tapes

    30/06/2016 Duration: 02h03min

Pete gave me a handful of old tapes from circa 1991 when our gang used to frequent The No 1 Club in Manchester. Sadly I missed out on those No 1 days, arriving in Manc just after, but I still have lots of the tunes. My task was to recreate these hissy, crappy tapes for our friend Lisa's 50th birthday. There were a lot of tunes I could not get hold of, despite Shazamming and Googling lyrics, but this session covers all the tracks I could get together, in the order they were originally mixed by Jake and Tim on those tapes. It’s been a fun project, requiring me to dig a little deeper than my usual retro sets and has given a fresh airing to tracks I don’t often play that much. I had to re-created a couple of mash ups and I also replicated the spooky, Pink Floyd-sampling intro from one of Jake's mixes. Enjoy!Pete’s Old No 1 Tapes for Lisa’s 50th - House Anthems - circa 19911 Intro (drone FX from original tapes / Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1)2 Jungle Brothers I'll House You (A capella)3 Todd Terry, Peggy Harle

  • yashima ufo i - fiji session 1

    26/09/2015 Duration: 01h19min

It seems that even six months off work doesn’t give me enough of a window to fill the gaping abyss left by mixes waiting to be sorted. Enough gap-filling, time for something contemporary. This update is built solely from 2015 tunes, mostly from August / September, and so predominantly tracks I’ve been caning whilst traveling. It’s probably as close as you’ll get to I’d be playing out right now if I hadn’t officially hung up my headphones a few years back. It’s an upfront house session, mainly influenced by Jane and Heath as we were staying with them in Melbourne when I sorted the tracklist. I have fond memories being driven around while banging through their awesome tech and deep house playlists. Seeing as I have a bit of spare time on my hands (it’s raining here in Fiji), I’ve edited the feck out of this session. As a result it moves along pretty quickly. I don’t usually edit this heavily - it can makes mixes feel a bit too much like a Ministry compilation - but on reflection I quite like the results when ver

  • unbespielt C170: finishing off basanov

    28/07/2015 Duration: 02h46min

In June 2015, Lithuanian DJ/producer, Marijus Adomaitis, AKA Ten Walls or Mario Basanov, published a particularly vile Facebook post about gay people. Whilst I believe everyone has the right to free speech, this was a pre-determined concrete view that rubs against the origins of club culture, a culture he milks and profits from for a living. His ill-informed, niave statements led to much discontent being voiced in music and social media. He was rightly pulled from many festival performances but it’s too early to tell how much it has hurt his career. He will probably soon pop under a new producer pseudonym anyway. The trouble is, I loved his work under the ‘Mario Basanov’ monica. I actively sought out and bought the tunes and he’s had more than a fair share of airtime in our gay household. Now, I find it difficult to separate the man from the music, In 2015, three/four years after release, his bottom-heavy, dreamy deep house signature has been mimicked and replicated, dating it quickly. Maybe that’s why he star

  • ferrocolor hd - InDeep - nov 13

    24/11/2013 Duration: 01h18min

Ferrocolor HD - InDeep Nov 2013 (InDa Sessions 1)It's May 2015 and I'm currently in India, seven weeks into a six month sabbatical. After a month of traveling and site seeing we’ve landed in Varkala, Kerala. It's low season at this cliff-top beach town and so the place is quiet, thanks to the forthcoming monsoon. We checked into InDa Hotel for three days and have been here for three weeks. Our first week was so rainy that locals were suggesting the monsoon had come early. What better opportunity to kick back and catch up on some mix playlists that have been sitting untouched for years.Given the rain and grey skies, I homed-in on something reflective to begin: a selection of deep house grooves originally compiled in November 2013. But this isn't miserable, cold, London rain. It’s hot, humid and thundering. In fact, the steamy weather you hear in the mix was recorded from the terrace of our bungalow here at InDa. These tunes may be two years old, but they blend perfectly today.Tracks of note include Wicked Game

  • pryal maxima - InDisco rubs - summer 2013

    28/09/2013 Duration: 01h31min

Pyral Maxima - InDisco Rubs Summer 2013 (InDa Sessions 2)Another InDa session. Ten days later and the sunshine is back. Let’s celebrate by surrendering to the power of DISCO! This mix builds on a playlist of disco-tinged tracks from summer 2013. Funky rhythm guitars, lush strings, SalSoul samples, 70s bass grooves, diva vocal hooks… Sometimes as straight covers or re-edits, at other points looped and twisted, this is where house pays homage to the days of Studio 54 and latter 80s grooves.Tracks under the pin-spots? Well, there are two very similar tracks that sample the same section from a tune by Luther Vandross’ old band, Change. I didn’t notice the similarity until I came to Chapter the podcast file - can you spot them? Change also provide the backbone of No Dilemma, joined by Eryka Badu. Whitney is cut up to great effect on Only Child’s Down Fever - a tune I partied to with the EE gang at Glastonbury last year. Enjoy!Pyral Maxima - InDisco Rubs Summer 2013 (InDa Sessions 2) | mixed & chaptered 28 May1

  • enchanted garden party - Noël’s 40th

    10/08/2013 Duration: 02h10min

(Posted November 2013)Here’s a little early xmas present for you. I turned 40 this year and in the summer we partied like it was my 21st. We hosted a daytime/night time enchanted woodland-themed party. Food and face painting in the daytime for those with kids, fireworks and raving into the night for those without. See the original invite here.Blessed with awesome weather, we were in the garden as well as indoors. The last of the revelers left around 9am. The place looked like a bomb site the following day and, as you can imagine, we weren’t very popular with the neighbours afterwards. Probably one Matt and my best parties, it was the perfect way to celebrate kicking 40. And we raised £2000 for Shelter, so a massive thank you to everyone who donated.Coop DJ’d in the garden after dark, leading up to the fireworks, then Niall picked up the reigns indoors. I played for a couple of hours at midnight before Matt took up through til dawn. I recorded my set, and that’s what you’ll find here. Being about 9 hours into

What? A new mix? You betcha. Here’s a selection of new tunes, mostly snaffled this year. Possibly a little darker than usual but deep n funky as ever. Highlights include Rachel Row’s Follow The Step, which was massive for me over Christmas... Disclosure team up with AlunaGeorge and prove they are still the men-of-the-moment... and FCL’s It’s You finally gets a release on Defected after last summer’s first batch of 12”s have been selling for hundreds of ££s on Discogs - expect a pack of remixes soon, in the meantime I have paired it with the stabbing B-line of LouLou’s Hum Hum. It kinda works, you be the judge. We polish off the session with an old classic from 1992: La Tour’s Blue first appeared in the movie Basic Instinct, don’t you know.Enjoy! The Password is PLAY - update feb 2013 | mixed 16 Feb 20131 Buckley feat. • winter warmer minimix - nov 12

    18/11/2012 Duration: 45min

It’s been a long time / I shouldn’t have left you / without a dope beat to step to...I can’t believe it’s two and a half years since my last post. I have over 20 playlists of tunes ready to be mixed, but the weight of the task led to a sort of paralysis... I get a bunch of tunes ready but never get the time to blend them. Then more tunes come along, or ones I have chosen wear out a little, so the tracklist loses its shine... then three weeks pass and it seems even more like yesterday’s news. So, fast-forward to today and I find myself sorting music for a party. Time to clear this DJ constipation with eight awesome tracks mixed live, perfect for slamming on if you’re getting ready to go out over the festive season. First up, The blissful Benediction. This summer anthem’s been rolling around my head non-stop for the past month. I wake up and go to sleep with ‘keep on riding on and on’ as my soundtrack. Frank B gives us a phat old skool re-take of the classic ‘Chain Of Fools’ - I love the fact he cut out the ch

Bit of an odd one this. I’m uploading it in Dec 2013. It seems it’s been hanging out in my iTunes library awaiting upload, forgotten but hopefully not unwanted. • high pressure days - april 10

    04/04/2010 Duration: 01h13min

Here’s a hour of indie-funk and nu disco for butt-wigglin’ through the Easter break. Dont’ be put off if you were hoping for some house tunes.... you’ll love this :-) It’s one of two sessions I’ve had on the backburner for a while, hence the tunes being cherry-picked from the past year or so. This mix is quite upbeat, there’s another to come that’s deeper and more spaced out.We start with Beth Ditto’s reflective vocal on Cruel Intentions, cut up here by The Edit Master himself, Greg Wilson. LCD Soundsystem take us into orbit with Padded Cell’s funk-chugging take on 45:33. Other highlights include a spacey disco groove by Curses!, a Crazy P track dropped by Unabombers at Big Chill 09, electronic disco from Lifelike, Chris Menace and even the Pet Shop Boys beefed up by Trentemøller. And of course, two iPod favourites of last month: the best track from New Young Pony Club’s slightly disappointing second album, and the Talking-Heads-on-M-Kat ripper, High Pressure Days by The Units, a top track I discovered on a

  • blisstech glisten vol 2

    12/02/2010 Duration: 01h11min

Something I prepared earlier... A little treat for Kat on her birthday. She texted me one evening just before Christmas saying she was listening to Blisstech Glisten and it was pushing her buttons, so I pulled together a playlist of similar vibes in her honour. We start blissfully Bent, slide through some familiar Soulsearcher vocals before being impaled on a glitchy Hobo track with its twisted Jabba The Hut bassline. Sebastien Leger turns a corner and turns up the sparkle as we float through a new take on an Orbital classic and on to the triumphant, hands-in-the-air piano finale by Tony Lionni.Enjoy!Blisstech Glisten Vol 2 | for Kat - mixed 11 Feb 2010, chaptered 12 Feb1 Bent - As You Fall (Guy J Remix)2 Lee Kalt & Mark Alston featuring Missus M - Kiss & Fly (Main Mix)3 Soulsearcher - Can't Get Enough (Hy2rogen & Nikola Remix)4 Hollis P Monroe feat. • perfect motion: roach motel and fire island

    04/10/2009 Duration: 01h18min

I had a week off recently and whilst digging around for tunes online I rediscovered a chunk of early remixes by Terry Farley and Pete Heller of Junior Boys Own fame. In the early 90s I was a big fan of their work under the Fire Island and Roach Motel monicas. This session pulls together some of my favourite FI/RM looped bassline grooves and brass stabs. We open in 1992 with Sunsreem’s classic Perfect Motion, slide through dubs of Juliet Roberts and Monie Love (two records I foggily recall mixing back-to-back continuously one morning after Flesh at the Hacienda), In Your Bones reminds me of dancing downstairs at Paradise Factory with Selina, and as one of the finest house tunes ever produced, Movin’ On has to be one of my Desert Island Discs.Transatlantic was a tune Ted used to play at post-Strangeways chill outs, and we close with a blissful Balearic take on New Order’s Regret - not a great dance floor moment, but a regular on the car stereo driving to work in my Key103 days. All this seems pretty fitting as Ju

  • update - july 09

    02/08/2009 Duration: 01h19min

Here’s the latest ‘update’ instalment. The tunes are mainly from July with a couple of stragglers from May/June, plus the usual rediscoveries thrown in for good measure. Giom’s mix of As Darkness Falls has been in the box a lot this summer. It was on a CD I bought whilst shooting in LA in January but only found a few weeks back, hence it’s cropping up on a few Noël mixes. The Wawa track is an old favourite that’s resurfaced since Defected reissued the Fluential catalogue earlier this year. KneeDeep’s All Night doesn’t disappoint, but it’s trumped by Tony Lionni’s Found A Place - my current top tune, which leads us into the heart of the mix’s commercial dancefloor stompers.A few slices of electro towards the end including a different mix of La Roux’s breakthrough single and the theme from the Orange RockCorps tv ad.Enjoy!update july 09 - mixed and chaptered 2 aug 001 Vernon & Dacosta feat Apple Rochez - As Darkness Falls (Giom)2 Joshua Heath & Inland Knights - I Refuse (Inland Knights Refuge Remix)3

Here’s a sunshine session I mixed a few weeks ago but needed to get through The Big G before I found time to chapter the tracks and upload it for you.The attached file is 75 minutes of deep and classic house for poolside toe-tapping, helping to make those sunbathing hours slip by a little faster. You’ll know the wad of commercial classics in the middle of the mix, but other highlights include Dennis Ferrer’s massive Sinfonia, and Inland Knights do the business once again on Jake Child’s Undergound.Enjoy, and don’t forget to slip slap slop xbeach beats - mixed 14/6/09 - chaptered 5/7/091 Fred Everything feat. • codeine coma kick back

    06/06/2009 Duration: 01h15min

I had my lower wisdom teeth removed on Monday. I had my upper ones out a few years ago and thought this would be a similar experience: bit of discomfort and back to work in a couple of days. I didn’t believe the dentist when he said it would take me over a week to recover. It’s now Saturday and I still have a numb jaw. Why am I telling you all of this? Well the dihydrocodeine pain killers I’ve been prescribed have kept me floating through the week and they have inspired the title of this latest sleepy deep house session. The attached file compiles an hour of vocal and tech grooves, perfect for drifting off in the sunshine. Whether you’re sunbathing in the park or snoozing by the pool, kick back to Osunlade’s old skool Momma’s Groove, Skylark’s deep interpretation of Go That Deep, or the haunting perfection of Ben Watt’s Guinea Pig.Love is in the detail. This monolithic phat slab of groove-bound summer-ness is being uploaded on the UK’s hottest day of 2009 so far. Ok, so 21 degrees isn’t exactly a heatwave but it’s not bad for late April London! Get ready for a whole CD’s worth of sunshine. Burn this one and slap it in the car before the clouds return. As with other ‘Update’ mixes, it’s all about the anthems here. We start with smoother cuts before getting stuck into some electro faves - the best of which is Afrojack’s twisted transformation of Show Me Love, a tune I can’t get enough of at the moment.Enjoy!Project Update - update april 09 - mixed 13/4/09, chaptered 19/04/091 Fred Everything feat Tim Fuller - Stay - Lawn Chair Generals2 Phonique feat.
