  • When Communicating to Your Audience, Show Them How to Help, Right a Wrong, and Fix the Harm

    19/07/2014 Duration: 05min

When I’m trying a case that involves substantial money damages, I don’t tell my jury that it is their job to give my client money for injuries caused by the defendant who did something wrong. After all, who am I to tell someone else what they should do.   What I do try and do is convey a concept I read about long ago in one of David Ball’s books. That is, I make sure my jury understands that they are in a unique position to listen to the evidence and if appropriate, step up and assist someone who needs there help. They are the decision makers who can right the wrong done to someone who is just like them, and when possible, fix the harm caused to another human being. I want my jury to know that under the American justice system, only they can hold the defendant responsible for his misguided or illegal conduct. Listen to my podcast to learn the details. • A Communication Tip 10 Times More Valuable Than Telling a Good Story!

    29/03/2014 Duration: 15min

Over the past year or so on social media, many of the “experts” have been jumping up and down telling you about the importance of storytelling. Every single day I see a blog post or interview claiming that if you learn how to tell a good story, your life and business will change for the better. The truth of the matter is that storytelling and the persuasive power found in a good story is nothing new. Lawyers have been using stories for centuries to argue their client’s cases and convince juries to find in their favor. Trial lawyers have always known that telling a good story to a jury is simply one of many important arrows in their persuasion quiver. In this podcast, I show you something more important than telling a good story. Hope you enjoy sharing this new communication tip!

  • Two Things Great Communicators Do Well

    26/02/2014 Duration: 10min

Mark Twain is credited with once saying, “It takes me three weeks to prepare for an impromptu speech.” If you’ve ever watched a really good trial lawyer give an opening statement or closing argument, you’ll walk away from the experience moved, motivated and ready to take the requested action. Not only will you feel a strong rapport with the lawyer, you’ll also feel passionate about his or her client and the case. When you think about the dynamics of trial, this is truly amazing because of all the barriers that are set up in the first place. Most of the jurors (the audience) don’t want to be there or have anything to do with the case. They hate being away from their families and work and many have doubts about the legal system and distrust lawyers. Click here to read the entire post at MitchJackson.com

  • How Transparent Should You Really Be When Communicating Online?

    09/02/2014 Duration: 13min

“Think twice before you speak, because your words and influence will plant the seed of either success or failure in the mind of another.” -- Napoleon Hill I think people should avoid airing their dirty laundry online. It doesn’t look good, gives people the impression you don’t have your act together, and probably even stinks a bit. Letting everyone in the world see your piles of problems will probably plant seeds in the minds of people that will grow to unfavorable opinions about you. For example, let’s say you need to hire a lawyer. For the past year, you’ve connected and engaged with two lawyers on social. Both seem to be relatively smart and enjoy helping others on the various platforms. From their posts, pictures and videos, they both appear to be family oriented people and active in your local community. They both seem qualified to help with your legal matter. Now let’s also assume that every now and then, one of the lawyers shares a blog post about a personal ch

  • How Good Trial Lawyers Use "Anchor Spots" To Make Their Point and Win Cases!

    19/08/2013 Duration: 20min

Effective trial lawyers know that to “connect” with the jury and win their case, they need to do much more than simply stand behind the lectern and recite the facts and law. To get the results they want, exceptional trial attorneys script out on paper or in their mind different “anchor” spots in the courtroom they will be walking to and using during different moments of the trial... • How To Communicate Like a Half-Blood or Cyclops Without Magic Mist

    19/08/2013 Duration: 08min

Are You Using Magic Mist in Your Life? Think about the last presentation you watched or gave. How many times did you want to spray a magic mist over your face and body so that others would see someone other than the real you? Along the same lines, how many times did you want to spray someone else with magic mist so that you’d be more comfortable watching or listening to them during their presentation? When you’re in the audience listening to a presentation, don’t be too quick to judge. Listen with an open mind and an open heart. There’s always value in most messages, so digest what is being said. Make sure to walk away from the experience with new information or maybe a different perspective on the subject or topic. At the end of the presentation, how many times did you wrap things up feeling just like Percy, Annabeth and Tyson at the end of the movie? After you listened to the message and got to know the other person better, you felt a strong connection. You ended up the respecting an

  • Bruises Will Make You a Better Communicator

    05/08/2013 Duration: 13min

Everybody makes mistakes and nobody is perfect. No matter how good you think you are at communicating your message or making your point, there’s always going to be someone a little bit more polished and better. Someone who from your perspective, may not have had the same challenging journey that you’ve been handed over the years. And that’s alright. We’ve all made mistakes and experienced bruises. Having said that, the very real relationship between bruises and good communication skills hit me during my Saturday morning run at Strands Beach. I was listening to the song “Bruises” from Train’s new album “California 37” (Vine video). Specifically the chorus about “these bruises make for better conversation… we all got bruises.” Listen to the podcast for the rest of Mitch's message...

  • Getting Past The Noise- My Upcoming Spreecast with Gary Vaynerchuk!

    24/06/2013 Duration: 22min

On July 1st I’ll be chatting on Spreecast with best selling author and VaynerMedia CEO, Gary Vaynerchuk. We’ll be talking about his new book entitled, “Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook- How to Tell Your Story in a Noisy, Social World.” Click here to join us and if you’re so inclined, click here to tweet out this exciting event. This topic really excites me because while it’s easier than ever to share your message with the world, the fact of the matter is that all the major platforms are crowded and the sound level can be earsplitting. What I’ve noticed over the past 5 years or so is for this reason, good people with great messages are just not being noticed. Because of this, they become disappointed, discouraged and stop sharing their beautiful songs with the rest of us. The blog post of this podcast can be found at http://MitchJackson.com

  • Before Doing the Communication Dance, Learn All You Can about Your Future Partner's Moves

    29/04/2013 Duration: 14min

Do you Tango or are you more of a breakdance kind of person? Does your future dance partner like to follow or lead? If you’re going to do the communication dance, why not walk out on the dance floor with the confidence and flare of Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire or maybe even Michael Jackson? They sure made dancing look easy. But here’s the deal, behind the scenes before they ever walked out on stage to perform before a live audience, they did their homework, prepared and practiced.   So what in the world does dancing have to do with communication? Well, before I answer that question, let me share a story that will help you choreograph your next presentation.
