The 1984 meeting was significant because it was the first time a farrier had ever presented at the AAEP. The presentation given by Burney Chapman who was a Certified Journeyman Farrier and George Platt who was a veterinarian is often cited as being a critical turning point in how equine professionals treated laminitis and founder. It is often noted that Burney Chapman and George Platt “re-introduced” the use of the heart-bar shoe to treat laminitis and founder at this meeting Dr. Doug Butler weighs in on the profound effect on the 35th anniversary of that significant meeting.
