After Mary had a visitation from the angel Gabriel, she went with haste to visit her aged cousin Elizabeth. The result of this encounter with the mother of John the Baptist was that Mary burst forth in a prophetic song that fills out much of what Gabriel had told her, and would also combine with the prophetic song of Zacharias.
