Stephen Hawking was a famous physicist who died earlier this week – a man who some have compared to Einstein when it comes to intellect and scientific achievement. Hawking was an atheist through and through, and he had very strong beliefs about where we came from and what we are destined for. He believed that “no one created the universe, and no one directs our fate.” And when it came to the question of what happens after death, he compared human beings to deteriorating computers, saying, “There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.” As we look at John 7:25-36, we’ll see that Jesus’ view of human origins and human destiny couldn’t be any more different than Hawking’s.
