Accrington, like a thousand towns across Europe, enjoyed the flaming summer of 1914, but life in the East Lancashire town was not one of contentment. The boom time was coming to an end and the Great War offered young men an escape from the daily drudgery and the chance of an adventure. Sadly, many would never return home.
